Hey all, I'm new to this forum and to Lord of The Rings universe. I've thought a lot recently about developing a sort of expansion to the lord of the rings universe. It's only in the planning stages but I'd like to hear what all of you think of its potential as unfortunetaly, my current knowledge stops at two towers.

This is set 5 years after 2 towers. Middle Earth and Valinor isn't all that makes up the world of Earth. There are two other major areas of the world that have for millennia kept away from Middle Earth. They are aptly named Upper and Lower Earth but have other official names. Uppe Earth is mainly composed of one main body of land and various islands large and small, about the size of Canada, and the lands of the Byzantine Empire and its allies are named Byzantium(I'm taking after byzantine history as well as japanese) and a good distance off its east coast is essentially the islands that today compose of Japan. They have been isolated from Upper Earth until recent times when Japan was united under one Shogan and decided it was time to expand beyond their known lands and they've discovered Upper Earth. After initial hostilities with the byzantines, both sides made peace and went on to take out the "evil" of Upper Earth whatever it is I haven't decided yet. Now, the main difference between Upper and Middle Earth are population sizes. in Middle Earth an army of 10 000 is considered to be almost an impossibility while such an army is considered to be smallin Upper as the combined Byzantine/Japanese armies amount to 20 legions of 5 000 soldiers each. This doesn't include artillery (the technology of such will be the same as of around the 1300's, extremely primitive cannons, trebuchets etc.) and other support. What also makes Upper unique from Middle is all sides in Upper have navies similer to those of actual byzantine and roman warships with certain technological advances combined with magic. Japan's population is approx. 85% human, 10% elvish, and 5% of some race I'm gonna make up. Byzantium's population is more 50/50 with humans and elvish and their allies are drawves and perhaps small numbers of some other races. Upper ships have recently made it to Middle and have landed scouts to recon. the area of Middle, pose as habitants of Middle and bring back info. thus proving many theories that Elves aren't indigenous to Upper. Upper sends to elite legions, the 25th Pax Byzantium and 26th Guardians of Constantinople and various support and the ability to create a base large enough to sustain such numbers for long term durations to open negotiations with Middle to ally with each other, it is also hoped that such a show of strength would help coerce the inhabitants of Middle to join in such an alliance. The reason being *dun dun dun* a new evil!! The inhabitants of Lower Earth are making raids on Middle (perhaps can be tied to the Viking raids of Northern Europe) and their master plan is the usual world domination. Lower may not be as technologically advanced compared to Upper but Lower has made more advances in the magic sciences and they have even greater numbers than that of Upper. Lower isn't aware of the existance of Upper as with all of the few encounters with Upper, Lower assumed that they were in fact from Middle. Upper has managed to capture one Lower ship and through...persuesation of the Lower captives they discovered their master plan, some tactical info. of Lower and all that.

Well, that's about it for my outline. I may be a bit slow to complete my first chapter as I am a bit busy right now with school and air cadets and all other joys of life and my fairly large lack of knowledge of the lord of the rings universe. I just hope I don't twist Tolkien's Middle Earth too much. I guess I could buy the books and go on form there heh heh. I would also enjoy some input on my accuracy of LoTR. Tell me what you think!

Hi Pax,

Welcome to WOTR.

Why not try looking at The Atlas of Middle-Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Some new lands such as what we know as the Americas are not covered (I don't think). However, Europe, the East and, I believe, Africa as we know them are represented in various maps of Middle-Earth.

Perhaps the information gather by Ms Fonstad could help you. you may find that you have a problem with Upper as they may have to live in the Arctic (though they could also be from Scandanavia-region. Have a look and see if that helps.

Also, Lord of the Rings takes place at the end of the Third Age and the beginning of the Fourth age so you may have to adjust your timings if you want to include the arrival of the Japanese and the Byzantine Empire. I think someone worked out that if we apply our time line to the M.E. timeline, then the 6th or 7th Age would begin in 1945 after the defeat of Hitler. it may have been Tolkien himself in a letter to one of the Unwins as he said that each new age begins with the defeat of a great foe or some other such stuff. That would put the period 5 years after Lord of the Rings at least 3 possibly 4 ages ago. Given that the third age lasted over 3000 years I don't think that this time-line would work in context.

Of course I could be just talking rubbish and others will tell you if that is the case. I am no expert but i do think you should read the books at some stage. Not for accuracy or anything (the whole point of fiction is that doesn't have to be real) but because they are a cracking good read.

hope you enjoy the forums.
