View Full Version : solo cinema-going

Since moving to OZ, I haven't yet established my social circle as it was in England - I know people, but I would say at the moment they are just acquaintances, who may or may not turn out to be good friends....anyway my point being, is that I don't really have anyone to go to the cinema with....I've been debating (in my head - theres a party going on up there) whether to go it alone.....So does anyone else go alone occasionally? Whats it like? Do people stare? Whens the best time to go alone? Will people take me for a freak who'll probably end up alone in an apartment being eaten by alsatians? (As you can tell I'm slightly neurotic about being alone, which explains why more than a few friends, heck even my mum, have compared me to a Bridget Jones in training, including the excesssive chardonnay drinking.....although I'm still abstaining from xmas...or at least trying to;) )

Ok enough prattling on.... so to go solo or not at all?

i almost ALWAYS go to the movies alone.....i very much prefer it that way.......sure its nice to go with a special someone, but since i dont have a significant other here at the mo.......i go alone
but then i like being alone and ive never given a toss what people think lol
theres no way id let what anyone else thought stop me from doing something i love......and i go at all times of the day and nite........tho usually at nite

Best thing about seeing the movie alone is that if you decide to see it again you dont have put it up to a vote, that and you have more money for food.:)

lol i never eat in the movies.......but it does mean that i dont have to behave.........heheh so if anyone is being ignorant in the showing im at i feel no compunction about telling them to shut up lol
fair warning......do NOT talk thru any movie that im at........IF you value your skin ;) lol

I've never been alone to see a movie, as I feel it's a little dull, if you see a comedy you'll have someone to laugh with. But for TTT, I would prefer to go alone, so I wouldn't have to keep explaining stuff to my friends, who feel that reading the book will make them a 'freak' . ;)

No one would stare... going to movies alone is normal. I have never done it yet... My first time will be when I go to see The Recruit, but I am not scared in the least. You can attention better alone too.

Go for it Daisy. I go alone and with my friends on occasion ... there's absolutley nothing wrong with it.... I love movies and nothing or nobody will stop me from going to see them.

Thinking back I've actually never been alone at the cinema! I guess its nice to have someone with you before going in and during commercials...I have a friend with whom I always "share" commercials, we take turns and the comments can be rather hilarious sometimes...but when the movie starts its really only in comedies I feel the need to have someone with me. A good film will consume me anyway. I have another cinema- friend at work, who hates to go alone, but maybe I should try that...for once I'll just not tell him! How about it, Daisy, we make a pact and come back here to tell how it felt?

Oh and I have to have pop- corn and licorice...the soft and sweet kind. And a coke.

Sure. It's no problem. You can get used to it. No one there who is a stranger cares whether you are alone or even gives you a second thought.
I already dragged as many friends as I could the first two times, so now I have to go alone to see TTT, as no one else I know is thrilled about seeing the same movie over and over.
I even have one particular regular movie-addict buddy, who won't see it again with me - but then I wouldn't go with him either, those extra four times he went to see 'Independence Day' or 'Armaggedon'. lol
Of course, I only go at the cheap afternoon hour movies when the cost is less than a Frappucino.

Its the rare occassion that i go to see a movie with someone, used to go regularly with my parents...but not much since. i don't really have someone i'd truly enjoy the experience, so i'll go alone. going with friends is cool...but i view most movies to the same degree as viewing a painting (if there is merit) and someone munching and laughing, talking really ticks me off...and thats most friends, so a no go ;) lol

Catz
January 9th,2003, 11:44 PM
oh god yeah......thats so true..........last thing i want when im trying to concentrate or worse, when ive been taken away by a movie, is to brought abruptly back to the here and now by a comment or a someone chowing down.........that REALLY steams meverymad .......so i guess going alone for me is protection for my friends too roflmao

Ditto that!. When I am absorbed into a movie I really really dislike verymad being dragged back into reality by inconsiderate people who don't care that they're disturbing people by chatting on their mobile, rustling around in their foil chip packet for that last little crumb at the bottom that takes them, you know, like half an hour to find! GRRRRRRRRRR.
My friends and family that I go with also hate it so that's usually not a prob.

Anyway, Daisy I sometimes go with friends I sometimes go without. I don't believe that I should be prevented from doing something I want to do because none of my friends want to, are interested, have the time or money to go. I have really broad interests that not all my friends all share. Many of my friends are students and can't always afford to spend money on the same movies etc.I love film and i tend to watch a variety of things that not all my friends are interested in.
On the ocassion when I do go on my own I usually go during the day. I guess I'd be more conscious of going on my own at night (though to be honest I'm sure noone would notice or pay it much attention, I rarely do ....I only really notice obnoxious people ;) ). And actually when I want to spend time (I mean quality time) with friends I'd prefer not to go to the movies but rather do to the pub or a bar or coffee shop or restaurant etc where you can actually talk and interact. While you're sharing a movie experience together you can't really talk for all that time so its not exactly qualiity time. but then there are times I like to come out of a movie and talk about it (I'm usually good at guessingg which I'll want to talk about after). Very occasionally I'll see a movie more than once (e.g., FOTR and TTT) and my friends prefer to see something with someone who hasn't seen it already ...so when I saw TTT for the 3rd time I went on my own lol

So sometimes I go to the movies with friends, sometimes I go solo.
Enjoy the things you like doing DaisyG. Don't let anythign stop you!

