Very interesting, mellonrim!
This could possibly be from ROTK, if so, presents another 'rearangment'. However, not to bad as I read at TORC something about Merry and Pippin being at Mesueld.
But here's my take on who thses short ppl in the bottom left-hand corner are.
First, note hair color. Movie Merry has blonde and movie Pippin has brown...and one is wearing a hooded cloak. And one is wearing a frock coat that looks like movie Merry's.
So coul they possibly be Merry and Pippin? And if so, what are the others chatting about? The Paths of the Dead perhaps?
Sounds very, very intriguing. Thoughts?

That is a great pic! I've never seen it before. It has to be the golden hall, probably before the Paths of the Dead and before Pippin and Gandalf head for Minas Tirith.
Also, this picture must be Edoras: http://www.quintessentialwebsites.com/lordoftherings/movieshots/merry_theodenpledge.jpg

lol sorry, twin...it would mean "host of friends". Ya know, mellon is friend and "rim" means "host"...so mellonrim: "host of friends" LOL
Yes, I saw that other pic Faramir posted. Well, it would seem they might actually be getting Merry and Pippin's pledges tinot he film! Good, that's one of the classic things.
Yes....the group coming back after Isendguard. But how the heck would they get The Palantir in I wonder? let's see...*summons her prediction cyrstal* I can see it now...the entire Palantir scene at the Golden Hall! Hoom, that would be interesting, even if sadly different. But I suppose we ought to take what we get. *shrug*

You know, I dont think they will have Pippin look into the Palanitr (or at least i wouldn't be to surprised if they didn't; I also wouldnt mind)
maybe they bring it back to Edoras (either Gandalf has it or Aragorn, it really doesn't matter) and Aragorn brings it to the Paths of the Dead, whle Gandalf leaves with Pippin.
This does leave out much of a reason for Gandalf to bring Pippin with him. But it seems the movies have now, with TTT, established these 2 hobbits as much more mature and not so "foolish". Having Pippin do a "foolish" thing, like look into the Palantir would just be a little weird. It may have worked in the books, but may just not feel right in the movie.
I don't know, I may be way off. That's just how i see it right now.

But it's TERRIBLY important. They HAVE to. Even PJ wouldn't deviate that horribly far.

I remember reading an interview of the actors, and them lamenting when they go seperate paths in RotK. So Merry and Pippin will most definatly be seperated, and my guess would be that this is due to Pippin looking into the Palantir. :)

I cant remember where I read it but wasnt there a comment from Billy Boyd that the Palantir scene was the most difficult for him to act?.... From one of the interviews... i have read so many now that they are all merging into one another :)

I gather that like there were multiple death scenes for Saurman filmed there could be multiple Palantir scenes as well. If this shot ends up in the film probably Aragorn will confront Sauron there via palantir.

Not sure how Merry and Pippin got to Edoras, but the positions of all the characters in this photo speaks volumes . . why would Merry and Pippin be kept separate . . in fact Pippin is sitting in a chair, almost as if Gandalf has commanded him to sit down and stay put . . and, Merry is there to make sure that he does. Why else would the two hobbits be sitting so far from their friends? Yet, both hobbits are watching intently . . all that is going on between Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, and Theoden.
I'm trying hard not to read between the lines here, but it does seem like Pippin is somewhat ostracized in the picture.
I do think that the palantir scene with Pippin could have been filmed . . there were spoilers this summer describing Pippin picking up the palantir after it was thrown from the tower. He stops it before it rolls into the waters at Isengard, and pockets it without Gandalf ever noticing. He later has his encounter with
Sauron.
I just can't figure out how or why they would be in Edoras.

Maybe the first scene featuring the Fellowship will be in Edoras. They are remiscing on the events of the past few days, with the Battle of Helms Deep and the destruction of Isengard. What has passed is shown in brief flashbacks, and now they're discussing what to do next in Edoras. Pippin's incident with the Palantir could also be shown in the past.

Flashbacks would be a away of getting through all that quickly so the rest of the movie can focus on Gondor and Mordor (theres so much to get through ...big battles and all). Actually wouldn't Pippin looking into the Palantir be an interesting way to start ROTK ...ah well maybe not since they haven't got it yet... I don't know.
I notice that Aragorn is wearing what looks to be the same clothes he wore when they were all chatting in about war in the hall after Eothain (?) and Freda turned up in TTT. That's not to say he wouldn't wear it again..... Any chance it was some redundant filming from TTT from say a scraped version (like Arwen at Helms Deep bllllaaaaarrg)

The Pippin and the Palantir scene has to be in the movie! Otherwise, what other motivation would Gandalf have to take Pippin with him to Gondor instead of Merry? In the Extended Version, it's pretty clear to see that he doesn't exactly enjoy Pippin's company. If given the choice, it's very doubtful that Gandalf would CHOSE to take Pippin, especially since he has to deal with Denethor. Pippin's much more likely to let his tongue slip than Merry. *coughBreecough*
The way I see it, the scene will probably play out with Saruman "losing" the Palantir and Gandalf will take it because how it the world would Pippin hide the fact that he's carrying it? The thing would be too big for him to put in his pocket or where ever. Anyway, then everyone with return to the Golden Hall and, while they're resting there, then Pippin will steal the Palantir from Gandalf and look into it. Big scare, everyone comes, Gandalf decides he has no choice but to take Pippin away and Merry and Pippin split up. *sniffle* Sadness.
