If the Fellowship would have been able to trick him into walking into that shaft of sunlight, would he have turned to stone?

Hmmm... good question. I would theorize that there's not enough of it, or it's not direct enough, or something... who knows? Maybe it's the *sun* that turns them to stone, not the *sunlight* (ie, if they can't see the sun, they don't turn to stone!) I don't think he would have turned to stone, though.

Or, maybe it has to be the frist morning rays of sunlight...... But, you never know....;)

oh, does that rule apply to all trolls? because the trolls bilbo ran into and the cave troll are two different species. so does it happen to every kind?
hmmm..... very cool question. ;)

After re-watching that scene again, I noticed that right after Legolas shoots the double-arrows into the Cave Troll, he stumbles backward and grabs on to Balin's coffin for balance. He is bathed in sunlight for a good couple of seconds, but it didn't seem to bother him. So either Cave Trolls don't turn to stone, or it has to be a greater amount of sunlight, or PJ forgot. I don't know which.

*TTT SPOILER*
In the two towers weren't there two cave trolls pulling the gates of Mordor open? they were in direct sunlight...

Hmm, yeah. They must be a different race of trolls. They do look a little different from "Mr Bilbo's trolls".

Yeah, it's probably the same type of difference of races like (but not exactly, of course) the uruk-hai and the basic mordor orc.

Wow.. this is a really interesting question. :) I never thought about that.
I agree though that it probably wasn't enough sunlight. It is odd about those trolls in Mordor though.. so I guess they must be a different species then.

maybe it because mordor is covered in clouds and smoke from mount doom
