For once.. I am almost speechless. I've just finished watching the extended version... and ... it is absolutely flawless.... just breathtaking. All the new/additional footage fits into the storyline so easily. Nothing looks out of place... in fact, it enhances what we already know is one of the best films ever made... and elevates it beyond expectation.

I am humbled.

Oh... and it was nice to see my name in the end credits too:grin:

Ahhh...good question!

Well, in the review that I did on this extended version I briefly mentioned as a treat for the fans, that the last page of the credits is dedicated to all the members of the LotR Fan Club. They listed all 20,000 members as a way of saying thanks!

I like the part with Isildur escaping the orcs. But some parts like the starting and Bilbo yelling of the Shire made me want the old part back with Gandalf and Frodo first. But who can't love the added scenes with Bilbo running from the Sackville-Baggins's?

Spoilers in my post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG I just finished watching it and the credits are rolling now wile I type and hum to the music  It was wonderful! It was magnificent. It was 1000 times better than the first and EVERYTHING Lothlorien and on that was new made me cry. Especially when they reject Frodo... that was sad. Did you see the look on thier faces? I also noticed these are the faces that show in the mirror of Galadriel. Whoa wow cool great....

I loved the Green Dragon scene :loveyou: and when Bilbo talks to Frodo after they hide from Lobelia. Wonderful

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

it was magnificent. :loveyou:

i loved every scene! it was sooo worth the wait!:loveyou:

*spoilers* favorite wuold have to be the discussion between Aragorn and Boromir on the banks of the river Anduin. Boromir yells at Aragorn who bites back rather nastily (:o) but it set up Boromir's last words so well!!!!

Archer of Lorien
November 13th,2002, 09:30 AM
I loved the part where Elrond talks with Aragorn at Aragorn's mother's grave.

Also the gift giving scene at Lothlorien, and when the Fellowship is leaving Rivendell, Aragorn looks back at Arwen. I'm not a big fan of Arwen's character in the movie, but I think she looks very sincere and innocent here.

I said it was great!

*SPOILERS*

I loved most of it! Perhaps its only because I've seen it once, but I think I still prefer the original at the moment, most likely because I accepted as my favorate movie and this one is almost another whole thing.....I'll get over it. ;)

I like 'Concerning Hobbits', There was some wonderful stuff: the gift giving, the Green Dragon ( ), Frodo and Bilbo's talk at the party ( "Have you been in the Gaffer's home brew?" "No! Well, yes......"), Sam and Frodo camping out and seeing the elves. I think the added lines of many (especially Elrond) let their charactors show more.

The only scene I dislike is when Boromir tried to take the Ring at the Council and Gandalf did his thing. It wasn't a bad scene, it just ended up flowing with the rest pretty badly, IMO.

This was me last night, watching my sister's copy:

:o

Yes, Lady Ashley was struck dumb by the magnifistance, the beauty, the delight, the humor, the majesty, the sheer WONDERFULNESS of this dvd.
I was giggling before, during and after. Jumping up and down...

I even said to a friend, "GO PETER JACKSON!"

Yes! That was the effect! It was enought o reelevate PJ in my mind. Now, it will go down during TT, but for now

I loved EVERY new scene. I watched in delight as Bilbo talked, in how Gandalfs "Frodo suspects something" makes sense....our first real insight to Boromir...I listened to the sad, beautful soing of the Elves in the Shire...and I have a new fave line...

"I don't know why, but it makes me sad." Imecry

I nearly cried at that part. In fact, I nearly cried at all the lovely scenes. The Midgewater Marshes...Lothlorien....

mecry

and I laughed as all those hilarious lines kept popping up! It flowed perfectly! So smooth. *laugh* I kept saying to myself, "Is this new?" when I'm sure some things were not. But you keep expecting them, around every corner...and all the Tolkien lines! I was DELIGHTED. Tickled to death!

