Personally I think the impression people have for Gimli is totally different from Legolas. They are the opposite, and I don't think Gimli represents "Light and agile." He's more to the earth the flying. If there's anything special for him in the movie, it's won't be like "skating on a shield", it could be something else that suits him better.

I would loooove to see straight after leggy does his shield-surfing thing.....gimli to come crashing down the stairs lopping orc necks with his axe...it would really show off the opposites attract (friendship here friendship!) concept for the two of them. Shield surfing! How cool can you get?! I saw a screan cap recently of Legolas seconds before he does this, and it looks like he has the sheild in his right hand and throws it down himself and then jumps on it. I never noticed that in the seven times I saw it in the theatre, but maybe he did just jump on a sheild that just happened to be lying on the ground. Does anyone for sure?
