View Full Version : An idea for knowing were everyone is from.

Ok, I know you can see the location of the members in their box but there are to many members so I got the idea of making a sort of map woth all the continents (except antartica), fairly big maps showing only one continent at the same time. On this map we should nicely see all the countries and states. Every member will be shown on this map with a symbol( a dot or a letter or something else) in his land or state. You should ofcourse be able to click it and see who it is. The general idea is that you can just go to the worldmap and find out who lives in your country or state without losing to much time and then send PM and stuff. There could be more interaction between the members this way. If Fatty or someone else can arrange the interactive maps, then I will make sure the location of every member is available sorted per country or state in a nice file I'll make at home. The problem ofcourse is that certain people fill in Rivendell as a location or nothing. It isn't to late to change that or they can just PM me their location so I can put them in my file.

Ok guys what do you think. Say something if you agree.

That could be fun. I think. Just to see where we all live on this cold planet. Keverzwijn, hoe kom je toch op dat idee?!

Eigenlijk door jou, ik vond het leuk om te weten dat er iemand in de buurt woonde. Nu nog wachten op iemand uit België. Thx for the support.

Leuk idee hoor! Ben benieuwd of het lukt!!
Groetjes :) ...en prettige kerstdagen natuurlijk ;)

December 25th,2002, 03:47 PM
OMg, het loopt hier gewoon vol met nederlandstaligen. Van waar ben je oorspronkelijk?

UPDATE: it would also be nice if you could click on the country or state so it would appear in a new window as a big map so you can see who lives there.

Het word nog druk hier! :) Breng ik nog s iemand op een idee! Das leuk!

Like this: click on a country and then see the different city's right? Sounds like fun to me!

Ok, this is fun to chat with the dutch speaking community but we should keep to our subject. Get the word out about this thread, let us hear what you feel.

I think it would be a little to complicated to show where everyone lives on the map per city but you could send a PM or you might find it at their personal info.

Oh....eh...sorry for that! Yeah sure great man! eh..... right:)

Merry Christmas to you too, Blind Guard- and for everyone else!

Why, thank you very much indeed, Frodo's love!

Is everyone asleep here? This idea is not getting much responce! Or am I just mistakin?

Keverzwijn
December 27th,2002, 01:02 AM
No you're not mistaking but this isn't a popular forum. I told Illu about it yesterday.

Illuvatar
December 27th,2002, 01:42 AM
And Illu hasd taken council with Fatty on this matter.

Please be patient, good things come to those who wait;)

We have some investigating to do, as to how to pull this off and do it justice, or if it's functionally do-able in the first place.

I will update you as soon as I can......promise.

OK, thanks. But remember, I'll do all the work I can do for it but I don't know anything about programming.

Ok well Illuvatar pointed this out to me. I will look into it. Do you forsee it being one person to update the map or everyone being able to. Maybe we could schedule updates with you doing the compiling of new locations from new members etc.

I will have a look this week and see what I can coem up with.

A great idea by the way!

Fatty

Keverzwijn
January 8th,2003, 01:06 PM
Yes, it might be easier that members could put in their own location. It's in their own advantage so they probaly won't fill in a different location in the map. You can fill in 'Rivendell' in your personal info but I don't think people do that on the map. We could make a few announcements and a few sticky's on the forums and the site so that everyone knows about it. This way only the active members will be on the map wich is also an advantage. The other option is that I collect all the data and people who fill in 'Rivendell' or no loaction at all, can PM me or I PM them if this doesn't work. There are several new members everyday so we could make them contribute their location to the map when they register. I was thinking about just clicking the map instead of typing it in somewhere. This will be easier cuz maybe not everyone is sure what's the name of their country in English. We could also make it more specific by letting them place a dot on on the 'precise' place they live in their counrty. Ofcourse they could also PM each other to know the precise location. I've got the whole thing figured out, if it's possible in a program.

Bonos-Girl
January 8th,2003, 02:04 PM
...that sounds so cool....i really hope it can happen!!!

January 8th,2003, 03:35 PM
Hey that could be really interesting ....

Could it be a combination of a Macarthers Universal Corrective Map of the world (http://www.flourish.org/upsidedownmap/mcarthur-large.jpg) and a Peter's Projection (http://www.webcom.com/~bright/petermap.html)? roflmao

Seriously the idea is great. You can ignore the second bit I said (I just adore those maps ;) ).

Bonos-Girl
January 8th,2003, 05:45 PM
erm....is this a stoopid question.....but...why is the Macarthers Universal Corrective Map of the world upsidedown?

Lady Arien
January 8th,2003, 05:55 PM
I think your idea is a great one, but there are some people who don't put their home city and/or state in the profile for personal/privacy reasons....myself included, and there is no way we can "make" new members contribute that information if they don't want to...but for those who do want to participate, it would be quite an interesting project....provided we have the resources to do so.

Keverzwijn
January 8th,2003, 06:17 PM
Yeah sure, if you don't want to contribute to the map. I can't see why, but OK. And if you haven't filled in the location, you can still do that in a minute. With a few announcements and sticky's we could ask people to fill it in. Or, they could point out their locotion themselves on the map if we make it 'interactive'.