So I was struck speechless at some points. *grin* my legolas now has a real brain...he knows things...Aragorn knows thing too! Sp must depth now!

Go PJ!! (ntil the next movie)

I will tell more of my speechlessness later. Gotta get to school. lol

~Ashley, the Delighted, the Speechless, the Tickled-to-Death, who must now wait to get her own copy of this masterful work~

I so love this movie! Every new scene flows so well with the rest of the movie! Except one I think. When Aragorn and Elrond are talking at the grave. They are talking about Narsil and how it can be reforged. Then suddenly the scene cuts to Sing! It makes it look like Sting is the sword they were talking about!

Other than that the movie was perfect! I really liked the extended Shire scenes, and Lothlorien. I am glad that Celeborn got more lines. Now he doesn't seem so dumb as before.

The new scenes made the pacing of the film so much better too. Now it seems like their travling for days and days instead of just a day or two like before.

Did anyone notice, when the Fellowship was just getting ready to leave Lorien, Legolas was helping Gimli into the boat! It looked like Gimli was an old woman and Legolas was taking him by the hand and helping him down! lol I burst out laughing when I saw it!

I AM SIMPLY GOB-SMACKED! :o :) :o

It is faaaaaaaabulous! It's like a whole new comedy version...*ahem*

HEY HO! TO THE BOTTLE I GO!

Class....absolute class....

The home brew...that got me in histerics... entdraught

I love the bit when sam gets into the boat and it rocks and he's all afraid and clutches the side....:(...aw! soooooo sweet!

The bit when gimli is snoring in lothlorien and aragorn nudges him... roflmao...oh i'm crying with laughter just thinking of it...

On the leggy side of things...the bit when he speaks the elvish to haldir when their on the flet in lothlorien...ooo......OUT OF CONTROL :drool:ing!....:loveyou:

I also liked the bit when gimli says..."I asked her for a hair from her golden head...and she gave me three..." and legolas smiles....really gorgeous smile... :)

The bit when the random hobbit is chatting up rosie and sam says...watch who you're sweet talking...so cute! And frodo says...don't worry sam, rosie knows an idiot when she sees one!...and sam gets a bit worried about this! lol

I loooooooved the bit with aragorn singing about luthien tinuviel...it gave us so much more of a feel of his love, also i agree that arwen looked really nice when she was looking at aragorn as he left rivendell...i dunno...i think she looked younger and more naive...

I agree that the sting bit came as a bit of a shock...weird linking of scenes...didn't really work...

The other funny bit was when frodo leaves rivendell and there's a path left and a path right and he says...gandalf...mordor...left or right...and gandlaf says....left... lol

Oh...i could go on and on and on and on and on and on...but i won't...*phew*...but i give  :) (two thumbs up) to this edition...very good! :)

Now i have to watch all the making of bits.... :o veryhappy

I liked it when Gandalf did the darkening thing again and recited the words of MORDOR at the council. Also with The hobbits and Legolas..."One bite can fill a man's stomach"
Hobbits: "How many did you eat?"
"Four"

That was one of my favorites - but the funniest was the home brew at the beginning! haha! roflmao

The elves leaving for the Grey Havens made me cry. Did you see the look on Frodo and Sam's face? Sam's was sad, but it looked like Frodo was going to cry... mecry and it made me think about the end of ROTK and... ok don't get me started! ;)

I felt extreme sympathy fro Frodo ant Lothlorien when they reject the Fellowship because of his presence... and did you see the looks he got?? Made me sad mecry AND furious! verymad

WHOA! The Council of Elrond! Gandalf spazzes!!!!!! lol that was strange... I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't my favorite new edition....

By the way, did anyone see MTV's version of The Council of Elrond?? Oh my word, I was completely in a swirl of emotions, laughter, anger and.... more anger especially what they did to Frodo lol

I wanted to cry too! *sniff* I was wigging out...heh heh Gandalf spazzes....that was cool...and at last, we finally here Boromir's name spoken in a good place...no one who had not read the book previously wouldn't have known his name for Aragorn says it in the Misties.

