View Full Version : As good as it gets

I watched this movie the other night for the first time, (one off my list!), and was, shall we say in a modest fashion, happy with it! Nicholson has ofcourse a great talent in playing obnocious, but he portrayed the ***hole that was controled by his compulsive mental disorder in a way that made me turn the lights on upstairs. Why does an urge to be in controle make some people create such patterns, that in its own turn controles their lives?
But what was mostly interesting was the fact that his own compulsions brought him to take the first step out of the life he had lived for years and which he considered safe. Which I think could show that people need a challenge, no matter what state of mind they're in. The confusion in Nicholsons face whenever he understood that he had stepped out of line was priceless! And when Helen Hunt didn't react to him the way he had anticipated, he was so struck with surprise every time!!
Anyone else see this movie? I'd love to hear your opinions! It's a piece that probably should be watched more than once.

this has gotta be one of the funniest films i have ever seen. jack nicholson is just priceless and wholly deserved his oscar award for his cracking performance.
there are so many fave moments in this movie - too many to mention, but i think cuiel got the whole gist of the film spot on! ok, my ultimate fave scene is where melvin (nicholson) introduces carol (helen hunt) to simon (kinnear) and vice versa, and says:
"carol, the waitress; simon, the fag"
superb!
hey cuiel, you seem to love all the movies i do! have u posted your top ten list in the thread 'top ten movies of all time'? i have, so if you wanna have a peek, and let me know what you think? it's ok if you disagree with my choices heh heh!;)

Oh thank you Ronin, I was beginning to worry if noone else saw the agany through what might just seem funny. I believe in the fact that humor helps in most cases...but a malfunction that completely controls a persons life is hard to make fun of. Nicholson did that very well, I recall the look on his face when entering a shop, which had a mosaic- tiled entrance!

Humour does help, especially in certain tense situations to level out the drama of whats going on. (just as in TTT). the movie, in many instances, is very much a tragic play...with resolution, but was a great depth of hear and passion

So true, and the presence of humor can turn what elsewise would be totally depressing and mindwrecking into something bearable.

and we all need that...release from what would otherwise be too real and too cumbersome

performer yes.......actor.....sometimes not.....he has a tendency to play Jack Nicholson.........as long as thats what you exspect thats fine......but its not acting.........thing is, he IS capable of acting, and acting well..........from the sounds of things he does so in this.