...isn't this gonna happen? Looks cool to me...anybody wanna enlighten my dumb old brain on why they wouldn't contribute to it? Only your friends know your real name, there won't be an addy on the map...what's could possibly happen?

Okay...okay.......you win.......hehe

I could see where this could be an interesting idea and will research to see what type of "Member Map" hacks are available for VBulletin forums.

I've got a wee bit on my plate at the moment, so please bear with me and give me some time to research this one as well.

I'll report back here with my findings.

I found a UserMap hack for vBullettin, but it uses Flash. I don't know, whether this fact is a disadvantage to use this solution?

Illuvatar
July 14th,2003, 09:10 PM
Thanks STG, I'll probably be trolling the hack board this evening and see as well. I don't think flash would be that big of a deal, just gotta see the layout, etc.

Knowing where everyone is from would be really helpful for the "In Expectation of RoTK " thread. It would help those who want to plan a line party to do so.

Hey, I totally forgot about this thread, I thought noone cared about it. Great to see that people still like the idea. I'm still willing to do what I can to make this work. It's very good to see that the idea worked on an other site. Very hopefull :) . When Fatty or Illu give us the green light, this will work for us. There will be a new thread in the musicforum based on another marvellous idea by me and Ronin. It will be up in a few days. Go check it out. :)

I think that a member map would be a fantastic idea...i agree with whoever said it would make gatherings much easier to organise.

Aranethiel
July 27th,2003, 02:56 PM
The whole map idea would be great for planning gatherings of local LOTR fans. I thought I was all alone around here until I got this really strange message on my answering machine. I had written a letter to the Official LOTR Fan Club and they actually published just about all of it (go me! :) ) then they printed my name and home town. Another local LOTR fan read it and then called everyone in the phone book with the same last name looking for me. (Luckily I live in a very small village.) She turned out to be a wonderful girl and I am so glad to have found a new friend. But what a tough way of having to find a fellow LOTR lover. roflmao

How great that you found a new friend and fellow LotR lover. I live in a big city, but never seem to find others from my area. Only at one other board did I find a couple of fellow Arizonans.

Periantari Andruil
August 10th,2003, 07:43 AM
oh yes, i need to know where the fellow tri-state LOTR lovers are located... i must go insane if i didn't have WOTR to vent out my love for LOTR lol
and all those LOTR meet-ups i can't go to for one reason or another... if only i can convert my friends....... ;)

a map would be great =)

It didn't work for me. Do you have to be a paying member? It did say members AND guests. Are there rules?

Illuvatar
October 19th,2003, 05:09 AM
Nope ..there are no restrictions other than a 1,000 member limit which we may try to address.

We pay monthy for this software, so unless you've got a really old browser it should work just fine.

Can you tell us exactly what type of an error you received?

OK... ;)
1. Zoom the map to see where you put your sign to
2. Press 'Post' button
3. Point and click to the place where you'd like to see yourself
4. Fill the form
5. Press 'OK'
6. If nothing happens, go to Step 1 and repeat the process till night falls (or sun rises)

Good luck... lol

Okay......

click "Where are you from" at top of page
click "Hide welcome message" when it displays.
click "Zoom +" to enlarge map
click button marked "Post"
click "OK"
Stick the push pin where you live
Fill in blanks...name...email....comment, etc....pick an icon and a flag.
click "submit" and you're done.

Hope this helps! :p

Umm... did you permit JavaScript to run?

Arninquelote

Steve the Great
October 22nd,2003, 09:25 PM
OK, let's try some distant support...
Do you use Internet Explorer?
If the answer yes, choose Tools menu and then Internet Preferences (I think that it is its Englsih name, actually it's the last option from this menu)
You'll see a dialog box with more tabs: you should choose 'Security'. There you can see the actual Security Level. If it says that security level is high, it's quite sure that something (JS) is blocked that is needed to UserMap... (I think)
Huhh... lol

Illuvatar
October 22nd,2003, 10:44 PM
Yes....I believe that StG is on the right path...

Also......you should be able to double click on that yellow triangle and tell us what type of error you are getting.

Arninquelote
October 22nd,2003, 11:00 PM
This is the error message:

Code: 0
URL: http://pub1.bravenet.com/guestmap/show.php?usernum=85893111&password=&zoom=2&movetox=360&movetoy=210

The javascript permission thingy is set on high safety. I changed it to medium to see if that made a difference and it didn't - still not able to post my location.

Steve the Great
October 27th,2003, 12:50 PM
Distant support part 2 lol
I think you should try to adjust Scripting options (Press 'Custom level' button in this (http://members.lycos.co.uk/stg09/pics/screenshot01.png) panel, then check whether scripting settings (http://members.lycos.co.uk/stg09/pics/screenshot02.png) are turned to 'enable')

btw. you can change security settings in certain sites independently if you add them to Trusted Zone, as you can see in Screenshot01 above - through the 'Sites' button. (So you don't need to use lower security level regarding the whole internet)

I hope this may help...