I love the humor!!! and I'll be blasted if I missed the snoring...I wondered why Aragorn slapped someone (I was watching for Sam's poem. LOVED IT!)

I love the part when Gimli says something about even the dwarves forget where the secret entrances are to Moria, and Legolas says, "why am I not surprised *rolls eyes* " hehe

also after Galadriel gives Sam the elven rope, and Sam asks, "Have you run out of those nice shiny daggers?" roflmao

I loved every minute of this movie. There are too many specific moments for me to mention... God, it's all good!

No more theatrical cut for me, no sir! :)

BTW, anyone else notice the music that was added to otherwise unchanged sequences? Like, when there's strings underscoring Gandalf singing Road goes Ever On, or the now music added while Boromir looks at the Shards of Narsil? Brilliant!

Bess the Bard
November 14th,2002, 11:53 PM
The first time I watched, some of the new scenes were just too jarring for me. There was more humor and "real life" moments for the characters in the SED and I almost didn't like them. When Aragorn chides Gimli for cursing at Haldir and then hits him for snoring, it just didn't fit in with the noble and tragic figure that came across in the theatrical cut. But I held my judgement because I knew I had seen the first version way too many times (I have WORN out my DVD of the first movie).

So when I watched the SED a second and third time, I was glad that the new scenes seemed to meld seemlessly into the movie. Now the scenes seem natural and the story flows so much better than the first movie. But I still think the first movie stands on its own merits. It was a spare, broad sketch of the story. Nothing extraneous was there, but the story still got told.

The SED is like a wondrous Baroque cathedral, a feast for the senses. The first movie was like a Quaker church, spare and unadorned. But I can find the beauty in both.

PS--I still don't like Aragorn hitting Gimli when he's snoring. It detracts from Sam's poem.

PPS--Also, I thought that Boromir is rightly taken aback by Gandalf's quoting the Black Speech in response to Boromir's attraction to the Ring. So the world clouds over and evil is felt by everyone, and what does Boromir do? He pops right back up and says "It's a gift". Just like Gandalf had never spoken. Messes up the pacing of the scene. Loved everything else.

Lady Ashley
November 15th,2002, 12:20 AM
Oh, that was a lovely metafor for the SE. The pacing went fast for me, having only watched it once...but now that I have it (!!), I can now pay attension to the snoring and expressions (am remembering the Legolas Expression poll!) and such.

Actually, I liked Gandalf spazzing. It now fits into Boromir's "it's a gift" speech, the reason for it.

gosh! I wanna watch it tonight!! But NO, it HAS to be a school night! grrrrr Course, the other night was a school night too, but I didn't have a paper due the next day...heh heh bad Ashley, visiting WOTR instead of a paper....

But all is well now and I forgive everybody.

I just can't wait to see it now. It sounds like in the Extended Edition, that some of the friendlyness that seem lacking in the Theatrical Version. Has been added back. I always thought that there should be more playful action between the Fellowship. I hope I'm correct, an that I love it as much as you all...;)

I just had to find a forum somewhere so I could express my feelings on the SE..... FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC !!!

I bought it yesterday and I've only seen the 1st DVD so far, but all the extra scenes give the movie so much more depth, a much better concept of time passing, for instance the journey from Hobbiton to the Buckleberry Ferry now seems like days, the much improved character development, loved the Green Dragon, the lay of Luthien & Beren, its all so much more like the book, love it !

I have to wonder whose room he's sleeping in? If it's his, he's a messy housekeeper. But the bedspread and stuff seems pretty childish. Could it be in Peter Jackson's kids' rooms or Sean Astin's since he had his daughter there? Purely idle curiosity on my part.

I really loved how Sean Astin's safety obsession was revealed on the special features disc and then he was the one who got hurt, poor hobbit.

