President Bush created a panel of sports stars, prominent politicians and a Hollywood celebrity Thursday to boost his volunteerism effort.

Bush's 25-member council is chaired by retired Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green, who ended his 20-year professional football career this winter. Its vice chairmen are former Sens. Bob Dole, R-Kan., and John Glenn, D-Ohio.

Other members include former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young and former Baltimore Orioles infielder Cal Ripken Jr.; Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez; actor Sean Astin from the "Lord of the Rings" films; Wendy Kopp, founder and president of Teach for America; Robert Nardelli, president of The Home Depot; political commentator Cokie Roberts, and actress Dixie Carter.
