My second favorite movie in the world is Moulin Rouge (After LOTR of course) And i wanted to see if any of you have seen it... None of you seem like the Romantic/Drama type... But I will watch just about anything... If you've seen it what did you think? Even if you didnt... why didnt you see it?
I think Ewan McGregor is my second favortie actor as well... he sings beautifully :loveyou:

I saw Moulin Rouge just beause I wanted to see what kind of costumes and set design beat FOTR. It was really good, and Ewan McGregor is AMAZING at singing. The costumes were pretty good...BUT WTF?! THE SET SUCKED COMPARED TO FOTR!!!

Wooohoo! Ewan has the best voice in the world! Who cares about the ****ty set.... Ewan is the main importance here ;) I have both soundtracks to Moulin Rouge and sing to them everyday with LOTR too....awwwwwww....Elijah and Ewan! I just realized I like guys with funky names starting with 'E'....

Bonos girl!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!!! (peeps don't realise just how obsessed she is!) ;)
I got Moulin Rouge on DVD and i watched it yesterday...i admit...i cried...but i cry a lot... :(
I thought the best bit was when the unconcious argentinian falls through the ceiling (lol) and the creepiest bit is when the duke is running after Ziddler (sp?) and they're singing about virgins...ahh!
:elfeek: lol :elfeek:

Nessa the Dancer
July 6th,2002, 01:32 PM
I liked the Roxanne song as well, and also the one all the actors sing to try and pursuade the Count or whatever he was to let them do the play.

I like Come What May... the movie version, and El Roxanne... and the Elephant Love Melody... does anyone have one of the soundtracks?
I'd have to say my favorite Part is... The part where she has to do you know what with the duke and Chrisitain is getting all jealous and they all break into song...(Roxanne) very powerful moment :) And the End makes me cry my eyes out everytimemecry mecry

I saw it in the cinema. My sister LOVES it, so she's got it on video and she has to watch it every now and then, so I've seen it a few times since she got it as well. :) It's really good. Ewan McGregor is always good, and so is Nicole Kidman. Both of them sing really well! :)

This is crazy!
Moulin Rouge is my fav. movie...next to LOTR:FOTR of course! A Walk to Remember's up there too. I love the song the do in the Elephant about 'Spectacular Spectacular'. It's so funny! I too cry every time I see the ending...I literally sob.
By the way, I'm new here and I can't believe there are other Pervy Hobbit Fanciers! What did you think of the diaries?

I don't want to go off topic here, ArwenLiz, so come on over to the PHF thread and we can talk about it! lol
Just to stay on topic: I like Moulin Rouge very much, as do I Ewan McGregor. Brilliant preformance and not much recognition. :(

I was there for opening day and five more times after that :D
So yes, I like it quite a bit. I've even just gone through a bit of a phase lately of listening to both soundtracks most all day long - especially good in the car when you can sing along at the top of your lungs, nevermind the strange looks other drivers may give you...
Favorite Song(s): Come What May, Roxanne, The Show Must Go On
The reason why sets may not be up to the snuff of New Zealand-amazing-beauty is it was filmed entirely within the Fox Studios Australia, not one shot outdoors. Just a certain visual style I think.

I love Moulin Rouge! Ewan is my favorite actor bwecause of his versitility, from Trainspotter to Star Wars to Moulin Rouge, the guy can do anything! Did anyone see him beside Orlando Bloom in Black Hawk Down? And they both spoke in American accents... hee hee! Loved it.
Moulin Rouge Dogma and FOTR are the three movies that I am obsessed with I could watch them everyday and never get bored!

Ewan is extremely versatile! (There are a few films he has been in....a few roles i think he may be wanting to erase from memory PRETTY soon! lol)

I guess I am the sole rebel. I did not like Moulin Rouge. Well I really liked the first half, but I walked out at the shooting scene. If they had kept up the fun pace from the first half, it could have been excellent, but turning it into a musical tragedy felt really unbalanced to me, and I felt abused. (Like being in an exstatic Love relationship and having it go sour right at it's height.)
(Plus I REALLY like Ewan better as Obi-Wan)
Pil
August 18th,2002, 09:24 PM
i agree that i preferred the beginning to the end half...the ending was lacking something...but i still thought the film was great...i don't think i've ever walked out of a film before... :nono: lol

Well, people do have different tastes. however, when Moulin Rogue first came out in the states, it was absolutely panned by both the critics and audiences alike. and it was only until that the film debuted in Europe that excitement and critical acclaim came in leaps and bounds.
or at least...thats what i remember ;)

