What was your favorite line in FOTR?

Personally, my fav was Boromir's death speech. It was very touching.

Second are all of Merry and Pippen's, just cause they are funny.

Third would have to be Gandalf's little talk in Moria with Frodo about making the best of the time we are given.

I think Gandalf had some of the best. Besides the fate speech to Frodo, which I agree was very well done, I also like the one liners like:

"Fool of a Took!! Throw yourself in ...." and I don't quite remember the rest at the moment.:embarras: But I thought that was hilarious!!

Oh, and Sam's " Oh, I wouldn't be dropping any eves sir!!" as well!!

"One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them."

The way Ian McKellen spoke it as Gandalf gave me chills the first time I heard him.

My favorite line/s are The last sentence in the whole movie... but thats not my first choice (Sam... I'm glad your with me)
I only choose that becuase Frodo says it... but I have to say my favorite line are:

1.) Aragorn: "Are you frightened?"
"yes"
"Not nearly enough, i know what hunts you"
(I just like that one for some reason)

2.)"YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" <--that one gives me chills

3.) "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future"

#3 is my favorite as you can see....

I like the whol 'one ring....' bit but it isn't my favourite, my favourit is when gandalf asks sam if he heard anything (right near the beginning) and sam says somethng like 'oh nothing very important just a great deal about a ring, something about a dark lord and a bit about the end of the world' (can't remember it very well.)

my other favourite line is pippins 'you'll need someone with brains on this mission.....quest....thing!'

I love the verbal exchange between Frodo and Boromir at Amon Hen, and a few minutes later between Frodo and Aragorn. Both scenes are well very well acted. "Would you destroy it?" There's something about how that line is delivered...

Pil
July 11th,2002, 08:44 AM
Yup, the bit with Frodo and Arargorn is a very powerful bit. We are able to see the sort of test that the ring puts people through and how Aragorn passes with flying colours! lol

Another line i like is

"You've been officially labelled a disturber of the peace!" You know, Frodo talking to gandalf in the cart? It really shows the innocence of hobbits. They don't really understand much about the outside world and gandalf, so they just give him a bit of a cold shoulde and go back to their lives. That's why hobbits are so strong and not corrupted - their nature (although some obviously are different) is to stay put and not do anything outrageous. :p

Does anyone like it when sam says "Get off him!" when pippin or merry (i can't remember which) is lying on top of frodo when they bump into eachother in the field in FOTR? Its so sweet, he drags...i think its pippin...off frodo and brings him to his feet. Good ol' loyal sam! :p

Man, its like Frodo has his own little slave! *pushes over sam and takes over frodo's backrub* Yeah I like any part with Sam helping out Frodo.... ok ok! I like all parts with Frodo, but that doesnt mean i dont pay close attention to everyone else!

Aragorn Isildur
July 23rd,2002, 10:38 AM
My all time fave is Boromirs death speech,

"I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king" or something like that.

"This is no mere Ranger, he is Aragorn, son of Arathorn..." - Legolas

"This is Isildurs heir?" - Boromir

The list goes on and on....Aragorn and Frodo scene etc etc

Aragorn:king:

These were my faves:
'So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we can decide, is what to do with the time that is given to us' - Gandalf

'What about breakfast?' 'You've already had it,' 'We've had ONE, yes. What about second breakfast?' 'I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip,' 'What about elevenses? Lucheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about those, doesn't he?' 'I wouldn't count on it,' - Pippin, Aragorn and Merry

And Boromir's really sardonic, sarcastic, comtemptuous line in Moria,'They have a cave troll,'

A! Elbereth
July 27th,2002, 09:23 PM
The one spoken by Gandalf is wonderful! I think I might put it in mah signature.... Isnt it so dramatic when Frodo is standing staring into nothing with the ring in his hand, and then he has those falshbacks of Gandalf and he says that line again - pure genius. I dont know how it makes me feel, but its a very powerful line at a very powerful moment :loveyou:

The first time (or rather the second, but never mind) I hated that line! It has since grown on me quite a bit, very funny actually. It was said in such a well-doesn't-that-just-figure sort of way that sounds so out of place I just have to laugh.....

At first I really detested it though, it was right up there with "Let us hunt some orc".....hmmmm, maybe I should start a Worst Line thead....Nah, too pessimistic. lol

I loved Elrond's line to Sam after the Coucil has decided on the fellowship "You shall at least go with him. It is hardly possible to separate you from him, even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not."

And, of course, Stider.....
"I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a gift."

