View Full Version : Misheard LotR lines

Have you ever misheard what any of the characters say? Some times you couldn't understand them so your mind kind of makes up words to put in their mouth? I saw this on another forum once and it can be pretty funny sometimes! That is why I put it in the humor forum. (This covers both movies, by the way).
OK, I guess I should go first, even though mine aren't that funny:
In FotR when Pippin and Merry are sword fighting with Boromir just before the Crebain come, I though I head Merry say "You fart good, Pippin"! Though I know that's not what he says, that's what I heard the fist time I saw it!
My brother thought that Gandalf says "We must take the paths of Caradhras", when he really says "pass of Caradhras".
OK I may have more later if I can remember them. Hopefully you guys have some that are more funny.

i thought you look good pippen was 'not good, pippen'!
when i found out the real one i felt so dumb... i had just thought that merry was teasing him and pippen didnt notice ;)
oh yeah and 'looks like meats back on the menu boys' the first few times i watched ttt i thought he said 'looks like <name of orc he just killed>'s better than me boys!' lol which made no sense whatsoever

When Gandalf throws Sam on the table at Bag End, I thought he said, "What did you hear? SQUEAK!"
I started to laugh and was soon corrected by my sister who *did hear it correctly.

OK, I remembered some more:
When Faramir asks Sam if he is Frodo's body gaurd I though Sam said "his gaurdian"!
My brother thought Gimli called Aragorn "Manny" in TTT, when actually he said "Laddie"
Here's some more from my brother:
Saruman in FotR: "You shale taste vengence!"
When Gimli tells Legolas in TTT "Let him go, lad. Let him be" He didn't understand the first line and thought he was speaking Elvish! He thought he said "Un golad" or something like that! Then he thought the line after that was the translation!
OK, my sister thought Théoden said to Wormtongue: "Your leachcraft would have me walking on all fours like a beast!"
That's all I can remember right now.

lol! in norwegan when something sucks you say it is elendig and that sounds just like elendil so when Aragorn jumps down on the uruk-hai at the end of FotR and screams Elendil my friend thought he said "ELENDIG" hehe

On the extended DVD, when they are trying to figure out how to open the gates of Moria, Gandalf, after many fruitless attempts, plops himself down on a rock and says (at least it sounds like...) "Oh, Jesus!"
Had to play it over about 5 times before we realized he was actually saying "Oh, it's useless!"

Ok, here's one...When Theoden is being dressed and is giving his speech, does he say 'blowing' or 'cloven' about the horn. When i bought TTT game and got to the point where it has that clip i swear it said "where is the horn that was cloven". Then when i saw the film the first time i swear it said cloven again. The strange thing is when i saw it the second time a day or so later it said 'blowing'. I actually sat up and said "What the *bleep*?", Now did i just mishear a bunch of times or was it changed?
Aragorn:king:
Tar-Ancalimë
January 12th,2003, 11:17 PM
LOL i'm absolutely positive they changed it, just to annoy you ;)
(btw i've always heard blowing... they must not have changed it in my theater ;))

oh well... its a really neat line anyway, i like it regardless lo.
Wilwarin
January 14th,2003, 10:53 PM
OK, I remembered another one, though it's not very funny:
In the prologue I thought the first time that Galadriel said "but doom was near" when she really says "victory was near"! (Of course, it may have something to do with the fact that the theater I saw the first showing in had no stereo! It was like watching it on a big screen but hearing it from a TV!)

January 18th,2003, 05:19 AM
One line that I mishear everytime even now, from FotR is when Gandalf first arrives in Hobbiton and is asking Frodo about Bilbo. He says, "so, how is the old Rascal?". But I'm telling you if I hadn't watched it in caption and subtitles I could swear he says,"So, How is the old Bast**d?" Perhaps it's only me....;)

