LOTR: TTT is looking to make over $100 million in the U.S. alone by the end of the weekend. As of Saturday, it stood at $82.3 million total  . I am also happy to report that Gangs of NY has only made $6.4 million, meaning that Viggo and Orlando have replaced Leo as the biggest hotties in the movie business.

(note: FOTR only made $94 million from its opening day to the following Sunday in the U.S. So go Peter Jackson for making such an awesome sequel!!! )

Two Towers smashes Rings record in Australia:

The second Lord of the Rings instalment has smashed the box office record set by its predecessor, raking in $5.2 million on its opening day.

Sell-out crowds stampeded cinemas around Australia on Boxing Day to catch Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers as it hit the big screen for the first time.

Advanced sales had taken care of the bulk of the tickets with early morning movie-goers snapping up the remainder.

Last Boxing Day, The Fellowship of the Rings, the first in JRR Tolkien's trilogy, opened recording $4.1 million, earning it a spot in Australian cinema history as the largest single day's trade ever.

Roadshow Film's chairman Ian Sands said he was ecstatic that the record had been smashed.

"This beats everything that has ever been released ever in Australia," Mr Sands said.

He had not yet spoken with the film's director Peter Jackson but said he would.

"Yes we will definitely be getting in touch with New Line (the film makers), they will certainly know about it," he said.

Last year, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings ran for about 17 weeks and Mr Sands was expecting a similar run for this film.

"You can never tell from the first day and give that because of the response to the first one, we would expect it to run almost parallel to the first."

Two Towers opened last week in the US, UK and New Zealand and Mr Sands said the takings were on par with those already collected.

"It is all relative, but yesterday's figures being in excess of last year is just sensational," he said.

In the US, The Two Towers has grossed over $200million in only 12 days, making it tied for second fastest to reach this amount. The film it's tied with is Attack of the Clones, #1 is Spider-Man. So far it's beaten all competition, even the Tom Hanks-Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can!

Go Two Towers!