Kwijibo

I thought the same thing, actually.... but honestly, what kind of buissiness is Rivendell running? The lack of security!

I liked Boromir's speech in Lothlorien, about the welcome he gets when he goes home to the white city.... its quite sad.

Oh, while we're on the Council of Elrond - The second time i went to see FotR... It was after Elrond had said something to the council about how someone had to take the Ring to Mordor and i think it was this part:

Elrond: "It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. One of you must do this."

Then there was a big pause and the whole council was silent.. i was like, "Okay, lets not all raise our hands at once!" lol
It was pretty funny cuz I mean no one wants to go to Mordor and risk getting killed, and here's Elrond all serious and business-like going.. "alright! who wants to go! :stomper:"

Nessa
July 30th,2002, 01:08 AM
I thought that was rather funny the first time, lol Don't everyone jump up at once, guys!

Continuing the CoE thing, Elrond's terribly cheezy, "You shall be... the fellowship of the ring!" was saved by Pippin's "Where are we going, then?" I never loved the hobbit more dearly.

HobbitFriend
July 30th,2002, 01:20 AM
lol yah, it's like he's too serious. Again, after he said that, everyone's standing still, silent, except for the 2 Hobbits (Merry n Pip) - crossing their arms looking all professional.. then Pippin goes, all excited-like "Right! So where are we going?" lol (<- as you have just said Nessa)
oh those Hobbits just put all the humor in it! (the movie... & the book ;))

Black Rider
July 30th,2002, 02:13 AM
the hobbits are so cute! it would not be the same without merry and pippin

my weird story is that when i saw lotr for the 3rd time, i screamed when Bilbo pulls a "Gollum" on Frodo in Rivendell when he sees the ring. i was so distracted b/c my friends and i were sitting in the theatre laughing and making jokes at the movie (it was their 3rd tims as well) and i didnt even see it coming, and it freaked me out soo much. they still remind me...

A! Elbereth
July 30th,2002, 02:22 AM
The first time I saw LOTR I nearly jumped out of my seat screaming at the part where Bilbo does that. The next three times I nearly closed my eyes becuase I didnt know exactly when it would happen, but after the 4th time I got used to it

Yeah that bit was pretty freaky but then it was shown in everyday trailers on telly so it became a bit less jumpy.
I just got the DVD today and I must say it is mighty fine.

I like Sam's line when he is following Frodo into the water:

Frodo: I'm going to Mordor alone.
Sam: Of course you are. And I'm coming with you.

Also I agree about Boromir's death speech:

"I would have followed you..." That made me cry all over the place mecry every single time (and believe me thats alot of times)

The one line that shatters my heart to pieces, but is my favorite line is:

"I wish the ring never came to me. I wish none of this had happened" ~ Frodo

Makes me cry so hard. I'm tearing right now. I also like Gandalf's reply:

"So do all who live to see such times. All we have to do, is figure out what to do with the time that is given to us." ~ Gandalf

ARGH! mecry mecry mecry And the flashback of this makes me cry even harder because Frodo is crying and I just want to jump into the screen and give him a big huge hug and go all the way to Mordor with him so I can prevent his poor finger from getting bitten off!!!!!!!!!! mecry... that was a bit muchlol

BUT.......... NO MATTER WHAT!! I will always like Pippin the best! no offense to Frodo, Sam, Merry, Legolas, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli, and Gandalf. SORRY!!! I LOVE PIPPIN I CAN'T HELP IT!!!! My biggest wishes are to have a lifesize Pippin Doll that is 3 1/2 feet tall, and to go to Wild Waves with Billy Boyd dressed up in his Pippin outfit and go down a water slide and wait for me at the bottum and I'll jump into his arms and... what was that? oh, yes, got a little carried away with my fictional dreams. "You will unite, or you will fail." - Elrond

Oh yeah and on the Two Towers preview on the DVD I noticed a line by King Theoden that sounded so cool. I think it went like this:
(In the Golden Hall)
Theoden:How many?
Aragorn: Ten thousand strong.
(walking away) Theoden: LET THEM COME!!

:battle: :battle: :battle:

shinjo

Oh my god, I love that part. Theoden looks awesome in TTT, fearless and everything he should be.

Another one of my favorite lines:

"If you want him, come and claim him!" - Arwen

TheRingBearer

Are you serious? :o ;)

Some of them weren't bad...... a few of them on the bridge were decent.... but you're forgetting...