January 18th,2003, 04:56 PM

Polly Sandybanks
January 18th,2003, 05:34 PM
I'm pretty sure now that Theoden says "leechcraft". It was translated as leechcraft in the subtitles as well.
One thing though.. I still don't know the exact word that Sam says at the beginning, but to me it's always sounded like "what is that orange stink?" and that just doesn't seem right. lol
But since I don't know which word he's actually using, I always hear it like that.
Tar-Ancalimë
January 18th,2003, 05:45 PM
i think he says 'what's that 'orrid stink?' ...which makes sense lol
subtitles? subtitles? where are you getting subtitles?? lol
Elbereth
January 18th,2003, 08:13 PM
In FOTR Celborn says something along the lines of "eight there are here but nine set out from Rivendell" and I was so sure he was speaking in elvish!!! duh
Weirder still in the Battle at the beginning of FOTR we here Elrond shouting commands and thought I heard "Hold your lines" and "fire the arrows" but he was speaking elvish. Recently I found out that that is what he says!!! I was beginning to think I had seen too much LOTR and was cracking up slightly
Sorry if quotes aren't exact but I haven't rewatched FOTR for ages (but now have extended version!"!!!!!)
Polly Sandybanks
January 18th,2003, 08:21 PM
lol Yes.. 'orrid makes more sense. :)
And I know exactly what you mean Elbereth. There have been a number of times when I've watched Arwen and Aragorn talking and I've been so busy listening to what they were saying, and I was so sure that they were speaking english that it took me a while to realise that I didn't actually understand what they were saying lol. And by then the subtitles of it were gone already.
And I've also thought that I heard people say things and then I've realised that they were speaking elvish and weren't saying that at all. lol

January 18th,2003, 10:14 PM
I just saw TTT again yesterday and I remembered some lines that I had originally miss heard, but have since been enlightened.
Just before Treebeard takes Merry and Pippin to the Ent Moot I thought he said: "The ancient troubles of Elves and Men for a very long time." I thought that made no sense, but I was like "ok, what ever"!
This my brother heard wrong EVERY TIME until yesterday: Treebeard: "I told your limbs to the Ent Moot". I guess he thought that that was a phrase the Ents use or something, since they have limbs........??
My sister heard this: Gimli: "We Dwarves are natural sprinters, very dangerous in uncuth countries."
Oh, and on the topic of Elvish.......My brother thought that when Legolas says "They run as if the very whips of their masters were behind them" he was speaking in Elvish because he couldn't understand a word he said! He saw it three times thinking that, until one day he asked me what Legolas says in that scene (knowing that I know Sindairn he thought I could translate it for him, since there weren't any subtitles) I quoted the line for him and he said "oh, is that what he says?"
Wilwarin
January 18th,2003, 10:15 PM
Oh and by the way, Tar. I heard "It's the last thing he'll expect", so it must be you!
Polly Sandybanks
January 19th,2003, 11:22 AM
Yes.. Tar.. you're right. I thought he said "least" every time until yesterday when I saw it again and I heard very clearly that he said "last" and I thought "uhoo.. I'd better go home and change that sig". So that's what I'll do now. ;) lol

ok i think misheard lots of lines in FOTR because firstly i'm a Singaporean and I can't really understand their accent at times especially since I watched it on VCD and there are no subtitles... and secondly, I have a poor ear... haha...
so i made a blunder in the first part when frodo told gandalf "you're late" i heard "you're dead" (go on, laugh all you want...):jester:
I shall try to think of more misheard lines...

In the FOTR soundtrack, on the first track (about the 44 second mark) I hear 'I long to be there'... odd? Hmm...
On Track 13 "The Bridge of Khazad Dum"at the 3:14 mark, it really sounds like the male choir is singing "Who's got salami? Who's got salami?"

Speaking of Track 13 on the LOTR soudtrack "The Bridge of Khazad Dun," the part just before Aragorn (in the movie) tells Frodo to "Lean Forward," I swear the chorus is singing "Timber, Timber." Also, the first time I saw TTT and Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli are in Fangorn forest, and Aragorn says to Legolas "What do you see" in elvish, I thought he said "Bikini." But, maybe that's just me. ;)

Well Orlando might have been wearing one under his elf costume!
talking of soundtracks, in track 11 from TTT (I think its called the Leave Taking) when the music sounds a little bit like the music at the start of Many Meetings, listen to the singers. I think they sing Peredhil but I might be wrong. I often am :p

Ok, this was when I saw the movie the first time at the cinema - before I was hooked on LotR:

- Whenever Legolas was mentioned, I thought he was called "Leg -less"

< Legolas tosses weapons to Boromir and Aragorn to help blockade the door. Fellowship draws out their weapons Gimli leaps atop Balin's tomb and brandishes his axe >
Gimli: Aarrgghhh!!! Let them come! There is one dwarf yet in Moria that still draws breath!