Absolutely wonderful (the only trouble was I didn't get round to putting the 2nd disc on till about 1am on Fridaynight/sat morn, and as I was completly knackered by then had trouble keeping my eyes open, so I had to watch it all again on Saturday morning!!)
But I am so glad I decided to buy it - i did plan on waiting for my brother to bring it out with him next feb - I can't believe I wanted to wait that longlol
Loved all the new scenes - although not too sure about the new bit at the council, with Gandalf having a "spazz" as someone else has said earlier(not heard that word for yearslol )
The bit with Bilbo's ears twitching, and the scene where Sam looks all worried stepping into the boat at Lothlorien, oh, and Merry and Pippin eating 4 lembas, and then fartinglol
I've only watched the first appendix (my mum was not impressed last night - "have you got that bloody dvd on again?") but its amazing all the work they went to, and the amazing detail on everything:thumbs:

They think Pippin farted.

And I have finally watched The Fellowship of the Cast thing and it was FUNNY! I LAUGHED and LAUGHED at the boys making fun of Sean A and the helicopter, and all the funny imitations everyone had of each other. I nearly died when JRD was talking about the boats. *laugh*

But it was great to see they all got along and worked so well together, as a fellowship outside of the film. *sniff* I liked how Sean A. and Viggo got into their roles very well. I love them all they're such neat people---off- and on-screen.

I can't find fault in any of the 4 discs (well 'cept for the slight little error of putting Bree in the wrong spot at the bottom of the old Forest/Barrow Downs (instead of in Bree!) on the interactive map thingy). Best DVD I've ever bought. I want the TTT SEEDVD NOW!!!!!!!

For the first time last night, I found the animated storyboards for the longer version of the Prologue. I was astonished at how book-based it was--even more than the Prologue on the SED. It talked about the creation of the Races of Middle Earth--Elves, Dwarves, Men and Orcs. It named Gilgalad and his spear, portrayed his death in the Last Alliance, named the sword of Elendil. It showed Sauron creating the Ring by piercing his hand with a dagger and the blood trickling out and forming the Ring around his finger. (Not book based but a wonderfully visual way to show Sauron and Ring are one.)

Seeing this made me both happy and sad. Happy to know PJ & Co. do know the books, COULD have had more book-based moments. And sad that they chose not to. I know they had lots of reasons, but seeing what they themselves once considered doing and how great it was, some of their reasoning sounds a little hollow.

Even so, I love the SED. And I am trying to have faith that TTT will not only be a breathtaking visual spectacle (I know it will be), but that the love and respect shown for the book in that discarded prologue will still come through.

However, I haven't got to a few of the last things on Disk 3. Will do soon!

Hey, Mr. PJ, you're doing good! If ya could've put Tom Bombadil and Buckland in there, maybe I could forgive you for those sewers...lol)

if you look at the 'two towers' section beneath this 'fotr' section, look for a thread named 'deleted scenes' and someone has kindly listed ALL of the scenes featured in various trailers that were not included in the theatrical version of ttt. there's a lot. :)

Just the thought of watching 6 or 7 hours of actual movie play with both extended movies makes me want to cry of joy :) :(
Still, I wish PJ put back in the little slaughter of orcs at the borders of Lorien since it was filmed. Damn those early trailers of FOTR for putting those thoughts in my mind. Guess I'll just have to wait till 2004 for most likely a fanatics DVD set with everything in it!

January 12th,2003, 10:25 AM
It's about time I put my opinion here. I was not all that pleased with the EE edition. Some additions were great, but some additions were a waste of time and irked me. I can't even watch the 'Bilbo in his Study' scene. It totally breaks the flow for me. and some of the extra talk while Frodo in the cart with Gandalf could have been left out. They should have left out the guy cleaning his ear, and the abrupt Black speech scene at the council. I hated the scene on the flet when Aragorn was arguing with Haldir, and Boromir's statement to Frodo there.

