2) Prozac Nation - simply because the book was so good..:)
3) Matrix Reloaded - the first one was brilliant! WIll give the second a shot although it is no longer based on the original material that made the first so good.
4) Ned Kelly - Australian legend whose lifestory i read..looks good..even better coz Orlando is in it! :whoohoo: :wiggle:

Chicago, based on a broadway musical of the same name. I forget the entire premise but it's got some great music and the roles Zeta-Jones and Zelwegger are playing are hysterical! Richard Gere's role is amusing too. I know the women are two ex-con's on parole who go into business together preforming ( I think) ;)

my sister saw chicago, the musical and thought it was amazing. i've never seen moulin rouge, which is supposed to be similar, but i've heard that's fab too, so i'll give chicago a try.
Bena
January 10th,2003, 08:58 PM
Moulin Rouge is so much better!!!!
I saw Chicago the other day, and Moulin Rouge is better in so many ways. Don't get me wrong, I feel like it wasn't a waste of an afternoon or anything, but Chicago I really don't think deserves as much award buzz as it's getting.
In Moulin Rouge, the songs are better, the story is better, and the acting is better. I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zelleweger and Richard Gere were great, but they didn't leave me feeling as emotionally moved as Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor did. Chicago seemed much shorter and maybe that's why the story didn't seem as in-depth. Also, I couldn't develop any real sympathies for the characters in Chicago, they were far too superficial, except Renee's husband in the film. I loved the characters of Moulin Rouge.
Maybe I'm bias because I'm a Ewan McGregor fan, but honestly, even if it weren't Ewan McGregor, I think I would still prefer the storyline and music of Moulin Rouge best.

ooo this''ll be fun right in the year of sequels (and sequels of sequels):
X2; M2&3; T3; ROTK (duh! Get's my number 1 spot overall - if the only way to see this was to not watch another movie - I would do it damn it!); I'll probably also see Charlie's Angels 2
The Hours,
Chicago,
Ned Kelly (not just 'cause its got Orli and Geoffrey Rush);
Pirates of the Carribean (not just 'cause its got Orli and Geoffrey Rush) lol;
The Quiet American;
Solaris;
ST:Nemesis (well I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to this as I thought I would be .... we'll see ...I was more excited about it latst year ... I'll still see it)
Adaptation;
The Singing Detective (though I'm thinking it probably wont be as good as the series - if I say that that way i wont be too dissappointed when i see it ;) )
Emperor's Club (maybe, but prolly wont be dissappointed if I miss it);
Hable Con Ella;
8 Mile (opens next week);
Shaolin Soccer (hehehe);
Master & Commander 1;
The Hunter (or The Hunted, though I haven't heard anything about this in a while; has Tommy Lee Jones in it)
The Last Samurai (I should be in the US by then);
Oh I'll probably also see The Hulk (partially curious ...partially a bit of Australian loyalty for Eric Bana...)
I'm sure there's oodles I'm forgetting about, and even more ooddles I don't know about...
(ooo and for Orli or Ned Kelly fans the site (http://www.nedkellythemovie.com/) is up properly now).

the buzz is that chicago is most likely contender to win best picutre oscar this year, and ttt will probably be overlooked as fotr was last year, which is absolutely disgusting. what is wrong with the academy awards ppl??? i mean c'mon, a beautiful mind being considered a better film that fotr? yuh right!
i haven't seen any t3 trailers yet - i wasn't even aware that it'd finished filming! daredevil looks promising, and ben affleck even looks spunky for a change!
Iarfirithwen
January 11th,2003, 02:11 PM
Yeah I've heard that buzz in just the last few days - that Chicago is the one most likely to get Best Picture. But then I've heard a few people say Moulin Rouge was better :huh: I adored Moulin and I think it deserved its GG for Best comedy/musical but not an Oscar.
I think the format for TTT (No end, no beginning) will let it down. I actually thought A Beautiful Mind deserved it but I would've voted for FOTR (it also deserved it ~ BIG TIME. I'm hoping that ROTK will be the one). The academy awards can be very political from what I hear. I suppose its the case in any voting arena though more so in this case (because of the publicity). Even the visual effects category is apparently political.
You can see T3 trailer on the apple site (http://www.apple.com/trailers/) (don't look at the teaser, which is only good for the theme music). I'm definitely going to watch it but I'm not expecting it be better than 1 or 2.
Arwen Undomiel
January 11th,2003, 02:14 PM
yeh, t2 was about as good as a sequel can get for me!
academy has never been keen on fantasy films - no major oscars for any of the star wars movies - and ttt will probably only garner technical accolades at this year's oscars. it's just the way the academy works.

