View Full Version : Gladiator, Princess Mononoke and the Hobbit

So, I went to the library a few days ago and rented Gladiator, Princess Mononoke, and the Hobbit (cartoon). I watched them with my sister, who has just turned 12 (she's already seen Gladiator; it wasn't like I was saying, hey, here's a super-violent movie; let's watch it!, and she saw it before I did anyways, so I didn't know it would be so bloody).
She absolutly loved Gladiator [rated R], the bloodiest of the three, though when I asked her about plot points, she didn't know what was going on in the story, only that there was a lot of chopping and stabbing and burning and one smothering.
Princess Mononoke [rated PG-13], which is a japanese anime cartoon movie, dubbed over with some well-known actors/actresses (Billy Crudup, Gillian Anderson, Minnie Driver...), has a nice plot with some good lessons for kids, I think, but it does have some cartoon violence (heads being chopped off, arms severed). She liked this one a great deal, too.
But the Hobbit cartoon [rated G?]? She couldn't bear it! When the first song came on, she ****ed [that's c-o-c-k-e-d, meaning to put up] an eyebrow at me: "When was this movie made?" The slow seventish musical numbers, the lack of back-to-back action, virtually no blood to be seen--right after Bilbo did the riddle game, she officially lost interest and asked to watch some TV.
So, that upsets me a great deal. I was raised on Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's Nieghborhood, and I didn't start watching TV violence until I was 10. The Hobbit is a soft cartoon that I'd want my children to like, and the Gladiator is something I wouldn't want them to see and think, "Cool! That guy's on fire and he doesn't have an arm!" I'd rather they have the shock that I had (though I did enjoy the movie and cried at the end) at the violence in it.
But how 'bout you guys? Violence gone just a wee bit too far on TV and in movies? Cause even the stuff she watches on Nickelodean is no longer to my liking.

I've never been restricted from violent or horror movies, but I used to enjoy the children's movies and cartoons too... as the question is opened, I don't think some animes of today are suitable for children.
I can honestly say that'd I'd prefer a bad action over a bad other movie...

I started watching resricted movies when i was 6 maybe even 5... until i was 10 I thought everyone watched those movies lol I'm 14 now and I feel more mature than most of my friends becuase of what I watch and they watch... if they watch one of those PG-13 comedies... they most likely wouldnt get it and I would... I wouldnt say I was proud... but I seem to find way more interest in the PG-13 and R movies. My best friend wouldnt even see Lord of the Rings becuase she thought it would scare her.....
I still like cartoons and kids shows and i love Musicals.... but becuase i was basically raised watching all those movies... I dont see anything wrong with it and maybe I should... I'd have to think about it more

Heheh....how is your sis alien?
yeah i know what you mean....but i dont think you can take peer presure out of the equation either.....kids watch what their friends watch......or say they watch...and theres always an element of one upmanship in it....that usually flattens out after a while as they get more secure in their own tastes....but i do believe that the media, in general, has devalued violence....trivialised pain...i mean in the movies, guys get up and wander off after being shot....in real life, that dont happpen too often, yet a lot of kids think it does....oh, maybe not conciously, but its internalised, that its not real.......like the comments that was constantly made after the Sept 11 attacks......it was like we were in a movie....that worries me a bit, ya know?

COME, ON! I think we can all agree that Gladiator is a much better film than the cartoon 'The Hobbit', though the story isn't half as good. I think that any of us would rather atch tv than watch a terrible butcher of a book we like so much! i know i would! lol
Film violence is something that doesn't bother me. I used to get shocked when i was in primary school and my friend would claim she watched an 18 film, but now its not a problem (it shouldn't be anyway!)
I personally LOVE action films and expecially war films (think pearl harbour without the soppy garbage!) Anyone c Memphis Belle? That was a cool war film...

Yes catz I know what you mean... if reality was what those films showed I wouldn't be typing now, it might be good to watch when you want no thought to dwell in your head, but otherwise they cause violence, which doesn't have the end of a covered with red paint hero with a nice looking girl riding to the sunrise... Especially all those teenagers with guns at school, it recently happened here to, even though it was a mild case if such case can be mild... That's just not right ):

See, that's what my arguement is. If you think the story isn't good, what made it better? My sister didn't even know the story after the film was over, but she thought it was one of the greatest films she'd ever seen based strictly on the body count. I happened to like the story m'self.

I resent Crowe now... just that fact that his stupid movies keep taking the awards.. (maybe not stupid.. but you know) and him taking best actor twice in a row... I mean Give someone else a chance! His performances are good, but he just bothers me to the core

Crowe was hot in Gladiator IMO... but do you know that there was a good number of gladiatrixes (women gladiators) in the teritorries of Old Roman Empire, they found a grave of one in England even and lots of others prooves all around the globe (off-topic but felt like sharing)
