I think it's gonna be around 4 hours! Nah, that's just what i might hope... still, there's a lot that has to fit into it. You have Shelob, which should take at least 30 min, considering the whole rescue by Sam and all. You have two MAJOR battles, Pelennor (which i'm sure will be awesome!) and the fields of Cormallen, which, although not as long as Pelennor, still is a very big battle with lots of trolls, and eagles, and such. Consider these two, and comparing them to Helm's Deep, they should take about 60-90 min between them. You also have the Rohirrim (sp?), and the Pire of Denethor, and the Grey Havens. And Mount Doom! And Anduril, and the Houses of Healing... and the crowning... and the wedding... thinking about it, a 4 hour movie doesn't sound so crazy after all! Alright, maybe it'll be more like 3 and a half... but still. And then imagine, the Extended DVD! If you think that waiting for TTT was hard...

Yeah, I heard PJ, or something in a magazine i forget which, say that there will be literally over 10 thousand orcs in the major battles for rotk.

I bet PJ's gonna have to cut it down to deliver a three-hour movie. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he then releases a 4+ hour extended cut!
At least they're cutting the Scouring, which though unfortunate is gonna give them a little breathing room.
Ringbearer - I thought there were already 10k orcs at Helm's Deep (remember in the preview on the DVD... "How many?" "Ten thousand strong...") I've actually herd numbers close to 100k for Pellenor Fields!

Yup, that's what i heard too, 100k armies! I can't even begin to imagine how that's gonna look. I forgot to mention the Paths of Dead, and the whole "army of the dead" stuff... i think that it's quite a lot. Imagine, after all is done, watching the extended dvds from Fellowship, Towers and Return of the King... kind of 11 hours of movie!!

100 thousand Orcs?! :elfeek: The Pellenor Fields battle sequence should be quite something of a grand sight indeed. :battle: I already can't wait for December '03!!!
As for the running time of ROTK, I hope it's at least three and a half hours.

I hearc somewhere that their won't be a Cormallen, that part will be at Minas Tirith, if that is included at all, and at this point I wonder...*sniff* And Cormallen is not a battle in itself, Stickman. lol
And if they try to combine the two battles...oooh...I'll be steamed, but surely PJ wouldn't do that!
WAIT. It's PETER JACKSON. He could do ANYTHING. But here's to hope *raises a glass* tho hope has forsaken these lands...
And who knows, maybe they'll try to have someone kill Denethor really quick-like instead of the Pyre and not have Faramir go to Osgiliath at all...wait...he already did!
All sorts of things PJ could do to save time. Good grief. If PJ was sending Shelob to ROTK just so Sam and Frodo will have something to do, he's just making a mess---TOO many things to do in general---for both the characters and PJ himself! I'd go crazy!
And not to mention The Voice of Saruman and The Palantir! I agree with you Stickman, there's surely no way ROTK can be merely 3 hours.

4 hours minimum, and 5 hours complete then...
Haiyo, how many CDs per movie when it comes out in home videos la..?

There has to be a battle at the black gates. First of all, i remember hearing that there was filming there and the person noted that the actor playing Merry was also there, with Aragorn, legolas, gimli, pippin, etc.
Also, if you go here: http://www.quintessentialwebsites.com/lordoftherings/movieshots/Book6_Chapter03.htm#III and scroll down to the movie shot that is above the lidless eye pic, it is definately a battle and doesn't look like the pelennor fields. The shot that pic is from is also in the very first theatrical preview that is shown on the DVD.

Oops, my mistake. The scene is shown on the FINAL theatrical trailer, which is also on the DVD.

you guys do realize that any longer than three hours, the showings will have to be a lot fewer in between, and that would lose them a heck of a lot of money?
there's absolutely no way PJ would do that. 3 10 at the most, id say

Yeah, but groans for us in the theatrical quality... sheesh.

I would really be amazed if the movie topped 3 hours. There is a small chance that it might happen because of the huge succes of the las two movies.

Me hope it's over 3 hrs

December 25th,2002, 09:40 PM
I really think that isn't at all feasible... they could potentially lose money, forget not making as much...
not to mention, as i walk out of the theater i hear a million complaints about it being 'too long' (well this was saturday afternoon and mostly small children LOL)

This a quote from an interview with PJ and Wood,
'It might be much longer," says Elijah Wood, who plays Frodo Baggins, indicating that the last journey, "The Return of the King," will be inching toward the 3-1/2-hour mark.'
Haha, 3 1/2 hours woohoo

I sure hope so! That's the ONLY way they could do ANYthing.

Peter's also quoted as saying, "It'll be as long as it has to be." That sounds promising. It seems to me that in TTT he tried way to hard to condense it to under the three hour mark, so many things seemed rushed, the longer Rotk will be, the better chance there will be of it being quality. Bring it on.

Just curious how many orcs and elves were at the battle shown in the Prologue in Fellowship?

On the official site (www.lordoftherings.net) there is a thing about the special effects of the prolugue. Maybe you'll hear the number of orcs there.

Coming to think about it, since the huge success that FOTR was, and TTT is becoming, i don't think they have to worry that much about money, do they? Well, of course, they might want more, but i think PJ will do the right thing and, as he said, make it "as long as it has to be". Sorry for confusing the battles :) But there is a battle before the Black Gate, with trolls and stuff! And then the eagles! Also, can't wait to see the Mouth of Sauron, and the 9 nazgûl, and Gandalf confronting the Witch-King of Angmar, and the "corsairs of Umbar" changing the tide of the battle... I could go on and on forever! It'll be the best one in a trilogy of best movies!!

3 and a half hours in the cinema will seriously rule!
Hopefully it won't get too uncomfortable lol

Ack, LOTR fans should never be uncomfortable spending hours upon hours watching LOTR. What's an extra half-hour?

I have just seen TTT for the second time at a different cinema with comfy seats.
I have a bad back (very bad ) I took extra pain killers and made sure I had a taxi to take me home to a suitable alcoholic muscle relaxant.
Point ?
Don't care if it IS 3 hours ++
Even 4 hours ++
I WILL see ROTK
and it better have the paths of the dead and the fleet unfurling inspiring flags

Yeah, hopefully the can expand on the true destiny of Aragorn. The final trailer for TTT made it look like it was about Aragon but it truley wasn't.