Leechcraft is a name for the primitive medieval practices of doctors who used leeches to clean out "bad blood." Theoden is basically saying that Grima's help would have had him on all fours like a beast.

well, another one of my sisters was wondering what Pippin said when Gandalf told him to go back and get out of the fighting. Pippin says, "You called us out to fight." my sister thought he said, "The soldiers don't know how to fight."

lol Well I'm glad everyone's enjoying them!
Vani, I think that the movie was translated into Russian, and then translated back into English. And so that inbetween all the translating, the grammar, idioms, etc., got mixed up and these were the result.
I just love them! :p

Alright, I've got another one.
I always thought that in the beggining of RotK, Eowyn says, "My stew, Aragorn, ha!"
When she really says something in another language..........I still haven't figured it out. lol
I know it's slightly confusing, but it was funny.

Poor Eowyn!! Especially with her reputation with stew!!
She says, "Westu Aragorn, hal." Or something like that. It means, "Be thou, Aragorn, well."

roflmao Are you KIDDING me?? How dumb can those sub-titles people possibly be?? Not only have they badly mispelled it and missed key words, they don't even know elementary grammar!! lol Why couldn't they have just copied it from the script??
But anyway my personal favorite is one that I cannot repeat here lol but it was when Gimli was SUPPOSED to say "bring your pretty face to my axe"...however it turned out to be quite different lol This one is great too "You round to the ladies of the wood. You can't not go back." lol lol Those were two funny..I think my suitemates think I'm insane after seeing me crack up at my computer screen like that :p

November 10th,2004, 04:15 PM
I can't pick my favorite!!! They're all sooooo hilarious!!
Yeah, I know, why can't they just copy the script....maybe the way they said it was different, like the words were placed differently and so when it was translated back into English, it was all just messed up!
That's like what it is in my language, i.e....If I were to say, "Sakit ang akon chan/tian." If I were to translate it, it would be, "My stomach hurts." But a direct translation would be, "Hurt is my stomach." So maybe it was that way with the Engrish captions.
Lady Luthien
November 10th,2004, 05:59 PM
Yes, but...wasn't it originally written in English?
Heart-of-a-Hobbit
November 10th,2004, 10:06 PM
Yes, it was English. But it was translated into Russian, and (I suppose) shown in Russia. But then when someone went in and translated it back into English, it was just messed up. The grammar was different and words were switched aroud.

The lines I misheard was-
Gandalf in FOTR "There is only one Lord of the Ring. Only one ended to his will." erm - he wanted to die?
Boromir in FOTR "Make for the Gap of Rohan and take the worse road to my city!" So is it worse than being on this mountain while someone is trying to bring it down?

*giggles* yes, on my first viewing too, I misheard lots of lines!! But after watching the movie more, I did figure out what they were saying!

The first time I saw FOTR and TTT was on DVD - so I watched the films, someone would say somthing, and I'd think 'What???' but then remember I have subtitles! Ah, subtitles, what would I be putting in the Games thread 'For all movie memorizers' if I didn't have them. Well for one thing - Sauron WOULD like to die!

My dad is horrible with not understanding what people say. The first time we rented FotR was the first time he saw it. We were at the part just as Legolas shouts, "Crebain! From Dunland!" My dad just has to go and ruin the suspense with this:
"What? Rabbis from Dublin?"

Wow! I've got one!
This is not a misheard line in the movie, but a misheard conversation in real life.
This morning a colleague of mine said: "My husband was back from Congo yesterday".
What I heard was: "My husband was back from Gondor yesterday.

Yesterday when I read a English language astronomy album (I'm Chinese), I found Uranus has a moon named "Miranda". When the name still reminded me of Miranda Otto, I mistook a Saturn's moon "Mimas" for "Minas" (Tirith).

Just the other day me and my sister decided to watch all three movies, have a marathon of sorts, and at the part where Bilbo's giving his speech in FOTR my sister starts quoting him and she says 'beans Bilbo beans!' I mean I start cracking up roflmao. She didn't understand what I was laughing at for like the longest time and then I'm like they're saying 'speech Bilbo speech, not beans.' and then we had a laughing fest, it was great. :sigh: I love those moments :loveyou:

hehe...stupid non-fans....then again, I have no room to talk--I didn't read the books until after I saw TTT and my lil bro, who had read the 1st two, wouldn't tell me who "she" was. I was so annoyed at him. So I eventually picked up the Hobbit, and finished that by the next day, and started on FOTR. I think you all know where it goes from there. ;)

Well I too was in the process of reading the TTT when the TTT film came out but I hadn't gotten to the She part yet. So luckily my sister was kind enough to tell me that the she was a spider but I figured the rest out from the books. :)
