vedui' ar' mae govannen!
i've been trawling through the language threads and have noticed many of you speaking elvish - yay! - but i'm confused as to whether you're speaking quenya elvish, or sindarin? i speak a little of quenya, although i have a sindarin dictionary so i know a few sindarin words - celmir!
does someone know the main differences between quenya and sindarin? i've been tryng to research it for myself but with little understanding!
also, in the lotr movies, i can understand some of the elvish; however, certain lines e.g. aragorn asking legolas: "what can you see?" does not sound as it would do in quenya elvish, in which case, are the films using sindarin??? i think they may be using a mixture of the two, 'cos aragorn says somethings which are definitely quenya i.e.: "mellonamin" and "hannad lle".
thanx for your help guys!
tenna' telwan'.

We're doing both, the movies has mostly Sindarin, but some Quenya! What concerns the rest, you'll have to wait for a reply from our mods!:)

i will attempt to answer your questions fully, the mods can correct me if im wrong.
first of all, most of us say when we are speaking in Quenya or Sindarin. for example, Wilwarin usually does Sindarin and Isiltari does Quenya... and they say this. If you're confused you can always ask the person who spoke it!
there's this (http://www.warofthering.net/forums/vbulletin225/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1203) thread which explains as much as we can tell you about the difference!
actually, all the elvish except "Namárië" in the film is Sindarin. :) the phrases you mentioned are an example of how close the two languages are, however, the phrases are actually "mellon nîn" and "Hannad le" which are Sindarin... Viggo doesn't pronouce elvish very well, i understand, so it is quite confusing!
-edit... another quenya phrase is supposedly going to be in RotK :)

Very good Tar! Though there are two other Quenay phrases in FotR. Don't forget Saruman's weather spell on top of Orthanc! "Cuiva nwalca Carnirassë! Nai yarvaxëa rasselya taltuva ñotto-carinnar!"
Also Gandalf's second Moria Gate spell: "Ando Eldarinwa a lasta quettanya, Fenda Casarinwa!"
Other than these phrases the Elvish in both movies is Sindarin.

Hmm.......No I wouldn't do that! Even though they are very similar and are both spoken by the Elves, they are still completely different languages with VERY different grammar rules. You wouldn't mix English and Spanish in everyday speach, would you?

Since you're phrase seems to be mostly Quenya Isiltári will have to help you on that! You can practice phrasing Elvish in the Sindairin and Quenya Practice threads too by the way.

it's okay; it was in 'the quenya thread' and you've answered it. but i've posted another question for you on there: what's 'yes' and 'no' in quenya elvish? :)
