I'm just thinking that there are lots of names in middle earth history and all of them seem to be great and original for example the fire rooms in Mount Doom,Sammath Naur,Osgiliath,Gondor,Elessar...
So what's your favourite?? (including Silmarillion,Hobbit and Lotr)

Hmmm yes lots of good names. I like Rauros, Arnor, oh and the one I always spell worng nargathrond.........tons more. Tolkien had a knack with names. Hey you know Smaug was a pun of sorts..........from old german meaning to fit into small hole or something. hehe

You know ... since much of the Quenya and Sindarin come from the Finnish language ... I wonder if there exists a bunch of Elvish named children in Finland ... hahaha.

But seriously, you are correct ... the naming is elegant. The words just flow from your lips (if you are pronouncing them correctly).

I like saying "Emyn Muil", "Ossiriand" (both Sindarin), and all the Quenya words that end with "ë" like Finwë, Olwë, and Eldalië.

Something else I've often wondered ... everyone wants to talk about Quenya but it's Sindarin that everyone knows. It seems that most of the Quenya names were replaced with the Sindarin versions in the 3rd Age. Orodruin, Minas Tirith, Imladris ... these are all Grey-elven words.

Bonos-Girl
July 11th,2002, 06:41 PM
bilbo sounds way too much like an object which i'm not going to mention here......most of you can probably guess what i'm talking about but........if not read bored of the rings...or ask someone.....

But that's not a name! TOPIC PEOPLE TOPIC! (trying to redeem myself, not be hypocritical!) :p

Another name i like is rauros. Sounds like taurus...but anyway, it's different from the other names, but i think it fits in quite nicely. :)

Narloth

<rant>Personally, I really like the names Feanor, Luthien and Smeagol, but I like them all. What bugs me is when people mispronounce them, aspecially when they don't even try. i.e. when people pronounce my Elvish name the way they would an ordinary word: in the back of their throats! *scowl* The Elvish is spoken on the tip of the tongue, people! </rant>

It's impossible for me to chose, there are so many names, and they seem to be so natural and fluid.

From the top of my mind, Ulmo, Legolas and Silmarillion are the best names.

TheRingBearer
August 9th,2002, 05:50 PM
I like the word Hobbit. Just hearing it gives you a sense of something small but loyal and trustworthy.

HobbitFriend
August 9th,2002, 06:33 PM
me too! (like the word Hobbit) i just love the sound of it (well i also like them too :grin: ) although, i don't exactly think that counts as a "name" ... well, it could - it's the name of their race :huh:

Undomiel
August 10th,2002, 09:25 PM
I like loads but some of my faves are:

"mithril" "Ithilien" "Argonath" "Minas Tirith" "Narsil" "Anduril" "Elessar" etc etc... there are way too many. Oh one other, I really like the pronunciation of "Théoden"

Dernhelm
August 14th,2002, 02:15 AM
lol Ok, I confess - the name that makes my heart go pitter-patter is "Prince Imrahil". I dunno what it is about that name, but I so dig it.

Nessa
August 14th,2002, 02:19 AM
Imrahil.... Yes, I like it! (Although its not just the name that makes my heart 'go pitter-patter.')

I also like Isildur, the name just rolls off the tongue... Isildur Isildur... fun stuff! :grin:

Dernhelm

I still think "Ulmo" is the best name. It's deep, simple and leaves a clear impression, while some other names can be confusing and easily forgoten.

I love all the names! I was so excited when I first saw all the meanings of the different prefixes and endings to all the words and saw everything was named exactly what they were. I think Mordor was the first thing I ever saw the meaning for. 'mor-' dark and 'dor' - land. I loved finding the meanings for everything. But the names are all very beautiful and wonderful.

Galadriel, it's just so pretty! I like Elessar and Elfstone, because I just think Elfstone sounds cool. I also like a lot of the names of the Valor, especially Varda Elentari.

Pil
August 14th,2002, 01:54 PM

Ugh...I hate how his name is pronounced in the film. I prefer "Le-go-lus" not "Lay-go-lahs". That is a result of having read FOTR before seeing it. :grin: :read: I still hold to my version. :grin:

But as for my fave name...I love all the names. They're so pretty. (Master Tolkien was a genius.) Galandriel and Lothlorien are especially beautiful...wouldn't those make wonderful names for a girl?

Daughter of Finarfin
August 17th,2002, 04:24 AM
I wish MY parents had named ME Galadriel! *Stops and looks at name* oh wait... *
I also like the meaning of some of the names. Galadriel "Radiant Garland" and Gil-Glad "Star of Radiance" are just beautiful sounding in both translations. Legolas Greenleaf just seems to fit our Legsy.

Lady Ashley
August 17th,2002, 06:54 AM
If I'm still into LOTR by the time I get married and have a daughter, I'd like to name her Lothlorien. And yeah, Legolas's name fits him just fine! after all it means "green leaf" and he's a Wood-elf. Perfect name for him.

"Bracegirdle from Harbottle";
Thangorodrim--grim place;
Ar-Pharazon (now, there's an arrogant name!);
Aqualonde--sounds like a beautiful seaside resort;

I love the name Feanor - 'spirit of fire' (sums him up when you consider that when he died his spirit was so fiery, it sped from his body, reducing it to ashes)
The prize for having most groovy names has to go to Aragorn, Elessar, Telcontar, Strider, Thorongil, (I could go on??)
Also the names Meriadoc and Glorfindel... ooh and Maedhros (just rolls off the tongue!) Let's not forget Luthien Tinuviel! And Gil-galad - 'Star of Radiance'... and Fingolfin... OH!! AND Beleg Cuthalion!

ok...I'll stop now...