I saw Moulin Rouge 2 days before I saw LOTR (Got it for christmas) and I was obsessed and watched it 4 times in those 2 days. After I saw LOTR, I have to admit I wasn't obsessed until the 3rd time I went mecry
But might I add that I LOVE sad endings..... not that I like being sad, or that I enjoy the endings, but when its sad than I feel the movie has achieved its goal by getting my emotions to run away with me. Like LOTR!... I wouldn't ever change the ending to LOTR, even though it hurts to think about the end mecry as well as Moulin Rouge

Alright, Moulin Rouge is completely and utterly my most favorite of all Baz Lurhman films this year! And I own the DVD, both soundtracks and a partridge in a pear tree. I adore the whole thing but my most favorite and yet the worst part to endure is Christian's wail as he holds Satine once she finally dies. Makes me sick with tears!!! I hate to see strong men crying!! Anyways, I'm sad to hear so many people disliked it but to each his own! I say, to all of you" How wonderful life is, now you're in the world......" ;) :)

Personally, I liked it. Of course my Mom had to complain about the fact that the movie took place in what? 1821 (I can't remember now)? And they had music from the 50's in there. Of course, she's seen the acctual Moulon Rouge, as in the place in France. go figure. I liked it though you're right, I'm not a romantic/comedy type. I;m more into Horror/comedy (occasionally) and LotR, which is it's own catagory. I also like James Bond. Seen almost every one of his. Later!

must admit tho, i WAS surprised that Ewan sings so well.....as to original.........when made?.....
oh and bit of boring pedantry here ;)......the Moulin Rouge (or Red Mill) is a Parisian niteclub famous for several things........being the hang out of impressionist artist Toulouse Lautrec, and the subject of many of his paintings.........being the inventor of the cancan.........and having hosted the (in)famous chantuese Dorothy Dandridge among many others....

tsk, tsk, too here Ronin! I do believe you are underrating the genius behind Baz's intentional 70's,80's, and 90's music laced film. I have not seen the original yet but I have heard about it recently and I don't doubt it is good. However, Baz has a maniacal and unconventional way of seeing stories and I don't think MTV has anything to do with it! Think of the beauty of the lyrics, could they be plainly put into a script and not sound ridiculous? Or plagiarizing for that matter. Silly boy, Poetic Justice!! You must use your justifiable lyrical appreciation of words here! But you are probably right, Moulin Rouge (2001) is likely far different from the first...but perhaps no less better or worse....But don't take this personal, I just wonder why you are so Anti MTV? ;) ;) ;) :)

Well, i hadn't seen MR until last night. I tried not to pre judge it and I don't believe i can ever give an accurate assessment of anything until i've watched it all the way through. So, as i say, last night, i did.... and honestly... I was bored rigid after 10 minutes. Sorry, but for me, it did absolutely nothing. It just grated on me. I mean... the main storyline was ok but thin... but to pad it out with modern rock and pop songs... eeewwww. MTV obliterated... well, yeah, i have to agree with that. Just not my kind of thing. Its a shame.. because i LOVED Luhrman's R+J.

Everybody kept telling me to watch Moulin Rouge, and so I did some months ago. All the stuff around was fab, the clothes for example were stunning. But the best part was in the beginning, when that narcolepic gypsy fell through Ewans ceiling. The rest was...well to lift an eyebrow and wonder why everyone loves it so much. And I'm not complaining about the music, I normaly find anacronisme funny...at least when it's not so obvious!:p

Hey bonos-girl, you said you got Moulin Rouge! with Romeo & Juliet. Was it the boxed set ~ The Red Curtain Trilogy ~ that also includes Strictly Ballroom? Because if you did, a little bit of trivia for you is that the actor who plays the father of Scott Hastings in Strictly Ballroom is actually Miranda Otto's (Eowyn in the movies) father irl.

I'll put it on my list of movies to see...the local videoshop's selection isn't what you would call plentyful, but I know the owner well enough to ask if he will order in something on request. He's actually likely to do that, oh that would be grand! I'm on holiday, x-mas spirit creeping in!