Agreed with both hands up!lol
With regards to HERO, its actually a Chinese film by Zhang Yimou (heard of him?) starring Zhang Ziyi ( Crouching Tiger), Jet Li ( Romeo must die), Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung...
Its a philosophical action movie along the lines of Crouching though looking at the first trailers, i do feel its cinematography is better....
i think it will be a good show to catch! :)
Is it showing anywhere else outside of Asia soon??

Iarnarwen's (:wave: hi Nar!) comment about the trailer for Hero sent me looking for one. You can find one at the Official Site (http://www.herothemovie.com/) or at Rotten Tomatoes.
After seeing the trailer its definitely on my list for 2003.
Zhang Yimou, I have heard of him, well I didn't recognise the name at first, but Raise the Red Latern was mentioned in the trailer (I've seen this and adored it). He also directed Ju Dou and Shanghai Triad

Hi Iar! yup, this was actually the first show from Zhang that i watched. it really impressed me, the way he used the experiences of the female protagonist (Gong Li) to comment about the social fabric of China at that time...tho i have to say..his shows can sometimes be a little heavy going...;)
If you guys have watched the trailer, have you noticed how they actually made use of various colours to symbolise different moods and feelings of the various characters? i thot it was quite beautifully done!
i also love the part where two of the characters are fighting over this lake, and you can see the beautiful and clear reflection of the mountain in the water...
in my opinion..sometimes, watching shows with such beautiful and surreal settings does wonders for the soul...:)

Umm, that“s not true ... when the Wacholski Brothers "wrote" "create" THE MATRIX they thought about it from the very beginning THE MATRIX as a Triology.

i never heard about samsara and 9 queens

Here in Germany the Prices are strange
my two favorite theaters have differnt prices
rex: shows "older" movies, not old ones... ummm, movies who will release soon on dvd ... which is nice if you missed them in the normal theater. in the rex you pay for every movie 2,55 : ))
ufa palast: is my favorite theater here ... i know its old and not that modern but it has his special charme ...
tuesday you pay 4,50 - 5,00 euro, at the weekends betwen 7,50 - 9,50 (depends on the movie) ... other days are 6,00 - 7,50 (i never understand this system so thats why i“m going tuesdays.
also we have the cinedom here, a modren wonder thing ... its always so loud there ... people are snobby .... normal days you pay 6,00 at the weekend something between 9,00 - 12,00 euro.
also the ufa is easier to walk home for me : ))

i read somewhere before that Singapore has one of the cheapest movie prices in the world..dunno how true it is..
we pay $6.5 for mondays thru thursdays ( till 5), then $7.5 for thurs evening to friday before 5, then $8.5 for friday evenings thru Sunday..
all the theatres in Singapore are cineplexes..its so cool to read about the cosy small neighbourhood theatres some places have..think it beats watching a movie in a big, commercial place anytime, even tho perhaps for shows like LOTR, i do appreciate the better sound and screen i guess...;) oh well..win some, lose some..
which kinda theatre do you prefer?
Arwen Undomiel
January 18th,2003, 04:51 PM
ticket prices in UK are normally around £3.80 before 5pm and then £4.80 afterwards. some cinemas offer a once-weekly all-day cheap day when prices are cheaper.
Pinklotus
January 18th,2003, 05:05 PM
The Rex is an old theater .... it has bigger "rooms" (?) and smaller ones.
the small ones have about 30 very comfy leather seats *g*
ok, its a bigg livingroom, but i like it
um, i don“t care in which theater i go, as long it is not so full .... i like it if you have room between the people. it“s not that i don“t like it to sit next to a stranger but its more comfy if you have some space (for your jacket etc.)

saw 'daredevil' yesterday and, i gotta say, it's UTTER BOLLOCKS!!! the trailers were so good and i was highly anticipating this flick but it's such a dire disappointment. ben affleck has never had any charisma, wit nor charm to save his life and the same applies to 'daredevil', in which he stoops one level below 'zombie'. he's pasty-white, hairy-chested and dull, dull, dull. i can't count the number of times i peed myself laughing at the clichéd and contrived script and overtly cheesy lines, and the fight scenes are too choreographed and stiff and 'matrix'-rip-offs. daredevil's suit is a ghastly red, leather, sado-masochistic number and all he would need is a whip and dog-collar to start a franchise for sex-shops.
the only delight out of the whole film was colin farrell, who looks and moves well and has the pick of the best lines (although that isn't saying much). michael clarke-duncan was about as scary as a carrot and jennifer garner offered more pecs-appeal, rather than sex-appeal.
this laughable 'movie' renders 'spiderman' the 'lord of the rings' film trilogy of comic book-film adaptations. god help us all when the sequel arrives - at least we have a few years until that apolcalyptic moment is upon us, and ben affleck can try and pick up some acting tips and redeem his career.

I don't know yet because I still haven't watched TTT. That's the first priority. lol Matrix Reloaded I wanna watch. I also want to watch Master and Commander with Billy Boyd.
