Not exactly Two Towers specifically, but...
Anyone know what's the ring Aragorn wears on his left index finger?
It's been in both movies, and I don't recall anyhting about it in the Three Books...
Anyone??

It's the Ring of Barahir, the father of Beren, husband of Luthien. it's actually mentioned in the Appendix talking about Arwen adn Aragorn.
I was very pleased that it's in the movies, though technically, Aragorn gave it to Arwen, instead of her giving him her necklace.
And in The Silmarillion, it's described, under the chapter "Of Beren and Luthien".

The ring was made in Valinor and used to belong to Finrod Felagund. He gave it to Barahir as a token of his oath to aid the house of Barahir in every need.

I has one of my favorite gems in it and it looks very nice on Aragorn. But when did Aragorn give it to Arwen?

Yes, the Ring of Barahir is a beautiful ring, indeed.
I purchased the authorized replica and wear it on the same finger that Aragorn wears his on. When it came in, I was so happy with it that I immediately ordered another one just to keep on hand as a collectors item.

Yeah I too. Wear it on the left hand, pointer finger.

No problem, Big Ranger.
To Tar: silly twin. lol
to Arwen, Elven Princess: Aragorn gave it to Arwen when they fledged their troth (i. e. got engaged) at Cerin Amroth 38 or 39 years before the War of the Ring. (He's actually very old. 80-something.) Mr. PJ obviously has other plans for the Ring of Barahir...

So how exactly does the ring pass on from Barahir to Aragorn? I know as far as Barahir - Beren - Dior then they go to Elwing, then Elros, and down the looong line of Numenorean kings, right? I'm not really sure. But it is a beautiful ring with a lot of history and meaning behind it.
 I love the ring of Aragorn!

I´ve read the appendix 1000 times and it says NOtHING about the ring of barahir.
PJ changed the gift of galadriel ( a necklace with a green stone) for Arwen´s evenstar necklace.
At least it´s what i undestood.

From appendix a in the bit about the heirs of Isildur in the north kingdom:
"Arahael ... was fostered in Rivendell, and so were all the sons of the chieftans after him; and there also were kept the heirlooms of their house: the ring of Barahir, the shards of Narsil"
The footnote to this section explains the ring's provenance
"it was none other than the ring which Felagund of Narothrond gave to Barahir, and Beren recovered with great peril"
It also crops up in the part of the tale of Aragorn and Arwen:
"Elrond... delivered to him the heirlooms of his house.
'Here is the ring of Barahir,' "
and finally in the tale of the years in appendix b
"2980 Aragorn enters Lorien, and there meets again Arwen Undomiel. Aragorn gives her the ring of Barahir, and they plight their troth..."
Thus by the time we get to the action of the war, book Aragorn had already given the ring away.
I have read this WAY too many times .... perhaps I should get a life....... nah ... it's too much fun (sad but true lol)

In My book ( the spanish translation) it says nothing about the ring of barahir WHEN Arwen and Aragorn met in Cerin Amroth.
That´s where the misunderstanding is.

"There king finrod felaguand, hastening from the south, was cut off from his people and surrounded with small company in fen of serech; and he would have been slain or taken, but Barahir came up with the bravest of his men and rescued him, and made a wall of spears about him; and they cut their way out of the battle with great loss. Thus Felagund escaped, and returned to his deep fortress of Nargothrond; but he swore and oath abiding friend ship and aid in every need to Barahir and all his kin, and in token of his vow he gave to Barahir his ring" (pg 177 silmarillion)
kinda random i know lol
and unless i am mistaken that is how the ring came to men!!! lol

Don't be too happy dear, lots of people are snakes... lol as long as they are born in the same year as you are, or share an age difference of 12 years with you. So guys, pls don't get too excitable about the horoscope thing. It's basically sort of an equivalent to the western zodiac... ;)

Does anyone have any idea why snakes are engraved on the ring?
Kenzie
May 11th,2003, 08:57 PM
it has somthing to do with the symbol of finrods house??? not sure one of the people whose name begins with F (for those that haven't read the sil there are like 50) (well not literally)
Undomiel
May 12th,2003, 08:12 PM
Is it the house of Finarfin? Finrod's his son right? I get so confused lolI really liked Aragorn's ring in the movie, i thought it very much as how i had imagined it. What i want though is a replica of Nenya. I did think about getting the Ring of Barahir, but it's not very girly lol
Luvara
May 12th,2003, 08:17 PM

I've got a ring that (purely by coincidence) looks a bit like Narya (that is the Ring of Fire, right? I get confused between Nenya and Narya.)