Cellphones in cinemas = capital sin! Don't you just wanna stick in down their throats!

Its feels real nice to have someone to disguss with afterwards...or just rant over it with! After I saw TTT the first time, I went to a pub with my company, and we were just bursting to talk it over! Think we weren't home till 02:30 that night, and I still wasn't tired! Ofcourse, they feel the same way as me about chatting while the film is playing.

i go alone sometimes... like when i want to see a movie no one else wants to go see... or if i just need to unwind and get away you know? it's so great. no one really stares either... but i like to go bright and early in the morning before noon, cuz there are far less people.
as for the interactions after the movie... those kick ace but i don't need them... i have a movie column in the school news paper so i can just write about it... it's the in movie conversations that i love :) it's not that i talk really loudly, but i like wispering snide comments to the person next to me... but i do that only if the movie is bad... like Star Trek Nemisis... good god that movie sucked... but any way, sure go to the cinema alone it's all good

Thats excactly the case...if the movie doesn't speak t me, I feel the need to speak myself!roflmao I don't speak out loud no matter what, but it is actually so, the good ones takes me in and shuts me up, the bad ones bores me so my mind wanders and I speak!

Have to say i agree, while during most movies everything distracts me, talking or what not...but its those special occassions, whether with friends or just the worthless piece of movie, its great to sit back and just tear the film apart.

Have to agree on that. I'd love Cinema's to include a food free session...ooo I'd love that. Though they never will they'd lose too much money. Why, if noise during the movie buggs so many people, do others do it? I guess its only a few out of a few hundred.

I've never walked out on anything (I even sat through Slipstream lol ) though I have been tempted to by something recently ... just can't remember what it was...maybe The Avengers ???

ach, thats why I don't bother with first dates at the flicks - prefer something like ice skating or bowling - where you can make a fool of yourself and talk as much as you want - save the flicks for when its more of a relationship.

I hate sweet rustlers - its so annoying - thats why I rarely eat snacks and if I do its a cup of popcorn, which as soon as you get near the bottom(when it starts getting rustly) I leave it. I went with my parents to watch TTT the first time (kind of a tradition in our family where we go watch the major pics, like LOTR and Star Wars together), anyway, the first scene of TTT, where the camera is flying over the mountains, and then you start hearing the voices of the Fellowship, my mum goes "oh we'll have to get the soundtrack, its really good" verymad aargh mother - what were you thinking!! I just turned and glared at her.

Anyway, I've been thinking I may go and watch Catch me if you Can, on Sat morning, although I may be going travelling so I need to save me pennies. Cheers for the advice tho;)

I normally go to the cinema on my own, it feels all comfy and elitist in a mysterious film-critic kind of way. I like going in the afternoon when I know the cinema will be deserted so that I don't have to put up with the aforementioned issues.

When I find a movie I want to see over and over I normally try to drag someone along with me to spread the love, and have someone to rant with. It's quite creepy though, my mum seems to get into the strangest movies, I dragged her along to TTT saturday, her reactions were really funny, and there was only 1 "what's-going-on" moment.

Gatsby
January 13th,2003, 08:01 PM
yeah i know... i try and drag as many people to the LOTr as possible... they can't die not knowing how great it is! and i get this great knowledgable feeling when they ask questions about whats going on, cuz i get to explain and i love explaining LOTR to non-readers :) i know it's a shameless ego boost but i don't care

that is why I always leave the last few mouthfuls so I'm not guilty of such atrocities!
Mobile phones and groups of little kids who don't sit still or shut up - if your kids' gonna get scared at a movies - don't take him!! I was next to one such kid at Harry Potter (poor thing was only about 4) and he spent most of the film squirming in his seat.

yeah you have to wonder about the mental capabilities of some parents dont you?
i was at one nite time showing of fellowship that was totally destroyed by a 5 or 6 year old kid who didnt sit down or shut up for the whole damn movie........cant blame the kid.....a child of that age does not have a three hour attention span...........heheh i cornered the parents after and suggested very politely that they not ever come to another movie theatre with me in it lol

I think parents who don't know how to discipline their own kids get arngry when someone else does. We have friends who have a hyper 6 year old - he gets no discipline at home and is allowed to do what he wants, my dad though will not let him misbehave in our house so if he's doing something naughty my dad will tell him off, and he stops - his parents don't like that as if they tell him off, he doesn't listen.

I love going to the cinema on my own. It feels kind of decadent - just something I'm doing for me. It's great so i wouldn't worry about what other people might think. Friends is good too - but unless they're people i see very often i'd rather spend my time with my friends focused on my friends. You know when i'm with them i'd rather talk to them than sit next to them in silence watching a movie. Particularly those of my friends who chatter in cinemas - flogging is too good for them!
