I've seen a short clip of something out of rotk but i'm not sure if it was that film or not, it looked more like a pre viz clip or something. Anyway Gollum, looking more like a gnome, standing up straight and acting quite posh (don't ask) gets the ring and throws Frodo's finger away. He then goes into a little sort of speech before just going "Smeagol's got the precious" repeatly till he falls in.
It is very bad but does anyone think this is from the rotk animated film?? (probably not)

ARGH! I have terrible repressed memories from the animated Rotk.....
I saw it when I was young and developed an awful fear of Gollum.... I'd completely forgotten ever seeing the damn thing by the time I began to read Lotr about a year ago. While reading TTT I discovered that Gollum gave me the creeps more than he should, and I remembered that little cartoon just as I was reading the Mt. Doom scene of Rotk. I'm mostly over it...........
I don't recall "Where there's a Whip, there's Way," but "Frodo of the Niiiine Fingers and the Ring of Doooooom" seems to ring a bell....... Is that from the cartoon?

It was a muscial cartoon version of ROTK from the 1980's.

It seems pretty pointless doing a film of just ROTK. Not many people would get what was going on. How did it open?

You'll love this, At Bilbo's birthday some years after the ring was destroyed All of the hobbits, Gandalf and Elrond meet Bilbo in Rivendel. A minstrel wrote a song about Frodo's journey and sings it for Biblo who dosen't know what happened to his ring and Frodo's finger. "Frodo of the 9 fingers, and the ring of Doom!"
After catching up it starts with Frodo stuck in Minas Morgul and the Seige of Gondor, they skip Shelob and the paths of the dead although Aragon does return with the black fleet!

Is it worth my time to see this movie? How is it compared with the 70's Bakshi, or whatever, one?- (which I did see)

It is the same Animation as The Hobbit. It's good for a laugh. I would rent it.

Its definitely worth watching, if for no other reason than the singing orcs:Orc:

It's definitely nothing too spectacular but it is worth it as a taste of the wonder that PJ will produce for his version of ROTK. And of course singing orcs...

Rankin and Bass made The Hobbit in 1977 or 78, and Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings animation showed up in 1979. He had hoped he'd be able to do a sequel but didn't get the greenlight from the studio because the first one didn't make any $. So Rankin and Bass made ROTK to pick up where the LOTR cartoon left off and capitalize on the interest in the trilogy. And some think -- to keep Bakshi from doing it himself.
I found a place on the net that's selling it and got it recently -- it's good for a laugh. roflmao
Isn't it interesting, tho, that every once in a while, Tolkien's work comes back into the popular media. I was in high school when The Hobbit cartoon was first on TV, and that was my introduction to the books. Before then, I'd never heard of them. Now, you have the whole thing happening again, 20+ years later, but MUCH much better. I've heard that this latest wave of Tolkien craze has inspired many to read the books for the first time, and that's always wonderful.

And let's all hope that it happens again soon, when someone makes The Hobbit.

No, that's definitely not from the animated RotK. lol In that version, Gollum looks more like a frog and never acts posh. After biting off Frodo's finger, he does a crazy little dance while looking at the ring, steps on breaking rock, and takes the plunge. Never once is it mentioned that he's really named "Smeagol."
Side note: That animated version Gollum scared the beejeeses out of me. I swear I was so afraid to see Gollum in the movie because of that cartoon. Can't help but smile whenever I hear PJ's Gollum talk, because he's so cute compared to the cartoon Gollum.
But yeah, while things are really squished in there (and a lot of stuff left out) I liked that cartoon. My first real introduction to Lord of the Rings. And if PJ added the orc song,
 that'd be so cool.

To each his own, I guess. I LOVE R/B's Gollum precisely because he does look like a frog -- he's even green! The scene with Bilbo for "Riddles in the Dark", in their version of The Hobbit, is what hooked me on Tolkien!

I'm so glad I'm not completely alone on that one. lol I have to see Jackson's Two Towers more so that Andy's Gollum replaces R-B's in my head when I read the book....... it used to give me shivers... :o
But I did like the Rankin Bass version A LOT better than Bakshi's, whose didn't crouch much and spoke with no raspiness or coughing...

I love this: The power of the ring is a power never known, the power of the ring once was simple now has grown, beware the power of the ring! it's final purpose is yet to be shown!

It weird to think that PJ's first introductiomn to LOTR was R/B's cartoon! I may get critzism but I thought the cartoon was pretty neat until I saw Movie FOTR. I always liked R/B's gollum. "Where is it? It ours...and we wants it!" R/B's verison can be traced in PJ's TTT too. EX: Both ends with the heros riding away from Helm's Deep, and both end by Gollum saying "She might help"

Not sure what you mean, Dark Lord. R/B's ROTK ends with Frodo and Co. sailing to the Undying Lands. You don't even see Shelob in R/B's ROTK and in fact, the beginning (after the cringe-inducing minstrel scene in Rivendell) is all muddled around to avoid that part. Perhaps you're referring to Ralph Bakshi's movie (who is also RB, I just realized!)?
Do we know that PJ really saw R/B's ROTK, or just The Hobbit?

I think PJ will have an orc say "where there's a whip there's a way" at some point in RotK, just because :p

I'll have to go back and watch that again. Sorry for the misunderstanding -- we were discussing Rankin/Bass' (R/B) ROTK.

OK, sorry about that. Remember, it's the special extented dvd. He says he does a tribute to RB's version when the hobbits says: "Proudfeet"

Oh yes -- I do remember that now -- you're right. PJ said the camera angle was the same. You know, Sauron, you might start a new thread to chat about Ralph Bakshi's movie if you'd like to.
