who is the greatest elf in the book

Grond
November 15th,2002, 06:37 PM
Cirdan or Galadriel... neither of whom are listed. :(

sorry didnt have enough things on the poll

I would have to say "other" for Lady Galadriel. She's the most powerful of all the elves, and second oldest. (The older one being Cirdan.) Besides, she's cool! She was not overcome by the Ring and is so nice.

But why did you put Arwen in the pole?...she had one or two paragraphs in the first book and some in the third. Lady Galadriel got three chapters!

Mirkgirl
November 15th,2002, 07:10 PM
I can add Galadriel if the author of the thread agrees, she's a main elven character (and it's not right to have Legolas and Arwen, but not her IMO) same goes to Cirdan, but he can stay under others with Glorfindel, Celeborn, etc.

Grond
November 15th,2002, 07:15 PM
Arwen hardly qualifies as an Elf anyway. She was technically a Peredhil (half-elven).... but wait, we're debating her status on another thread... so leave her on. :);)

Mirkgirl
November 15th,2002, 07:31 PM
Same goes with Elrond. He's even less elven in genetical sense. Should we get rid of fim as well?

But you're right it's not the time and place.

Tar-Ancalimë
November 15th,2002, 11:46 PM
Arwen is more elf than Elrond....

and I agree, Galadriel definately is a far greater elf than Arwen or Legolas. The only people you'll get voting for Legolas are Orlando Bloom lovers ;)

as for Arwen... like Ash said... three paragraphs?? c'mon!

of those options the greatest is Elrond....

Bawax
November 16th,2002, 03:03 PM
errr, tough one, in terms of LOTR i would vote for legolas purely not too many other elves did much at all IMO.

if were counting all the books and the general history of who did the most good, i'd go for Galadriel. :)

Adunauriel
November 16th,2002, 10:29 PM
Now Tar, you know as well as anybody I love Orlando. I thou in this poll chose to vote for Other. I am in agreement that Galadriel is by far the greatest elf. She's the most magical, and in some ways terrifying of the Elves. She commands attention, and allegience from all who enter her presence. She is the greatest, IMO....:)

Mirkgirl
November 17th,2002, 01:20 AM
okay seems that the majority thinks that Galadriel should be in... I'm adding her. PM me please if you want me to change your vote.

In my humble opinion, I believe Legolas is the greatest elf in the series. :archer:

Grond

from Unfinished Tales, The Istari
Elendil and Gil-Galad were partners; but this was "the Last Alliance" of Elves and Men. In Sauron's final overthrow, Elves were not effectively concerned at the point of action. Legolas probably achieved least of the Nine Walkers. Galadriel, the greatest of the Eldar surviving in Middle-earth, was potent mainly in wisdom and goodness, as a director or counsellor in the struggle, unconquerable in resistance (especially in mind and spirit) but incapable of punitive action. This quote from the author would indicate Legolas was least and Galadriel most.... but what does he know?? ;)

Mirkgirl
November 17th,2002, 07:44 AM
Well, first, the author thinks and writes one, the readers read and understand another (there's a science on that, literature, tho it often gives a third opinion hehe)
Second, this quote doesn't compare Legolas and Galadriel, it just says that Legolas was the last in the fellowship (btw thanks for the quote it'll be handy for the next best fellowship member thread  ); it says that she help just with guidance and such. If you respect more what Legolas did, you still can chose him.

Adunauriel
November 17th,2002, 08:23 AM
I totally Respect what Legolas did for the Fellowship. I think he being an Elf brought a calmness to the Fellowship. Don't get me wrong he was also a fierce fighter. It's just for the sake of the Books, and how she was written Galadriel was IMHO the Greatest in the books... Legolas was great for other reasons, but great none the less. :)

Ithielnor
November 18th,2002, 06:52 PM
what about gil-galad? he was the weilder of a ring before he gave it to elrond at his death. I would have to say either him or galadriel daughter of finarfin.

Mirkgirl
November 19th,2002, 12:01 AM
Gil-Galad deserves recognition I admit, but he's not from LotR.
(and btw Gil-Galad has two rings at first Vilya and Narya, Vilya he gives to Elrond a lot earlier (around the time of the First Council if I'm not mistaken), Narya he gives to Cirdan to keep later, before he goes to meet his fate I think; Cirdan gives it to Gandalf when he comes to Middle-Earth)

Ithielnor
November 19th,2002, 02:31 AM
Sorry:( got mixed up there, 'bout the rings.

I know he was really in the sil but i was refering to the poem
it isn't much but it's there:) I guess that don't count.
I voted for galadriel anyways;)

Finrod Felagund
November 20th,2002, 03:04 PM
If you consider what some characters did pre LOTR, I would have to throw Glorfindel in there, Killed a Balrog and chased off the Witch King.
Of the poll choices, Galadriel, no question. She had seen The Trees, studied under Melian, possesed one of the Elven Rings, Grandaughter of the original High King of the Noldor, daughter of the High King of the Noldor in Aman. In Tolkien's world where power was genetic, she was definitely long in that area.

