"In days of old, my people stood beside the King of Gondor - we come to honor that allegiance" - Haldir of Lorien

The Last Fair Warrior

He knows he must be here;
fealty calls him.
He has left the golden, fading forest lying far behind-
yet ever in his heart.
He has come to defend his Lady; his world...
and that which lies beyond forever.
As the last fair warrior draws his sword and strings his bow
he'll never know
what might have waited there for him
upon that woodland path not tread.
Instead, encroaching fear and darkness faced;
held, for a time, at bay - by a brother's glad greeting,
or by a friend's warm embrace:
The light within his face
waxes bright and strong as darkness approaches.....
~~~~~
At last, with cries of rage they come......and come...
With ringing echo there, first clash!
the warrior presses on.
In heat of battle swift and sure his strokes they fall -
as do his brethren, felled from eternity
to lie upon the earth in silence deep....and all too soon,
this last fair warrior falls...
The lights of Elbereth within his face are dimmed,
yet wait: the Kindler comes!
She will not suffer the loss of these fair ones-
Iluvatar cannot forsake his Children now!
One searing moment, swiftly passing, then
all pain is gone - the din of battle fades.
The warrior rises up amongst his kin,
their progress hidden from the sight of Men...
Clad in shimmering gossamer they in wonder tread
with silent feet upon the starlit stair;
Tintalle's starlight fades as another light grows;
the wanderers approach their journey's end.
Exquisite brightness - there within the Secret Fire
waits Iluvatar to welcome his Children Home!
You are gracious, fair Lady! How kind of you to find compliments even though you are not fond of the subject! I too, did not have much good to say about Haldir...until I saw that death scene; I was amazed at how he seemed to convey the death of an immortal; it moved me to write an ending of hope.
BTW...may I ask you for a translation of 'Nanye taura tari Numenoro'? And is it Quenya or some other tongue?
Namarie tenna enomentielva,
(Farewell until we meet again)
I really like that, especially the last bit.
The way you move from the battle scene to Haldir going Home.
Very well done.
Again, hantale, Nessa!
In those lines you mention, I was trying to capture just how swiftly that moment may come; the 'passing of the bar' if you will.
I'm happy that you enjoyed the poem!
