Has anyone read the 'Gormenghast' trilogy by Mervyn Peake? I have so far read 'Titus Groan', last October, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole atmosphere is in a style which I Iove.

These books are so hard to find now !!! I've tried...
I've been looking for a copy for awhile.
I watched and own the movie though... I thought Christopher Lee was great as Flay.
Christopher Lee has met Tolkein and Peake

The BBC version was what introduced me to the books. Christopher Lee was absolutely wonderful as Flay, as was Richard Griffiths as Swelter.

Ah yeah I forgot about Richard Griffiths...he was in Harry Potter..
I recognized him right away by his off center eyes. :)

Keep on trying. The books have been reliably in print for donkey's years so you should be able to pick up a copy from somewhere. Failing that, I'm sure Amazon can help you out :-)

*cough* *cough*
I remember reading them for the first time when I was a teen, and they had a big impact on me.

Folio Society prints a gorgeous edition of Gormenghast. I am at the first quarter of the second volume: I only read it when in a "****y" mood - because it effects my mood and makes it "****y": rather dark, black humor abounds, and satire drips from every page, tho cloaked in an excellent writing style for such mood-setting. I highly recommend it thus far.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what Gormenghast is?

Gormenghast: originally predated even TLOTR rings, being first printed in 1950. It also is a trilogy, about the same length as TLOTR, but (wow!) is this story ever a different kettle of fish. They resemble each other as much as whales and sharks; both are fantasies, but Gormenghast doesn't contain any of the expected ingredients that we usually associate with that genre: no magic, no monsters of mythical size or appearance, etc.; just a black humor satire about ("British" ) socially stratified life, which has gone on until the reign of the 77th earl of Gormenghast: so long, in fact, that all ritual and tradition has lost any of its original meanings. Quite the mind-warping story actually; perfect fare if you want to put yourself into a weird mood - or if you already are.
