i would suggest that you email your local movie theatre group...or A movie theatre group if youre out in the sticks lol....they should be able to tell you...i was in contact with mine in NZ over a month ago and they told me the release date for us, but i would suspect that its the same as the rest of the world....it would seem very odd for it to be any later

The release date for The Two Towers in Australia is the same as it was for the FOTR:
26th December (Boxing Day)

Most movies are not released on a universal date (the only movie that was meant to do this was Star Wars Ep II but even that wasn't totally correct. Usually this is because of delays with dubbing in other languages, or the movie isn't that big that it doesn't usually matter if its release in one country inJan and other 11 months later. Ofcourse that changes with something big.
Because other movies are also not released on a universal date (i.e., specifically in this case Harry Potter) it will effect the chosen release date for the TTT release. Since Harry Potter isn't released in Australia until the 28th it gives Potter fever a month to die down. Also Boxing Day is the BIG movie day in Australia. I mean BIG, so it kind of makes sense.
Atleast we're only a week behind North America/Europe!

Bugger, for the 2nd year in a row I'll have to watch the Boxing day test match with a very limited beer supply so I don't have to go to the loo during TTT that evening.

i still have my doubts about that...since the Sydney Premiere is set for the 19th of Dec........i would still check..cant imagine them having the premiere and then making you wait a week.....

Its the 26th. Trust me, I wouldn't have put that information up if I didn't know for sure or hadn't checked it out first (as much as I love to tease people occasionally, I wouldn't have done with this ~ that would be nasty). Anyone that doesn't believe me, or rather, would like to check for themselves (which I always would recommend) is more than welcome to check the
Village Roadshow (http://www.villagecinemas.com.au/) (the films distributors in Australia),
urbancinefile (http://www.urbancinefile.com.au/home/view.asp?a=6614&s=Upcoming_Films) (though I think you have to be a member for that now),
hoyts, (http://hoyts.ninemsn.com.au/comingsoon/default.asp) or even
cadbury (http://www.cadbury.com.au/lotr/index.html) sites, they're all pretty unanimous its the 26th.

Last years gala premier for FOTR happened on the same day (well the 18th anyway from memory, not that I went, wish I had before it became even more huge )

These kind of official premiers in Sydney can happen up to several weeks in advance (i.e., I've even been to a premier for a film that happened 6 weeks prior to official release). It's quite typical for 'a red carpet' premier to be a week or two prior to general release, they rarely (if ever) occur a day or so before general release - (unless i guess there was a scheduling problem with the actors .... e.g., the official Sydney gala premier for A Beautiful Mind had to be put back around a week because of Russell Crowes committments in the States and so it ended up being just a few days before general release).
- its good for media coverage etc
We sometimes do things a little differently down here ;)

Never noticed the release date link down the side of the imdb site (and yep you're right it really is the best especially for cast info) and I've been looking for a long list of international release dates. Hey according to that, the general release for New Zealand is the 25th! Catz is that what you've heard elsewhere or are you lucky enough to somehow go to the premiere?

Should we have a seperate thread to complain about the week late opening, or should we whinge in this one ?

Bastards !!! I'm almost tempted to fly to Auckland on the 19th.

That's not fanatical is it ?

Oh I think we can whinge fine in this one just fine Sharky;)
I'm not sure if flying into New Zealand would help you Sharky. I have a feeling their gala premier is on the 18th but general release isn't until Xmas day. Though thats according Imdb, Catz has info from a local group that might be different. You could go to this charity screening (http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/AK0211/S00089.htm) in Wellington on the 23rd. lol if you can't wait the three days. Or I know sharky, you could enter the FOTR-SEE DVD competition and take me with you if you win roflmao

Hey Sharky! If you find a way to go to the Sydney Premiere on the 19th let me know

I saw the trailer on 7 for the first time last night - the only thing was my dad took it on him at that moment to stand in front of the tele, so I'll I got was a view of his bum!!
But the trailor did say 26th Dec, so looks like we'll have to just accept that fact that we're behind again:(

Hey kids. Apparently Hoyts is having a movie marathon (http://hoyts.ninemsn.com.au/movie/281.asp) on Boxing Day: FOTR and TTT. Quite frankly I'm surprised they'd do it on Boxing Day given how huge a day that is. That would put a screen out of commisssion for 6 and half hours. They could screen 3 'normal' length movies in that time and surely rake in more money than they'd get from a marathon ticket.
I would be tempted if it was the extended edition of FOTR but not if it was the original theatrical release.

-----
Actually I stand corrected. They're porbably going to make more money out of LOTR this way because the other Movie Marathons have three movies so assuming the ticket prices reflect that (I've never been to a movie marathon) then they probably get more money from TTT and FOTR this way.

Any fellow Ozzies got their tickets yet? I booked this morning and will be going on the 27th at 8.15pm with my parents(both have read the books, and both looking forward to the movie, although not as much as me;) ) We can't go on boxing day as we have a party to go to so 27th it is!! Can anybody recommend how much beforehand to get to the flicks in order to get the best seats?

I love how the Hoyts Movie Marathon is on "Boxing Day, Sunday December 26". Obviously they're planning ahead a few years to 2004. lol

Haven't got tickets yet Daisy. Maybe in the next few days though, because I do want to go on the 26th. As for your session. I'm sure that will be one of the sessions that will sell out quickly. I suppose it depends how popular your cinema is. I know that if I was planning on going to that session at Fox Studios I would get there earlier than normal ( I rarely queue for entry). I remember queues for evening cinema entry (not box office) went way out the door for FOTR last year for the first week or so.
I've never seen that happen before at Fox because the actual cinemas/screens are so far inside. It meant a good proportion of the people going in to those popular sessions were willing to queue.
