I love Tolkien's writing and have some favorite parts of the narration! I would love to hear what yours are too! Here are a few of mine:

From TTT:

"They seemed to have left winter clinging to the hills behind. Here the air was softer and warmer, and faintly scented, as if spring was already stirring and the sap was flowing again in herb and leaf. Legolas took a deep breath, like one that drinks a great draught after long thirst in barren places." pp. 31

"As he fell slowly into sleep, Pippin had a strange feeling: he and Gandalf were still as stone, seated upon the statue of a running horse, while the world rolled away beneath his feet with a great noise of wind." pp262

"The hurrying darkness, now gathering great speed rushed up from the East and swallowed the sky." pp. 270

There are so many more passages that I love! Tokien writes in such a way that it is so easy to visualize what is happening that I feel as if I am right in the story...trudging along with everyone else!

I'm glad you brought this up because I was thinking the same exact thing about Tolkien's writing as I began reading ROTK earlier today.

Anyways, From ROTK, Book V, Ch. 1 (Minas Tirith), ". . . Mount Mindolluin, the deep purple shows of its high glens, and its tall face whitening in the rising day. and upon its out-thrust knee was the Guarded City, with its seven walls of stone so strong and old that it seemed to have been not builded but carven by giants out of the bones of the earth."
and in the very next paragraph, "the Tower of Ecthelion, standing high within the topmost wall, shone out against the sky, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, tall and fair and shapely, and its pinnacle glittered as if it were wrought of crystals"
Breathtaking views in my head, because of Prof. Tolkien's beautiful and breathtaking words.

I love his description of the Argonath, myself. I always kinda skimmed past it, not realising how powerful a description it is. Then, after seeing the awesome image in the movie, I went back, re-read that passage, and was completely blown away by Tolkien's writing.