Most every other addition was excellent. Some were just what I was wanting - the mention of Bilbos Mithril coat and it's value, the gift scenes, Gimli's Lament over leaving Lorien, and Gollum on the log.

If they would have left out the hated scenes I mentioned above, and filled that time with the complete Gildor episode, and Sam's little dialog about a dream of a log with eyes, then I could have died and gone to heaven, because, then it would have been perfect.

One more point. It felt too long and some parts lacked the rousing music that it should have had. I more often watch my theatrical version due to the excellent pacing, then, sometimes, throw in the Ext. version starting with the elves walking thru the shire. or starting in Moria.

Adunauriel
January 13th,2003, 01:58 AM
I will agree with you Miruvor about the Bilbo scene, it did seem too long.... But I pretty much like everything else... I really have no complaints about the Extended edition...:)

Arwen Undomiel
January 13th,2003, 02:22 AM
i totally prefer the theatrical version of the beginning of fotr; bilbo's introduction just isn't as captivating or entertaining as frodo and gandalf's interaction. i adore the gift-giving addition to the film, especially galadriel and aragorn's talk.

the cast commentary is hilarious! it's very amusing that liv suddenly appears to only speak a few lines and then disappears again!

Adunauriel
January 13th,2003, 10:09 PM
Yea, I kind of thought she'd talk a little more too.. I think thou, that they only used her for a little, cause she's only in the movie a little.....:) ;)

Arwen Undomiel
January 14th,2003, 12:25 AM
yeh like for a second. blink and you'll miss her! it annoys me to read that she was supposedly filming in new zealand for 12mths when she was only there a few!

Adunauriel
January 15th,2003, 04:04 AM
Well, she might have been there for twelve months, but not necessasarily filmed the whole time... Plus, they may also be counting the time when the cast has gone back for reshoots... :)

Arwen Undomiel
January 15th,2003, 04:06 AM
nup, she said this in 2001's ELLE magazine 'cos i remember reading it and thinking: 'well what the hell has happened to all your scenes, love?!'. hmmm, it was probably her helm's deep scenes that took such a long time too. shame they got cut. lol lol

Adunauriel
January 15th,2003, 09:01 PM
I didn't know Arwen was at Helm's Deep (I know she wan't there in the book).... I wonder if it will be in the extended?:)

Bonos-Girl
January 15th,2003, 09:46 PM

Arwen Undomiel
January 16th,2003, 12:29 AM
check out the thread 'Arwen WAS at Helm's Deep' in the ttt section for some pics which blatantly show that she WAS at helm's deep but was digitally removed. there's no way she'll make a re-appearance on the extended version. that would cause and unbelievable outrage among fans - me included.

Undomiel
January 16th,2003, 10:07 PM
i dont think they'll re-add that to the extended cut-coz it would completely change the story really. They cut that because they thought Liv Tyler came across as too Xena like so i doubt they'll put it back in. I mean for a start it would chnge the whole "is she/isnt she leaving ME" (for those who havent read the book of course)

Yeah ... especially because the scene in TTT when Aragon has this "dream sequence" (sp?) about Elrond and himself, where Elrond tells him that he should leave Arwen so she can be together with the other ones.

If you just watch the TTT - you wonder when Elrond and Aragon had this conversation, but if you know the extended DVD, you know it.

Arwen Undomiel
January 17th,2003, 01:47 AM
i noticed that too pinklotus. i watched out for their elrond's costume on the dvd and in ttt and he's wearing the same costume in both, so that ttt scene is definitely a continuation of the gilraen's memorial scene in the fotr dvd.

Adunauriel
January 17th,2003, 07:41 PM
Yep, it is.... I figured it out right way, more so for me by what Aragorn was wearing... It actually helped explain better as to why she was crying when Aragorn left Riveldell... It ends up, it wasn't just cause Aragorn was leaving, it's also because Aragorn had tried to give back the Evenstar....;)

Undomiel
January 17th,2003, 07:57 PM
yeah-i thought those were great tie-ins to the first movie-the Elrond scene and the scene of him giving back the evenstar-it gives the movies continuity and it binds them together even more closely.