Everybody else in here has a list of they're fav films, I'e been asleep for the past 4 years so unfortunatly I don't have that! Instead I have this "to see" list, which grows longer by the minute I spend in here! Well at least I know what to do in my long holiday...!roflmao

I have seen it and I liked (I liked almost all films which aren't comedys... ) but I don't say it is one of the best. It was funny, little bite but the songs  They are just briliant.. I listen them very offen and I like them...especially The Show Must Go on and Elephant Medley

Ladies, ladies... as interesting as some of you may find Ronin's squirming, singing (if you can call it that ;)... we'd all need industrial size earplugs if he started!!!) and footwear:rolleyes: .... I do believe we're talking about Moulin Rouge.
It irritated me beyond belief... the constant use of modern songs... in what was a movie with a very thin plot... and yeah, if you're going to use those types of songs... use the originals... not just actors singing them badly.
It was awful sitting there waiting... knowing that the next golden oldie was just round the corner... or reel.pfbbt

Catz
January 14th,2003, 01:01 PM
ummm no......i think you can give a fair opinion on something if you couldnt watch it too......if only that it totally failed to engage one....which is how i felt about it.........it was an old plot and old songs........pretty costumes cant change that....and i found it dull........but then ive never been keen on romances
oh and well done for remembering the topic kiddies ;) lol
:catz:

rather shameful  lol
Ilmarë
January 16th,2003, 12:56 PM
*looks completely relieved*.... lovely voice???? ...hmmm.... not when singing u don't. Count this as a narrow escape, girls;) lol
Now.. back to Moulin Rouge!
Lintefaniel
January 17th,2003, 09:05 AM
Yes, lets get back to Moulin Rouge. Why do people not like this movie do you suppose? I know why I like it but i don't understand why someone would not like it. I ask this in complete innocence folks so please be gentle....;)
Cuiel Rilwen
January 17th,2003, 04:23 PM
Actually its more being bored with it than disliking it. Or even careless...it didn't do anything for me.
Adunauriel
January 17th,2003, 08:14 PM
I also find it doesn't keep my attention... Don't get me wrong, I now own it, so I may watch it whenever I feel up to it... It's just that, well atleast for me.. It's just a little too sad at some points. I like sad movies, but in moderation....;) :)
Lintefaniel
January 18th,2003, 06:36 AM
How so? For me it's intensely passionate and I breathe passion so I dig that sort of thing...explain...( remember all basic curious questions)....Anyone can input......
Catz
January 18th,2003, 09:17 AM
well see thats the thing really........i love passion in a movie.......i just dont think this had any.........it just didnt engage me at all......thats why ive never been able to sit right thru it
normally anachronisms dont bother me in a film.........IF theyre treated in such a way as to not interfere with the willing suspension of disbelief of the viewer........but in this.......they not only dont do that.........they practically shove the anachronisms under your nose and shout "arent we clever" lol
just too much glitz and not enough story.....a good movie would have taken that story and gone somehwere new with it.......not just dressed it up.......but thats just my opinion.......and as i say ive not ever seen it right thru lol
:catz:
Adunauriel
January 18th,2003, 09:14 PM

Lintefaniel
January 19th,2003, 03:41 AM
I see, passions on many different levels! I understand that better now...thanks guys...;)
Ronin
January 19th,2003, 06:01 PM
to me, its like a huge, MTV-produced music video....with clever little twists and turns...and the most pathetic sound track i've heard in years.
i agree with catz - i love passion in movies, in anything really, and will go out of my way (she'll affirm that) to find that passion to really involve myself in the movie. couldn't do it here...because there was "nothing" to be passionate about.
too much glitz...too little soul
Lintefaniel
January 20th,2003, 11:32 AM
Like I said, we each saw passions on different levels....or rather in different ways....But not to worry I understand it now!! All is well in my little sheltered world of make believe and passion filled romantic notions of fantasy and desire.....which will hopefully not pass me by!! ;) Just teasing....
Bonos-Girl
January 20th,2003, 01:51 PM

Well I can't say that helped, but now I at least know his characters name ...so can someone now chain me up to prevent me from renting this movie again, which really didn't do anything for me, just to see Wenham's, (probably tiny), part!

Well, in my post I did describe David's Audrey character as looking kinda "adrogenous" He doesn't look male really and
he makes a funny looking female.... the bohemians decide that
Ewan's character should write the play and David's character leaves in a huff.
that's the best I can do at describing him.

well i gotta say Ronins not the only one whose less than impressed with Moulin Rouge.....apart from the fact that i think the plot was hackneyed, the use of modern music just jarred intensely.............it bugged me that it was nominated for the Oscars too......cos it really wasnt an original piece........just a lot of rehashes strung together.......music and plot, with glitz to cover the cracks
thats just my opinion mind.......but its really not my idea of a great film;)

I meant...whilst sitting...lol... I most certainly wish I needed little cushioning...but alas...puberty was cruel to my thighs (and backside and hips lol) Anyway...back to the beauty of Moulin Rouge....I loved the MTV aspect of it!! It is why I loved it. It's so absolutely ridiculous that it fits...Kinda like the Woody Allen Flick...Everyone Says I Love You...NO ONE EXPECTS IT!!! Good grief...it's feel good flick...it's cookies and milk kinda of Sitting in your jammies with your hair undone kind of film!!
