I go with Narsil/Anduril, tho it was hard to choose between that and Aeglos. Both were REALLY powerful.

I tend to measure weapons by who they defeat so:
I know they aren't in the poll but Dramborleg took out a few Balrogs and Ringil cut up Morgoth pretty bad
But of the choices I chose Glamdring

i chose narsil because of its history.

I chose Narsil, yet an even greater weapon still would be the One Ring, even if it isn't a sword.

well..it's debatable what its power was and therefore whether it could actually be counted as a weapon.

I'd say Aeglos out of the ones listed, but if I were to choose one from all of Middle-Earth I would choose Gurthang.

very lethal but IMHO too many bad things happened around that sword

Yeah, but still, what a sword!

Hee Hee :jester: I think if I could have the pick of the litter... I would choose to be a Mumak mahout of course, rather than fumbling about the muddy battlefield (not that THAT doesn't have its own downside).
But, no, I would choose Aeglos. It's just such an intriguing weapon! :elfeek:

I agree, any sword that would cut iron like wood and talk is extraordinary and it would be nice in a fight or two but I wouldn't want the trouble that followed it.
All of its owners died badly: one was thrown off a cliff, one killed by his friend whom he was rescueing, one was killed in his own house for a piece of jewelry, and whole chapters of bad things happened to, around, and because of Turin. When a Maia says beware, she knows what she is talking about. That Sword was cursed, I would rather have Sting than that sword.

Sting kicks ***!
Sting wounded Shelob the Glutting Spider
Fingolfin
January 20th,2003, 09:25 PM
Gurthang...the sword of Turin Turambar...It's the best!

Aeglos and Angrist (Iron-cleaver) <=b/c it cut through Morgoth's crown and Beren retreved the Silmaril with it!
Gil Galad
April 11th,2003, 04:13 PM
what was the knife that beren cut the silmaril from the crown of morgoth with called?(oh voro im just after seeing the answer in your post, thanks) thatd be cool , not many blades can say they'v doen that. but from the list itd be Aeglos, its dam cool then id say Glamdring after that
Alatar
April 12th,2003, 12:13 PM
i think Angrist also, such an amazeing sword to do what it did:thumbs:

I think Ringil, the sword of Fingolfin is quite cool and so is Glamdring. Movie-Sting is quite cool but it isn't really a dagger. But I think Narsil is the best. There so much history behind the sword and it played such a mayor part in the war of the ring. It get's my vote!
Voroturiön
April 13th,2003, 04:32 AM
Ringil is awesome! I imagine it would look kinda like Glamdring, all blue and silver, but even better!
Gil Galad
April 13th,2003, 08:15 PM
yeh Ringil would be cool, imagine the sword of Fingolfin

April 13th,2003, 09:27 PM
Yeah... and then imagine Feanor's sword. Since he was the best elven balcksmith he probably possesed the best elven blade. I would love to know moer about his sword.

April 14th,2003, 12:34 AM
Ah, but Feanor was a jewel-smith, not a blade-smith.
Gil Galad
April 14th,2003, 09:50 AM
but your fogetin who , feanors father in-law was, and if im not mistaken he was the best metal worker and he instructed feanor in such matters. oh where is that quote from Voro
Voroturiön
April 14th,2003, 10:27 AM
Ah, you speak of Mahtan. Perhaps, you are right but, remember that the Noldor first begain the forging of weapons upon Melkor's urgings.
Is this the quote you are looking for?
"And Feanor made a secret forge, of which not even Melkor was aware; and there he tempered fell swords for himself and his sons, and made tall helms with plumes of red. Bitterly did Mahtan rue the day when he taught to the husband of Nerdanel all the lore of metalwork that he had learned of Aule"-Silm p.69

yes it was at melkors sugestion that they made there weapons, but was he not the greatest of the Ainur, and did Mahtan the greatest metelworker not teach the greatest of the noldor all the lore of metalwork, so i recon that the swords of Feanor and his sons wud b excceptional.
No voro, i mena the quote u have as your signiture

Yes, That's what I thought too. Feanor's sword was also exceptional becouse it's the first to be drawn to threaten someone with death (Feanor threatened to kill Fingolfin). I think Feanor's sword might be the best sword ever. Píty it almost never mentioned though. Me Cry

I like your logic Gil, I imagine Feanor's swords were probably the best ever created. Just think, the Elf who captured the light of the Two Trees in jewels would probably be able to make swords of equally unmatchable quality. Although Eol's and Telchar's forgings were very formidable but I can't imagine they could rival Feanor's smithcraft.

April 16th,2003, 10:47 AM
he made swords for his sons aswell(and the knife Angrist that which cut the silmaril for morgoths crown was probably forged by feanor in the undying lands aswell). his sword was probably broken when he was slain by the balrogs, meadhros sword was prob taken when he was captured at the treaty talks, that still leaves 6 sons whose swords wud have been of the same stock, its a pity they werent mentioned
Voroturiön
April 16th,2003, 11:50 AM
Actually, Angrist was forged by Telchar of Nogrod.
Gil Galad
April 16th,2003, 12:12 PM
oh yes of course, i just assumed that since one of the sons of feanor had it that it was from there stock of weapons from valinor

the blade which Beleg recieves from Thingol when he sets out to find Túrin (the blade which kills him later in the story) is also quite good and so is the black sword of Túrin. Well... there are just soooo many good swords in te first age.
Gil Galad
April 22nd,2003, 04:16 PM
yeh therre r just so many excelent weapons to choose from, i really dont think sting shud be there, it was forged as a knife, which technically makes it a tool, not a weapon

it is a prety cool blade tho, well xcept for the whole talkin thing that cud get annoying(and its been said it talks evil wortds to him)

Yes, when I read the part in the Sil where Túrin wants to kill himself and the sword talked back I was like: Huh!?
That was really weird. I'll guess I'll go for Narsil (of the 4 choices) but I think the best is Fëanor's blade. But let's not forget Morgoth great, strong and terrible weapon: Grond, the giant mace
Lasgalen
April 27th,2003, 07:21 AM
I already said my choice, but if I have to pick from the list, then I pick Narsil because it was forged by the most reknown smith of Nogrod (who, coincedently, also made one of the weapons I mentioned as greatest)

actually, it just came to my mind that the xplosive powder that saruman makes wud classif as a weapon, and a prety good one too

Personally I would rather have a sword than gun powder. Swords are more honorable. One on one combat and all that stuff.
Gil Galad
June 5th,2003, 04:35 PM
well of course i aggree, i love the honour and valour of hand to hand combat, but it doesnt make it the easiest way to win a fight, thats why gunpowder is such an effective weapon