"Whats this? A Ranger caught off his guard?" So entirely not cute in the slightest. Sorry guys, no offense meant. ;)

Galadriel had a few good lines or two...... I like her temptation of the Ring speech, the words themselves are good, its the cgi that blew it.

Favourite lines....hmmmmm. Well, firstly I love Boromir's speach on Caradhras.

"What a strange fate that we must suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing."

Very cool! And secondly, one of the wisest statements in literature, that I think should be quoted time and time again:

"Pity? It was Pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many the live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Profound. A lot to learn from that I think.

Pil

I think the double use of the 'I made a promise' works very well. It draws our mind back to that relatively lighthearted time when they were 'still in the shire'. It makes us reflect on how far they have come, how much frodo and sam have gone through together; and the fact that after ALL that, they are still firm friends. :cuddles:

I have heaps of favourite lines. Ok lets see i love:

"Fool of a Took"
"Nothing important, just a great deal about a ring and a dark lord and something about the end of the earth"
"What about second breakfast?"
and of course

Leoglas: "This is no mere ranger, he is Aragorn son of Arathorn, you owe him your legions"
Boromir: "This is Isildur's heir?"
Legolas: "And heir to the throne of Gonodr"

This isn't exactly my favorite line ... it's just that I only caught it last night for the first time:

My favs-

Sam: "Please Mr. Gandalf. Don't turn me into anything...unnatural" (or something to that effect)

Gandalf: "Fool of a Took! Why don't you throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity!"

Pippin: the mission, quest, thing...where are we going? part - too funny!

Last but not least, Frodo: "I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."

The Frodo and Sam scene at the river!!!! :mecry:

i like the fool of a took part too. I feel sorry for Pippin but the way Gandalf says "Fool of a Took" is cool.

My other favorite lines were in the "You Cannot pass" part.

I especially like Gandalf's, Frodo's, Legolas's and Aragorn's lines. But then that is basically most of the movie. :)

Ah! Maybe most people hate Boromir, but I worship him. In the book, his character could stand a little improvement, I admit, but in the movie, the improvement is totally there! He is so noble and strong and proud and great and everyone in Gondor loves him you know, and are so sad when he dies, and he is like a throwback to the true blooded of Numenor, and he is just so great. And anytime I see anything about Boromir I have to air my views, though you people have probably heard them a thousand times before

Yeah, back on topic, my favorite line is, well, are we doing this for the book or the movie?

The book: ""Believe not that the blood of Númenor is spent, nor all its pride and dignity forgotton." (the one in my sig)

The movie: "Let us hunt some orc." (I know, it's not Boromir, but Aragorn is just as great  )

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
These are my personal faves
1.mirror of galadriel.
Frodo:What will I see?
Galadriel: Even the wisest cannot tell…for the mirror shows many things. Things that were, things that are, and some things… that have not yet come to pass.” She says this with a slight smile on her face, and mischief laces her voice…great line

“Are you frightened”
“Yes.”
“Not nearly frightened enough.” Very nice viggo

“scattered divided leaderless” ah elrond. I love that line just how he says it and looks around when he says it, love it.

This isn’t a line but I love how galadriel says barad-dur in the preview, so neat!

“Nothing important, just a great deal about a ring and a dark lord and something about the end of the earth” same

of course “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!” brilliant
p.s love everysingle elven word spoke in that movie!! it is just so beautiful!

Frodo: No one knows it's here. Do they? Do they, Gandalf?

Pippen: What about breakfast?
Aragorn: We've already had it.
Pippen: We've had one yes, but what about second breakfast?
Merry: Don't think he nows about second breakfast, Pip
Pippen: What about Elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He's nows about those doesn't he?
Merry: I wouldn't count on it Pip.

Pippin: Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this sort of... mission... quest... thing.
Merry: Well, that rules you out, Pip.

Pippin: Are we lost?
Merry: No.
Pippin: I think we are.
Merry: Shh! Gandalf's thinking.
Pippin: Merry?
Merry: What?
Pippin: I'm hungry

Merry: I don't know why he's so upset. It's only a couple of carrots.
Pippin: And some cabbages. And then those three bags of potatoes we lifted last week, and, and, the mushrooms, the week before.

Frodo: "I miss the Shire. I spent all my childhood pretending I was off somewhere else, off with you on one of your adventures. My own adventure turned out to be quite different. I'm not like you, Bilbo."

it's also as if everyone could recognize himself in this painful statement. In real life, we try hard to be like some people we admire, and in the end, we suddenly see ourself as we really are: definitely not a hero. Just ordinary poor people looking for a role in the Big Dream...

