Have you ever had the opportunity to read the short poem entitled, "The Mewlips", by J.R.R. Tolkien? It's a dark and sorta twisted piece that we never really see 'the likes of' anywhere else by him. Everytime I read it, I get a very queer feeling and I wonder what he was portraying here. I have never come across any analysis of this work ... have any of you?

An excerpt reads ...

They peep out slyly; through a crack
Their feeling fingers creep,
And when they've finished, in a sack
Your bones they take to keep.

Creepy stuff, eh?

It's not very long ... you can find it in "The Tolkien Reader", a nice little "light-hearted" book that any Tolkien fan should have access to!

"The Tolkien Reader" contains many short stories and poems that tie directly and indirectly into LOTR. There's quite a bit of comic stuff on Bombadil! Check it out!

Sounds like he's talking bout those Spiders that Bilbo faced in The Hobbit. ...but it's only a guess. I've never read that before - i'll have to get that book too!
