i would actually read the original books first to be honest, cos they were written first and they give you a better idea of Herberts original ideas.......but of them all the first book, "Dune" is def the best.........but wonderful books, full of intrigue and political manouevering......and a wonderfully realised world

I have read the first book of the serie (The Dune I mean) because all other aren't translate in estonia yet and I haven't found them in english too, but I have to say that it is one of the best book I ever read. I like it because the way it is written. Raerly you find someone who can write so intelligibly everything and make his toughts clear to others. It's just wonderful!

The first "Dune" novel is by far the best. The others in the series are well-written also. The prequels are quite good stories as well. "House Atreides" is really excellent.

and be warned they get pretty bleak........"Children of Dune" was bad enough....but they get even sadder and darker......"chapterhouse of dune" is a very tragic book........Herbert is true to the realities of politics.....the major one being that EVERYone is expendable.....

I have Dune I and II... I was never able to read them... started them many times... but all this look in the dictionary every two lines killed me... but even trying to ignore this I couldnt get involved what was happening.. tried reading from the middle even (helps with some books) no luck
Maybe the translation has spoiled the book or something... but I couldnt read it

I've read most of the 'Dune' book and find myself going through periods of reading several chapters followed by periods of weeks where I dont piuck it up again for awhile. I hope to finish the book soon, and I will move on to other authors. I cant say I wish to read mpre, but the first one is somewhat interesting.

I read Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune. First and Third were really excellent, but Dune Messiah didn't impress me much. I have not yet read God Emperor of Dune although I have the book. I hear it gets really weird.

Except for perhaps Duncan Idaho, the poor guy. :elfeek:
Frank Herbert is my favourite sci-fi author. In Dune he created an amazingly complicated, politically driven, unique world in sci-fi. His world is a strange combination of science and myth. The Fremen, and their society illustrate how even a broken people can unite and overthrow the repugnant House Harkonnen.
I have not read any of the prequels, but I did read "Butlerian Jihad" because I was interested in the background history of why machines were so hated in the Duneiverse, and I was disappointed to say the least. Brian really has no scope on his father, so I'm a bit hesitant to read the prequels. I also understand that there may be inconsistencies, but I could be wrong.
I highly recommend that you read the originals first, at least up until God Emperor of Dune.
My favourites in the series are; Dune, Chapterhouse, and God Emperor.
Edit: I forgot to ask: what are some of your favourite characters? Races? Groups?
My favourite character would probably be Duncan Idaho, or Murbella. I also liked Alia the Knife, and Leto of course.

I like Paul Atreides and the twins. Duncan Idaho was cool, too, as was Gurney.
As for races, I like the Fremen and how they adopted their life style to fit into the harshness of Dune.

favourite dune characters?..........hmmmm Duncan ofc...........he was such a complex character and yet at the same time, very simple......but my fave would have to be Alia......the ultimate in tragic heroines/villains.........it really wasnt her fault, any of what happened to her.......she just had to deal as best she could.........hardly a surprise she failed.........after all.......the twins only survived being preborn, because they had each other..........Alia had no such safety net.......so sad.........especially since without her, Paul would never have achieved his status on Arrakis.........she was the sacrificed pawn.
