View Full Version : Question On The Length Of The Rotk

Considering what they didn't get to in TTT and what they NEED to do in the Return of the King, this will be one long movie. I heard somewhere that it might be split into two parts! :elfeek: Can anyone confirm that?

no but i can deny that... its a rather odd assertion, because there's no way they would do that

PJ has said that Rotk will probably be about 3 and half hours or as long as it is needed. ;)

yes yes but im taking that with a grain of salt. the amount of complaints they get with a three hour long movie! plus the showings would be too far apart. a 3.5 hour movie couldnt work, financially

I think a 3 and a half hour movie would work pretty well - look at the takings for TTT so far. The films have garnered a huge following of books fans and general movie goers - I'm sure most people who watched the first 2 will want to see how it ends and so wouldn't mind being there for another half hour as long as it reaches a logical conclusion. I reackon New Line will let PJ go on for a bit longer than the first 2 films - its a sure thing to make money now, unlike the first one which could have bombed.

I'd agree with Daisy here. Even if I didn't read the books I wouldn't mine seeing the movie 3 1/2 hours long, as long as it develops well leading to the conclusion.

the thing about each of the LOTR movies is that yes it is 3 hours long. but neither of the movies felt 3 hours long, the plot moves quickly and there are great visuals and battle scenes... the ROTK i suspect will live up to the precedent set by the two previous films. and any way most of the people who will go to the ROTK have already seen the FOTR and TTT, i don't think the extra 1/2 an hour makes much difference as long as they find out how it ends :)

Here's what Harry at Aint it Cool News has to say:
From what I'm hearing there are 3 initial edits for Peter to begin looking at. A 3 hour cut, a 3 and a half hour cut and a 4 and a half hour cut. The version that was screened to Elijah, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan was the 3 hour cut. Word has it that tears flowed beginning 40 minutes in and that this is THE film of the trilogy. For those that know the material that is left to cover, I bet you can imagine what the scene is...
oh - excitement is brewing and its still months away!!

Personally i'd like to see the 4 and 1/2 hours one!!! That would be soooo awesome!!!! But to start i can settle for the one 3 and 1/2 hrs. I think that'll be the choice, since there's so much to cover, and if i were directing i wouldn't want to leave anything of that out. Plus, i don't think there'll be three versions, just the two longer ones.

maybe they should release all versions and then people could choose which one they'd want to see!!!

4 1/2 hours I hope that an Intermission will be built into the film lol so I have the chance to run and use the potty.

i think that they should release the 4 1/2 version to theaters who can show it for a week so hardcore fan's (or who ever wants to) can see it

I reackon that the theatre release will be about 3 1/2 hrs, so the SEE could be 4 1/2 hrs - that'd be cool. I read somewhere that the bloopers from filming may turn up on a DVD so hopefully that'd be a good extra

I think it will be 3 1/2 hours long as well... I know I am going to like RotK the best! I always liked that part of the book the best, and I always will. I am going to cry every time I see Frodo and Sam on the screen, because it is all suffering the entire way. Even after the journey is over....
Ahhhhh! I hope that the extended version of RotK will be the 4 1/2 hour cut. I hear that after they will be including bloopers and TONS and TONS of extra stuff by the time the movies have been released
EDIT: Oops, sorry Daisy I just realized I repeated what you said... roflmao

I wonder, if it was much longer than 3 hrs, if the cinemas would worry they are losing money (even though ROTK will bring in packets): 1. because if was too much longer they might be forced into including an intermission (which would make the session even longer); 2. Such a long session takes time away from other screenings and by that I mean they might have to reduce the number of ROTK showings per day and they are used to making more money from a block of time (i.e., they could pretty much show two shorter films double the $$ for the same time). Personally I say ditch all the crappy ads (okay I know they also make from them) and wasted time at the beginning before the movie starts (like all the time you sit there after the doors open and there nothing on ..not even ads...) get rid of that and make the movie longer!

:hooray: here, here - who wants to sit in a cinema and watch a blank screen or even as our cinema does, have pictionary clues on screen. If i wanted to play pictionary, I would've stayed at home but I've come to the cinema to watch a film so get on with it!!!
(on a side note, went to watch TTT the other night, and they left the lights on through the whole beginning sequence - kinda spoils the effect of the Balrogverymad Quite a few people got up to point it out, but it still took 5 mins or so before they dimmed the lights)

oh that happened when i went to see Two Weeks Notice. But i'd be wicked mad if that happened during LotR!!
~Well, back on topic~ I really dont care how long it is as long as they have alll the good/important scenes in there (which is like... EVERYTHING! lol ) but 4 1/2 hour Extended Cut would be AWESOME! I got my mom into LotR and she said that when the last movie comes out we'll have to have a LotR day and watch all the movies consecutively - i'm thinking we'll have to get up PRETTY... EARLY! to finish before midnight ;)

Well, I am looking forward to the extended version of TTT. I am sure that PJ will follow along with what he did with FOTR. Thus, the movie version will be released in June and the extended version in November. And, with extended scenes and new scenes added, a few missing pieces will help round out TTT to fall more into line with the book.
The fact is, PJ's LOTR is a filmed adaption of the books. It's not possible to include everything. Yes, disappointing that Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, the Barrow-wight didn't make it into FOTR. But, as the screenwriters said, they didn't want the film to be rebundant. To have filmed all Frodo's obstacles and overcoming those obstacles - before he even got to the Prancing Pony - would have been rebundant. They chose instead to focus on the most obvious obstacle - the Black Riders.
So, there are going to be things missing - whole pieces missing that were in the book, e.g, Tom Bombadil. However, the main themes of the book will remain - good vs evil, temptation, faith, and redemption.

i live in australia, so i dont know if its the same anywhere else, and volunteered at a local cinema, and i found out that the film companies don't allow breaks in movies, because it takes away the atmosphere of the movie. this makes sense, the people who want a break in the movie should just watch it on dvd or video so they can stop it when ever and the people who really really want to see the whole movie together can go to the cinema and get the whole atmosphere.

Yeah - they stopped having intermissions here about 10 years ago. I've heard stories about people who've been to see LOTR -many times, and yet to see the whole movie. The reason? They kept galloping outside for a cigarette.

When you're talking about Lord of the Rings, I don't think the length would be a financial problem ;)
Besides, I've always wondered why PJ and the Gang haven't used old fashioned Intermission for the movies. That would be great.
