I have heard a rumour that the scouring of the shire will be out! Is this true and why!!!!! It seems essential to the story's ending....IMO that is. SO what is the truth.....?????:elfeek:

It has been made clear by Peter Jackson that the Scouring of the Shire will *not* be in RotK... sad news

as he paid a 'tribute' to it in the mirror of galadriel scene from 'fellowship'.

But how will Sharkey die? And what about Wormtongue?

I had heard they killed Saruman off in the TTT- but that's obviously not the case.

i heard the same rumour, Laurelin, and then the movie came and went and he was still alive. strange...

I think one possibility is that Gandalf will deal w/ Saruman. He could be destroyed after Gandalf breaks his staff and such.

I can understand why the scouring will be left out of RotK. It would be sort of anti-climactic if after just winning a war for all of middle earth, the hobbits went back to the little Shire to set things straight. I loved it in the book, but for movie purposes, it just wouldn't do.

From what hear (and it may not be true), Saruman dies on one of the killing machine that he invents. From the picture I saw (and this is very vague) I think it's kinda like a big wheel with spikes on.
I think it's suposed to be a kind of justice that he dies on one of his creations.

This may not be right, so feel free to correct me if you know different.

I have heard the same rumor of Saruman's death, Nessa. I actually like what PJ is doing with the films. I think people who see ROTK just to see a good movie would think the ending was too stretched out if he included the scouring of the Shire. The film will be much faster with portions like Shelob and perhaps Saruman's death at the beginning of the film, so the audiences won't mind drawn out introductions of characters like denethor and other people of Gondor in the middle. And, to most movie-goers, I think the scouring would just be too depressing.

I see from the descriptions given here of the possibilities for replacing the Scouring and though it will make me sad, I agree that this will be better off left out. And, to most movie-goers, I think the scouring would just be too depressing I don't think I thought of that until you mentioned it! I completely agree because of how it made me feel when I read it! I hope that RotK will be as good or even better then the first 2. Thanks for the info folks...;)

Yup, I've heard plenty of rumors about Saruman's death! How he dies is still a mystery to me! :( Too bad they cut out the scouring of the Shire... It was one of my favorite parts in the books! I understand, though, that it is hard to place in the movie...

I think that the scouring of the Shire was a very important part of the story, in the books. But maybe it's too much for a movie!? The main story, if you can call it that, is to get the ring destroyed, and when that is done most people will expect the movie to be over, I guess. I trust that PJ will make a good movie out of it anyway, even without the scouring. I wouldn't mind though if he put it on a DVD.. but I guess that won't happen.

I embrace the cutting of the scouring of the shire (among the other book/movie changes). My reaason being that you need to have parts that are just for the book. If the movies were exactly like the books, then the books would loose their imagination; you would see the movie scenes whenever you read the books from then on. With the cuts and changes, there are still parts that can remain secret and locked in our imaginations and not be spoiled by a movies interpretation of it.

I don't think the books would loose imagination. Not everyone is going to read the books and imagine in their heads how it was done in the films. The Scouring is the perfect touch for these films because of the themes in that chapter. Every Tolkien fan knows that. It would probably only take up 20 minutes. I think that they have plenty of time to go back and film it before its release. ;)

I just started reading the books and i am no where near the return of the king book yet but i know see why book fans get upset...THESE ARE JUST RUMOURS no one knows what's going to be in the movie because none of us have seen the movie yet. He may suprise us, no one knows. Be happy, dont worry, it's all nicein the end. WE will all be satisfied in the end. my heart tells me this!!!

I kind of agree with ya Frodo. ;) I understand, since you haven't gotten to ROTK yet. PJ may surprise us or is probably trying to trick us. We don't know. Still, we have ALL YEAR to talk about it! lol Of course, we're going to talk about other things, but it's still cool to talk about one of the most loved chapters in the ENTIRE TRILOGY. Anyway, what chapter are ya on now? :p