Yes. Narya is the ring of fire.

May 17th,2003, 10:49 AM

Well yeah, the ring is really cool! Well, so the serpents have got something to do with the symbol of the house of Finrod??
Lasgalen
May 17th,2003, 11:00 AM
I finally found it!!!
Quote from the Silmarillion:
For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house;
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 17th,2003, 11:17 AM
Oh! So that's it! It was from the symbol of the house of Finarfin!
Thanks for the quote, Las! That would definitely clear everyone's doubts!

May 17th,2003, 11:26 AM
what on earth is so gender specific about a RING??? lol
i have a very similar one that i wear all the time......i think its a lovely touch that they included the ring........something that most people wouldnt even have noticed
:catz:
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 17th,2003, 11:33 AM
I agree... lol too much discussion about the manliness that Barahir reflects lol
yes, it's good to see and study all the rings in detail. The people who made these rings deserve some credit too ;)

May 17th,2003, 12:09 PM

Kenzie
May 17th,2003, 02:41 PM
yep thanks for finding it ...
the ring isn't gender specific... i think the serpants make it seem pretty manly .... but gals can have snakes too!! and the snakes are only part of the bueaty of the ring!
Lasgalen
May 18th,2003, 09:05 AM
Some girls like big rings (and that is OK) but some girls like smaller, daintier rings so that is why I think some of them call it manly.
Undomiel
May 18th,2003, 03:42 PM
yeah that was why i said it. I think if i had to choose one i would buy Nenya, but if i could i would get both of them
Kenzie
May 21st,2003, 02:46 PM
nenya's pretty chunky too and that ring seems feminine so i don't think it's necesarily the size... more like the colors and carvings ... like nenya is a whitish color ... very light and delicate looking ... while barahir's metal seems of a darker color and more (i don't know what word you use lol) sturdy?lol lol i dunno
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 21st,2003, 03:22 PM
Hmm... Nenya may cover a pretty big portion of your finger, but it looks dainty enough lol.
Ring of Barahir definitely has a sturdy feel about it. Very suited for a regal ranger lol

May 21st,2003, 03:48 PM
The ring of Barahir is quite cool. Hehe lol I first thought the Ring was stuck in the wrgfur during the horse/warg battle and I first thought that was why he tumbleled of the cliff lol
I would love to see the movie version of that ring for it looks a bit different from the replica's I've seen.... or is that just me ...... anyway the replica's are cool too.
Kenzie
May 21st,2003, 05:17 PM
yhea does the movie ring have gold on it? i've seen replicas that have some gold on it.
Hobbit
May 21st,2003, 07:43 PM
I think not.... but I could be wrong... I don't know....
But just compare this (http://www.noblecollection.com/catalog/product.cfm?id=NN9687&catid=17) version of the ring of Barahir with the one of the movie pic Win posted halfway down the second page of this topic. They just don't look the same while they're both supposed to be the ring of Barahir...
They're both beautiful jewels though, no doubt about that.
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 22nd,2003, 05:52 AM
oh yes I've seen that before. It looks quite nice, but don't really like the snakes. I prefer the movie version Ring of barahir lol
I suppose the jewellers have a right to do their own interpretations of the ring based on the book, cuz I guess there's the copyright infringement problem and all. So we hardly get to see jewellery pieces that look exactly the same as those in the movie.
Hobbit
May 22nd,2003, 04:37 PM
I guess you're right, but it's misleading for someone who wants a true movie collectors item that they talk about the moviering and use a pic from the movie.
I like the movie version better too, although this one is also quite nice..
Kenzie
May 22nd,2003, 10:20 PM

May 22nd,2003, 10:41 PM
Since the rings are hard to see in the actual movie, how do we tell when a site is offering a correct replica vs one of their own design? I would like to eventually get the ring of Barahir, but I want to make sure I get one that looks like the movie.
Luvara
May 22nd,2003, 10:49 PM