January 18th,2003, 02:57 PM
yeh, when you first watch the extended fotr, you think arwen's blubbing 'cos aragorn's leaving (who wouldn'1 - boy he's HOT!) but after watching ttt, you realise it's 'cos aragorn has ended their relationship and has told her to leave for the grey havens. nice tie-in.

Adunauriel
January 18th,2003, 08:37 PM
Yep, I think it was very nicely done.. But I do believe that she was crying for both reasons. Beacuse he'd tried to end there relationship, and because he was leaving...:)

I'm a latecomer to this SE stuff, since I don't have a DVD player. But DUH!!!! I never realized that it was also released on VHS...how stupid of me!

So I got it the other day and WOW WOW WOW....the new scenes add so much depth and richness to the movie. Esp. the Lorien scenes -- too bad those didn't make it to the theatrical release. Galadriel comes off as aloof and creepy in that version and she's shown to be so much more in the SE. Plus, as someone else pointed out, Celeborn (whose name is actually mentioned, finally) had much more to do than the one line he says (badly) in the theatrical release -- much better.

So guess what??? For Christmas (a little late), one of my friends bought me a DVD player and the extended DVD -- I'm getting them this weekend and will finally see all the other lovely bits that you guys have been talking about. Can't wait!

One comment -- on the VHS is a "featurette" called A Day in the Life of a Hobbit (is that on the DVD too?) -- why does Elijah have such a trash mouth?? I wanted to say, "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth??" So much for Little Mr. Cute and Innocent!!! roflmao

i love the way lij speaks and what comes out of his mouth is hilarious. i peed myself listening to the four hobbits's cast commentary 'cos they're all so witty and share a fantastic rappor with one another! Arwen Undomiel
January 25th,2003, 03:01 PM
yeh and he sure looked sexy when he was talking about it! lol :loveyou: the bit where sean bean was explaining how he kept knocking orli's boat was v. funny too! it's just fab how they all had such an amazing time together and you can see this reflected in the films and in magazine and telly interviews. ;) it would've been nice for cate blanchett to contribute to the 'fellowhip of the cast' docu. - at least she's in the documentaries on the normal dvd.

i didn't even realise the vhs extended version had any extras on there... but it's a good thing it does 'cos it's not really fair for vhs viewers to be missing out on ALL the additional features that come with the dvd version.

The VHS is on two tapes, so I guess they needed something to fill out the second one. The TT trailer is on there too.

You know -- every time I see one of these "behind the movie" docos, it makes me a little sad that I wasn't involved in making this movie. It would have surely been the thrill of a lifetime. that's the whole point of opting to buy dvds rather than vhses i.e. you get more for your money. now that i've been buying more and more dvds, i'm used to their pristine sound and visual quality, and watching videos just isn't as satisfying any more. plus, i've noticed just how much the quality of my videos have deteriorated over time and it's so nice to know that'll never happen to my beloved dvds, no matter how often i watch them - providing they don't get heavily scratched ;).

it's hard to imagine watching fotr on vhs now...

The point I was making was that if you DON'T have a DVD player (which I didn't, up until yesterday, but of course, I have to now call the cable company to come hook it up!), can't afford one, etc., but DO have a VCR, you can see the extended FOTR on VHS, plus one of the special features that is on the DVD. I was disappointed at the editing at start of Fellowship EE. I thought the fade after Galadriel's prologue and then opening with Frodo sitting under the tree in the peaceful realm of the shire was wonderful. It does not have the same impact opening to Bilbo sitting writing. Also the new score here irritates me with little chirrups and things, and too many little comedy bits. Sounding like I hated here, but honestly I didn't! I just want to re-edit my own copy.
