View Full Version : You are the director - how would you like to see RoTK to end?

If I am the director, the end-scene would be Legolas and Gimli sailing away to the West. Both of them would be giving one last glance towards Middle-Earth and then they would be looking towards the distance in the West.

I would like to end with the grey havens. It shows Frodo saying his goodbyes to Merry, Pippin, and especially Sam, then he and the others board the boat. It sets sail and, though I don't remember the details of what the scene looks like, it should stay as true to the description as possible (going throught the mist then coming to a green land, for example) Musically, I'm thinking something along the lines of the beginning of Many Meetings would work great here. After it shows the ship going into the West, It cuts back to the Havens and shows the rest of the hobbits. They make remarks like "Well, he's gone now. Lets go home." Hobbit theme plays, wide shot of the three of them travelling away from the Havens, fade to black, credits roll.

I would like to see ROTK to end with Merry, Pippin, and Sam returning to Hobbiton, after the entire Grey Havens sequence.
I prefer this ending since LOTR began in Hobbiton, it should also end in Hobbiton, as it was written in the book.

Yes indeed. It should end with the three remaining hobbits walking home. Then (maybe in silence to add to the effect), we follow Sam home where he ends up with his wife and daughter and says the line, "Well I'm back"

I would have the scenes at the Gray Havens and Frodo saying goodbye to Sam and Merry and Pippin. Then the Hobbits go to Hobbiton, with Merry and Pippin splitting off, leaving Sam to go up alone to Bag End. Elanor runs out to meet him (per some photos I've seen on the web), Rosie is at the door. Sam says "I'm back", hugging both of them.
Then cut to Frodo standing in the prow of the ship, Gandalf's hand on his shoulder. No dialog but heartbreakingly beautiful Howard Shore music and the light of Valinor illuminates Frodo's face. The strain and burdens slowly disappear from Frodo's face and we see him smile with joy. Fade to black and credits.

I'd end it just like it was in the book! Frodo's touching good-bye to his three fellow hobbits, and then those three going home! I see most of you like it the same way! roflmao
Windwater Elf, I think your idea's pretty good, too! As long as there isn't too much time between Frodo's departure and Legolas and Gimli's!:) :) :)

Well the end should be when Elanor jumps on to Sam's lap, and BEFORE that we get to se Frodo on the ship towards Valinor.

I think the flash-forward in TTT will be the most we get about Aragorn's death. Course I could be wrong. :)

From what i've heard, a voice over from galadriel will end it, just like it opened fellowship, so it's kinda like it's bookmarking the film with a similar beginning and ending.

no... the exictement is half the fun! the ROTK is going to be CRAZY, i have a feeling it will be the best one... but back on topic, i'm glad galadriel ends it, but i almost wish that it did end with sam saying 'well, i'm back', it has to be one of my favorite ending lines of all time it's such a simple way to end such a complicated epic, the beginning was simple the end was simple i love it

In some ways I'm almost dreading it ending. We've all been on this journey for years - wondering what FOTR was gonna be like, getting hyped up, loving it, discussing it etc etc. Dont wanna think about it but am also dying to see the next movie.
I'd like to see Sam, years in the future closing the Red Book of West March from which he has been reading to his kids whilst sitting around the fire at Bag End - then a flash back to the ship leaving...

Yes, I also dread to see the end of this movie saga as I really looked forward to FOTR, TTT and now it is the turn of RoTK. But as they say, 'all good things must come to an end.' I think I will feel very sad at the end of 2003. It is like we have known the hobbits, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as good friends and now they are leaving us. Still, I look forward to RoTK but with a tinge of sadness.

Frodo gives Sam Bilbo's Book, says "You finish it, Sam" gives Elanor the Phial of Galadrial (aww isn't that special) and goes on the ramp onto the boat, gandalf following.
Sam, Merry, and Pippin watch the boat fade into the horizon.
Next Sceen would be them later riding back home along some random feild, slowly zooming out and up like from a helicopter and looking back towards the sea as the sun sets in the west (does it in middle earth?)
Next sceen would be nightime on the boat and gandalf awakes frodo. They are near a city in Valilala. Galadrial and Elrond are at the front of the boat and the light dances upon thier faces. Frodo gazes at the lights of the ornate city and says something touching to Gandalf (im bad at dialogues) like, "I finially feel the burden lifted from me" Gandalf looks down with his arm on frodos shoulder and the other on bilbo (who is using a cane) and says "and you should, a new life awaits us, free of anger, war, and deceit" Frodo smiles and holds the necklace Aragorn Gave him. Then maybe frodo can say something about his like "I'm glad they're safe Gandalf"
Fade slowly as the boat draws closer and fade out and a bit away from the city as....
Galdarial Talking
'Thus came the passing of the ring bearers of middle earth into the west, and never again came such a burden upon the free peoples of the land'
Fade to total black while she is speaking
Music Change, something a bit happier
You see sam leading bill up to Bag end and opping the gate, eleanor comes out and he hugs her. The sceen is silent except for galadrial talking, explaining how sam became mayor 17 times , and how the tree grew tall and proud, and 'He grew old and happy with his wife and many children'
(i dont think they should have rosie dying as thats a bit sad and him leaving middle earth is also a bit too sad but maybe they could say something like 'And 60 years after his return to the shire, he left for the grey havens to never return, and he passed over the sea, last of the ring bearers.' Scene would be him walking maybe with a walking stick, the sea/towers in sight)
'Merry and Pippin also lived long' something about thier families, something about them going back to gondor 'to thier final rest' (scene might be them walking and singing)
"And after ruling for 122 years Aragorn Son of Arathorn died of old age, loved and honored by the free peoples of middle earth. It is said that the beds of Meriadoc and Peregrin were set beside the bed of the great king. Then Legolas built a great ship in Ithilien, and sailed down Anduin (maybe jsut the great river) and out to sea, and with him went Gimli the dwarf. And when that ship passed and end was come in Middle earth of the Fellowship of the ring.' (scenes, still silent)
Fade to black
PJ's note of thanks for dedication of the fans :)

The book says that Legolas built a GREY ship, not a GREAT ship. Although I am sure the ship was pretty great.

Well I have now two different endings for RotK.
The First:
Frodo and Sam are taking a walk in a forest in the Shire, then suddently they see Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond and some more elves. They speak very shortly and the scene fades to view of the White Towers, and zooms slowly in on Sam, who weeps a little silently but audibly. The camera then pans to the view of the Grey Havens and the Sea.
(NOTE: The movie could end right here)
Then the camera shows the company riding inside Mithlond and shows Círdan, beard and all. There the final parting is between Frodo and Sam (NOTE: I think that Sam might not be the Ringbearer in the movie. ANOTHER NOTE: Frodo has already given the Red Book to Sam). Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf and Bilbo slowly walks up to the boat, then Frodo hugs Sam and both start to cry (NOTE: There should be some very emotional orchestral music to this), Frodo tries to explain to Sam that he has to go, Sam really cries now, then Merry and Pippin show up at the same time that Frodo walks up and in to the Boat right before Círdan enters the boat. The camera now shows the Silhuettes of Sam, Merry and Pippin and how slowly the last ship sails over the Sea. Sam, Merry & Pippin turn back and as the Sun sets the camera also fades to black.
There, that's my movie ending of Return of the King, I hope that PJ does something like this.

That's for me the best end for the trilogy. Frodo deserves to find peace and happiness even it's not openly described in the book (the last chapter).
I wish PJ would made ROTK end that way.