Adunauriel
November 20th,2002, 09:53 PM
Finrod, I completely agree with you about Galadriel & Glorfindel. They both are truely amazing Characters..... BTW, love the quote in you siggy. It's from Blazing Saddles, right?lol

and elladan and elrohir, too
and .. and .. and
the queen Melian but she is a maia not a real elf

Gotta go with Galadriel :elfqueen:
She had the most influence on the events of the War of the RIng
Sure, Elrond had his little meeting and formed the Fellowship of the RIng (not that he was willing to join in that little walking party, eh??;))
And yeah, Legolas was handy with a bow :archer: but even Tolkien said he was the member of the Fellowship who achieved the least
And Arwen basically looked pretty, inspired Aragorn to great things and made him a nice banner...
Galadriel turned down the offer of the ring - that's a good start...
She was the mightiest of the Noldor left in Middle Earth and even though it's fairly ambiguous whether the ban on her return to Valinor was still in force, she still chose to stay and fight. Sauron Her gifts came in handy - from the bow that Legolas used to slay the Nazgul's steed to the light of Earendil. Even those cloaks came in pretty handy!

Adunauriel
November 29th,2002, 10:34 PM
I think the comment about Legolas achieving the least, is misinturpreted... He wasn't there to really achieve something, he was there to help out the best he could... There wasn't really much for his part in the fellowship to achieve. He wasn't the Ring Bearer, or Aragorn. They had things that needed to achieve. Distroying the Ring, for Frodo, and realizing he was ment to be King, for Aragorn... All Legolas was there for was to support them in the quest...;)

Tar-Minyatur
December 6th,2002, 01:41 AM
I voted for Legolas because who knows how many times he saved Frodo and/or Aragorn's lives (the two most important walkers) while the Fellowship was still together and fighting. However, I do recognized that Galadriel is possibly the greatest elf in the history of MIddle-Earth, but in the three books of Lord of the Rings, she saved Frodo and/or Aragorn's lives (again, the two most important walkers) less times. It's simple math, sort of.
This is all moot, of course, if someone can prove that she saved those two more often.

My vote goes to Galadriel although I like Legolas very much. I think he did a lot by being the eyes and ears of the Fellowship.

I like Legolas a lot. But I like all the elves so it's a difficult choice.

Adunauriel
January 15th,2003, 09:16 PM
Yes, it's a very difficult question to answer... Don't worry thou, it's a personal choice you can make.. Don't worry if people don't agree with you either, it doesn't matter what we think.. It's completely up to you....

if we'rw talking only about LoTR I have to say Galadriel and Glorfindel. But if we talk about all books Ihave to say BELEG CUTHALION WARRIOR OF DORIATH AND THE BEST FRIEND EVER ( after Samwise Gamgee of course)

Finrod Felagund
January 20th,2003, 06:17 PM
All the books: Feanor, JRR even said so.

Mirkgirl
January 20th,2003, 06:58 PM
Well he is the mightiest, and Galadriel is known as close second and wiser (grown wiser through the years)

And it's in LotR section... so it's for LotR... and Feanor wasn't in it... so there is no debate...

My opinion: I like Galadriel more, tho Feanor indeed is the greatest

Adunauriel

Mirkgirl, I completely love your Avatar...
But back to subject, I'm thinking I that Galadriel & Glorfindel, are still my faves...

Galadriel is the greatest IMO but i always liked Frodo's encounter with Gildor in the woods of the shire. Shame about that - still you can't have everything.

January 26th,2003, 12:38 PM
Galadriel, of course! Who else could it be? She's the most powerful and the greatest! :) She's also one of the oldest elves who appear in the books (right?).

Adunauriel
January 27th,2003, 02:31 AM
As far as I undertand it yes, she is one of the oldest....

Mirkgirl
January 27th,2003, 03:34 AM
yep she's born in Valinor in the days of the Trees... a lot older that Elrond for example, younger than Cirdan tho, who is one of the first elves, even if not one of the ones awaken in Cuivienen

Adunauriel
January 29th,2003, 09:23 PM
Thanks Mirky, I thought she was older then Elrond, but not sure...;)

Ummm, who is Cirdan?

Mirkgirl
February 2nd,2003, 04:18 AM
A lord of the Teleri in Middle-earth, Círdan was persuaded to remain in Beleriand with some of his people by Ossë when the other Teleri were taken into the West by Ulmo. Lord of the Falas during much of the First Age, he removed to the Isle of Balar after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. At the end of the First Age, with the destruction of Beleriand, he moved eastwards and founded Mithlond, the Grey Havens, on the Gulf of Lhûn.

He remained in Lindon throughout the Second and Third Ages. Throughout the Second Age, that land was under the direct rule of High King Gil-galad. At the time of the fall of Eregion, Celebrimbor sent two of the Three Rings north to the High King, and Gil-galad in turn passed one of these to Círdan; Narya, the Ring of Fire. At the end of the Second Age, Gil-galad fell in the War of the Last Alliance, leaving Lindon without a ruler. His natural heir would have been Elrond, who had long since removed to Imladris, and so Círdan took on the leadership of the Elves west of the Blue Mountains.

Círdan continued to maintain the havens at Mithlond throughout the Third Age and into the Fourth. When the Wizards arrived in Middle-earth, he perceived that Gandalf was the wisest of them, and gave him the Red Ring to bear in secret. He took an active part in the events of the Third Age, too; it was his mariners, for example, who sought to rescue Arvedui the last King of Arthedain. He was still the master of the Grey Havens at the end of the Age, when he saw the Ring-bearers' White Ship, that he had held in preparation over the long years, pass into the West.

I went for Galadriel, but Elrond, Cirdan, and Glorfindel were great. I have to say that i couldnt reall have chosen Círdan or Glorfindel in the LOTR-their real importance is shown in the Silm. I chose Galadriel because she was wise, powerful, gentle, caring and she overcame the temptation of the ring, which was no small feat.