It isn't really a line, but during the council of Elrond when everyone is shouting and Frodo stands up and says "Iwill take the Ring to Mordor!"

The look on Gandalf's face at that moment is so moving. You can just feel the pride that he has in Frodo, coupled with his regret that such a small person has to bear so heavy a burden. No words are needed there, just the look on his face. THAT is what I call great acting.

I have a couple... from the book/movie: =) (this is in no particular order)

Galadriel: The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife.
Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all.
Yet hope remains while the Company is true.

"By Elbereth and Luthien the Fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo at the Bruinen Ford

Boromir: One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep, and the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire and ash and dust, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly.

"I will take the ring ... I will take the ring to Mordor...
though i do not know the way." ~Frodo

"I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and if by life or death I can save you, I will"

Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Gandalf to Frodo about Bilbo not killing Gollum when he had the chance:
The key line is this: "My heart tells me that he (Gollum) has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many ---yours not the least."

ahh such a good book =)

Hmm...I thought I had already posted a reply about his topic...maybe not...well...I have a bunch of favorites:

(These aren't listed in any particular order)

"There is only one Lord of the Ring. Only One who can bend It to His will, and He does not share power." (do you remember this part? Right before Gandalf jumps off the top of Orthanc onto the back of the eagle? I love the was way he said this line!

Boromir's death speech!!!!!! mecry mecry so sad!

Gandalf's speech to Frodo in Moria. There is so much truth in what he says. We would all do well to follow his advice!

Pippin's famous, "We've had ONE, yes, but what about second breakfast?" (and that expression after he says it...priceless!

Sam's "I wasn't dropping no eaves, Sir, honest!" and everything he says after this line, great stuff!

Also I loves the beginning with the black screen and Galadriel speaking in Elvish, but also the entire prolouge. Some people may not have liked it, but I did. Lines like, "..but they were all of them deceived...for ANOTHER ring was made." I guess it's just the way she says the line. Also, "It ensnared a new bearer." Pretty much the entire prolouge. Cate had a great way of putting mystery and intrigue into her voice that just realed me in from the very beginning! Very well done.

Well...that's all I can think of for now...but these stuck out the most.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I liked that part, too. Thumbs up to PJ for showing the close relationship between Gandalf and Bilbo. Very heart-warming stuff.

There are so many lines in the movie that stand out to me.... Boromir's last words to Aragorn...."Fool of a Took! Next time throw yourself in!" but my favorite...the one that gives me chills is "Fly! You fools!" (It's even my sig line! LOL)

Yeah, it gave me chills the first time I heard it, too.

My favorite line is when Haldir says "The Dwarf breathes so loud we could have shot him in the dark."

I also like Boromir saying "I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king!" That line sends chills down my spine.

Oh, but you have good taste, Lasgalen! I loved that they kept the line about "the dwarf" :) . As for Boromir' s line, " I would have followed you, my brother"...Oh!...... The first time I heard it, I felt like I had been stabbed in the heart! So powerful!

lol My mom makes me fast forward through death scenes, too. I really don't see the point in doing that, though, because you still see the person die, just a heck of a lot faster. :)

In TTT will she make you fast forward the Helm's Deep battle? The deaths are not close up (except Haldir) so maybe it will be OK

I don't think so, Lasgalen. She's not the LOTR fan that I am, so the deaths in LOTR don't affect her like they do me. Truth be told, it would be more likely for her to want to fast forward through Boromr's death scene than Haldir's.

the "dwarf breathes so loud" line i must admit was a bit funnier to me in the book because they said Sam was breathing so loud and then althroughout lorien sam was trying to breathe quietly...but i must admit that was a very funny line and the glare that gimli sends back in response is priceless

Anything that Aragorn says...OOH!!! Look at the two lines that are said by Aragorn in my signature. Those are two of my favourites.

I have to agree with Catz on this one. I don't care if it's predictable or not, it's just awesome! "Something draws near... I can feel it."

I also love Pippin and Merry's lines! They're hilarious!

"Done..."

"You're supposed to stick it in the ground!"

"It is in the ground!"

"Outside!"

"This was your idea!"

lol yeah, I love that, too. If you watch the FOTR EE DVD (with the cast commentary on), they say that when the rocket went off, it went off FOR REAL, but they didn't tell Billy and Dom that they were going to use a real rocket. So if you listen carefully, you can hear Billy "scream like a little girl". lol
