I couldn't find one of these, I know the top ten is kinda morphing into this sort of thing, but I thought it'd be good to do a seperate one. Moderaters feel free to move/merge/whatever if there is.

Anyway, on with the post - what movies have y'all seen recently that you would recommend is worth giving out a few bucks to go watch.

I saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding last night - it was extremly funny, nothing to complex to grasp, and the jokes you get even if you don't understand anything to do with Greek culture:thumbs: lol

Well, there seems to be lots of kids movies coming out at the mo' - it is xmas I suppose!! So I'll be taking my friends kids to watch Harry Potter(thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!;) )
Other than that, I haven't seen much advertised. (I haven't really had the time to watch tele, let alone get to the flicks!)
But I'll be going to Die Another Day, when it opens. And The Guru is coming out, which looks good. (I was watching my Bridget Jones video last night, which I got in the Uk last xmas, and its weird as they were advertising The Guru then, and yet its only just coming out here - we are extremely far behind in somethingslol )

hope u enjoy it all Daisy, just seeing Die Another Day tomorrow...so that'll be much fun for sure

the Guru.....havent seen it but the review in Australian Empire was pretty scathing...
The premise is loaded with comic opportunities, almost all of which go begging
so i guess it depends on whether or not you agree with Empires reviewers lol
Donnie Darko looks like fun tho......hey any movie with a demonic giant rabbit just HAS to be good. yeah?;) lol

All I've seen lately worth recommending is 'Frida' .
I liked it a lot.
I saw 'Far from Heaven' but wasn't too thrilled with it. It was like a disfunctional Donna Reed show.
I'm really looking forward to seeing 'Chicago' when it comes out.

I am going this weekend to see 'Attack of the Clones' in IMAX. That should be a thrill.

One of my favorite old indie films was on cable last night.
'Living in Oblivion' If any of you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Because it's story is set in the behind the scenes process of movie making, it reminds me a lot of all the extra featurettes in the FOTR DVDs.

Well, having never heard of Donny Darko, I just looked it up on IMDB, and the summary they give is different to say the least. A 6 ft rabbit? Sounds like a B movie to me. Or is it more worthwhile than that?

Ronin
December 1st,2002, 02:18 PM
no, doesn't look good...is fantastic!! i believe i might have put it up on my top 100, but if not, believe me...deserves to be there.

its very, very worthwhile...

There's nothing wrong with B movies - they can be pretty enjoyable although, I wouldn't go to the flicks to see one - rather wait for that late night, cheesy showing as you said

I went to see "Real Women Have Curves" today. I really liked it a lot and recommend it to all ladies who don't look like models. Or also to all ladies who remember the natural conflict level between mothers and daughters. I also like the Los Angeles atmosphere and scenery, since I grew up in S. CA.

I love B movies, just to see them with the understanding that they are indeed B movies...just good fun!

sounds good Mir......i always like things that challenge the accepted mores..........ill keep an eye out lol.......over the next 6 months or so lol
B movies are fun..........wed not have "RHPS" or "Mars Attacks" without em...and that would make the world truly a poorer place!!! lol

Whats RHPS?? (i'm blonde - I don't pay too much attention, and if I do I have the memory of a fish). Mars Attacks is great though.

I watched Heavenly Creatures at the weekend - thought it was good, alot different to what I imagined - not quite as horrific as I expected. I was looking out for The Frightener's but couldn't find it.

Hi all. Saw two more movies.

'Gangs of New York' was really good, but I liked it only equally with TTT, not better. TTT was more thrilling and spectacular. Gangs was maybe a bit better in the story flow and writing - and also gave us tidbits of real history mixed in, which I liked.

Also saw 'Two Weeks Notice." Pretty dumb, silly, gross, and otherwise badly written. I don't recommend it. The chemistry between Bullock and Grant was missing, IMO.

(I wish my job could have been Movie Critic. Well, too late now.)

P.S. I am catching up on my movie viewing this week. Will be seeing 'Catch Me if You Can' and the 'Wild Thornberrys' Anyone else plan to see these? Can't wait for 'Chicago.'

