Middle Earth was filled with Tragidies from beginning to end. What, in your opinion, is the saddest part in LOTR. I will also be posting this in the Silmarillion section so go there too if you've read it (which you should).
The saddest PArt in my opinion is the Ents-Entwives relationship. Its so sad that a race so old and proud just slowly sies because their mates disapeared. And the fact that they must suffer throughout their entire long lives makes it worse.

When Frodo goes to the Undying lands!!!! I literally cried reading that part in the book! I must have read just those couple of pages 20 times! Crying everytime! Poor Frodo! (but then again maybe not poor Frodo)

Yessir oh great prince sir...notworthy notworthy notworthy ...i shall go and read the Sil at once oh great one..... ;)
hang on......i already have!!!! lol lol
and i finally found a copy for sale to relace the one i lost.....so im a happy kitty:grin:
i think the saddest pat of LOTR is the whole theme of the Elves moving on......it permeates the whole book, colours everthing.....how sad to leave all they knew behind them, but to always remember....that sense of loss, and bereavement is just integral to the whole story...and gives it much of its poignancy

I have to agree with catz. And :hooray: we'll have :catz:=:read: at last rofl
But if we're talking about a particular part...
I never found anything that sad about Frodo leaving - the 'new look' of the Shire was way sadder IMO. Denethor going mad was very sad too and I guess when Sam thought Frodo was death.

Oh yeah! When Frodo was almost dead after Shelob attacked... I knew Frodo wasnt dead because...well I just did from sources, and I was crying..but not as much as the end becuase I put in alot of thought to what happened afterwards and that was what made me sad... Did you read the story in Fan Fiction? It is a member's version of what happened where Tolkien Left off! It is fantastic.. and that made me feel sad too

The end! I agree with Imrahil, I always feel sad when I read the part where Sam says "I'm Back" It sort of makes you look back at everything he went through throughout the whole story.

I think the death of Sauron was the saddest part.

And for Silmarillion, hmm the whole book! (especially Nirnaeth Arnoediad and the death of two trees)

I think the end of the Third age in general is sad. The Fourth ag eis the age of man. Our age.......I guess.......kinda pulls you out of the fantasy and back into the present day. I guess you have to wake up from all dreams though. :-)

Our resident Dol Amroth leader started this thread off speaking about the Ent-Entwive relationship. I'm currently digging deep into the Two Towers and I came across a conversation that Quickbeam was having with Pippin and Merry.
He was going on about how his former home was very beautiful and the birds sang in the rowan trees, etc.. He states that he likes birds (even when they chatter) but its the next line that is sad and very strange as well:
"But the birds became unfriendly and greedy and tore at the trees, and threw the fruit down and did not eat it."
I'm still trying to figure out the significane of this, I believe that JRRT was trying to portray something deeper here. Anyone agree?

Well is this not a portent of what they will find out about Saruman, taking trees and just chopping them down and leaving them to rot etc. A biblical greed tale it reminds me of. It's an old adage really don't take more than you need etc............... I guess.
Though you coul dread into it the whole men start things well but always their standards/morals fail them. As per Legolas Gimli convo?

OK, OK...the one who cries is here... ;)
I DIDN'T know that Frodo was actually NOT dead (i read lotr before most of my mates). I CRIED SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! My mam tried to take lotr away from me cos it was upsetting me too much (what IS her problem?) verymad
As you can imagine i fought back was allowed to read ROTK!!!!! lol
The other bit that made me cry was when Faramir was talking bout when he saw boromir in the boat...and he was reaching out to him...but he couldn't quite make it...
*pil goes elsewhere to cry alone* :(
