I'm more than convinced that "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling was inspired with the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien when she was writing her novels, and as much as I like H.P., I can't help but think that Rowling stole some of Tolkien's ideas. :p
Not that I have any feelings of resentment toward these coincedences, I think it would be fun if we could name all the similarities we can notice between LOTR (and "The Hobbit") and H.P.
1. In "The Hobbit", a poem written by Bilbo mentions a species of creatures known as "Dumbledor's". In H.P., there's Professor Dumbledore.

Of course Rowling was inspired by Tolkien, I think she's openly admitted to that before.
Haven't read the HP books, though, so I'm not gonna try to come up with subtle similarities... though there's the really glaring one of Dumbledore being pretty similar in character to Gandalf (at least as far as I can tell from the movies!)

There is a character called Wormtail in HP, whose personality is similar to that of Wormtongue's.
The Dementors remind me of the Black Riders.
I think that 'Dumbledore' also means 'bumblebee'.

In LOTR, there's a fight involving a Cave Troll. In H.P., there's a fight involving a Mountain Troll. :Orc:

voldemort=sauron
dumbledore=gandalf
dementors=nazgul
and by the way, i was watching this documentory abt the making of LOTR, and Tolkien said he got his ideas from WW1 and WW2.

I didn't think of this when I read the books, but in the cinema Dobby and Gollum seemed really similar! Maybe it's just me, though.
And Tolkien was in WW1 and I think that's why LOTR can be so depressing sometimes, like the good guys always dying. Especially in the Silmarillion.

I suppose they did a little, though obviously Gollum was much better made, I really didn't like Dobby completely destroyed how I imagined him. ;)

Harry bears the scar
Frodo bears the ring
neither have close family mentioned in the book (I mean they don't live with their mummy and daddy and 49 siblings)
bad guy disembodied
servant of the evil guy poses the most physical threat
pattern of beginning a task with a complete set of friends and the party gradually splitting up

In HP, Voldemort is known as "He-who-must-not-be-named".
In LOTR, Faramir refers to Sauron as the "Unnamed".