So much to look forward to.. especially in the first half of the year... and we're actually getting "8 Mile" after TTT finishes!! Amazing!

I was about to blast you for being stereotypically mean to us blondes - but then I realised the stereotype is pretty true to the realitylol Although I do have a brain under this hair - honest!! (If I keep telling myself that maybe one day it may come true;) )

Am looking forward to Chicago, and Catch me If you Can - I think that one looks better than Gangs of New York - which doesn't really appeal to me, may just wait till it hits DVD.

I'm resurrecting this thread as I have finally seen Donnie Darko - absolutely fantastic  I can see why Ronin has it on his top 100. Jake Gyllenhal (sp?) I thought was a good actor- haven't seen him in a movie before now- he looks remarkable like Tobey maguire. I did have really weird dreams last night - don't know whether it was a product of this film, or watching Buffy all weekend (Foxtel had a slayerfest on)

wasnt it fabulous? i actually have to revise mine and put it in too......wonderful movie......glad you liked it too Daisy....def top 100 material.
Another movie ive seen lately is Samsara......not everyones cup of tea by any means......but a beautiful movie shot in the Himilayas, in nepalese.......it doesnt "give" you messages on a plate.......and on one level its very simple.....one mans search for enlightenment........but on another, its incredibly complex......a tale of morality and rightness and responsiblity and the nature of love and desire......as the tagline reads "is it more important to satisfy 1000 desires, or to conquer just 1? " (or words to that effect).........another wonderful movie........Gods there are just so many great ones around this year :whoohoo: :wiggle: :whoohoo: .......wonderful to be a movie buff

January 28th,2003, 02:54 PM
Daisy, catz...*smiles smugly*...glad y'all loved Donnie ;) lol
it is a fantastic picture tho, ranks right up there with Equilibrium as perhaps one of the greatest movies of the year that will be seen by literally no one. so glad y'all liked it...and hope u like it as well Ilm
Rabbits!!!

Samsara...don't tempt me again ;) another i can't wait to get my hands on is Whale Rider...won an international Sundance award

Not heard of Samsara - is it an english speaking film?
Saw a trailer for Whale rider last night - the trailor actually made it seem a bit Free Willy-ish  although it was only a short one. Whats it about?

I went to see Chigaco last night - that was wonderful, although as with anything, may not be everyones cup of tea. A lot better than Moulin Rouge. I kept wanting to clap after every number - but then again I'm a huge fan of musicals and theatre. And the stars were great - I don't normally like CZJ, but I thought she was amazing and looked gorgeous, and Richard Gere was abit of a surprise. John C Reily was great too.... well, I didn't actually think there was a bad performance.....thoroughly enjoyed it

Whalerider freewillyish??? how did you get that idea? lol
its about a young girl who challenges the traditions of her tribe and the expectations of her elders to prove herself worthy.........the Whalerider part comes about because that tribe reckons its descent from an ancestor who was believed to have been brought to Aotearoa on a whale
oh and no, Samsara isnt in English......its subtitled tho, not dubbed thank the gods lol

a not--thought-provoking movie i saw and enjoyed recently was try seventeen. it wasn't what i expected, but if anyone doesn't want to have a heavy brain workout, this is ok to watch. :) i don't think whalerider will be shown here, though, except maybe as an art film (which means it will be shown in one or two theaters in the country).

I liked Donnie Darko too... caught it on cable t.v. one night.
Jake was also in Bubble Boy and The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston.

ahhh yes.........young Jake is one to watch i think ;)
well ive just seen Whalerider........and ok........as a NZer i may be somewhat biased, but it was wonderful........if you get a chance to see it please do.
its so beautiful and it has that rare thing today.......it has heart. i defy anyone not to tear up during this movie.....heheh i bawled in parts.......but its not dark at all...........it has dark moments, but the overall message is one of hope, even thru the dark times.......and its funny too........and it was so good to see one of the wonderful Maori tales on screen

Don't know how I came to that conclusion - it was probably just the way the trailor was edited - it was only a teaser. I'll keep a look out for it though.
