Here is another poem inspired by a picture from my FotR day calendar. The picture is of a row of Elf warriors in the Last Alliance, just before they are atacked by a billion Orcs (I'm sure you've seen it before).
"Elves and Death"
Battle was before them,
Yet no soldier feared the fight.
Though in the forth ensuing mayhem
Each knew that he might die.
The warriors, tall and Elven-fair,
Had all seen death before;
Men who were killed by sword or snare
Over a thousand years or more.
Death was real to the race of men,
They seemed to be born to die;
To live short lives and then to end,
Leaving loved ones behind to cry.
Yet no Elven mind could grasp it,
No immortal heart could tell
The thoughts of a dying soldier,
As he in the battle fell.
