Well i've always prefered Alan Lee's work to any other Tolkien artist. I love the dream like quality of his pieces. I especially love his painting of Galadriel. I just think it's so beautiful. I'd be glad to know what other people think:)

I think I prefer John Howe.. but then both are so talented. If I could choose both on the poll I would, because they're are just amazing.

Their styles are pretty different. I think I prefer Alan Lee's pictures. I like John Howe's pictures, too, especially the one with the Nazgul and the river.

Alan Lee. His Gollum is amazing and his pictures have a kind of fairytale magical style whereas Howe's seem too rough and real.

there were two earlier threads on this... one wasnt a poll but most liked howe better... in the other, alan won i think
as for me, i like lee. his style is great plus quite realistic. thing about howe, his paintings (to me) seem less evolved or whatever than lees

i love them both for different reasons........but i think that Howe would just edge out Lee for my favourite Tolkien image of all time........his dark tower with the fell beast.......fab painting

i dont know what it is about John Howe's work that i dont like. I mean i like some of it. I feel in a way that it's too precise (i cant really think of a better word). I like the dream like quality of Alan Lee's work. To me it just fits better with the whole LOTR concept.

I find Alan Lee's work alittle to dark and unexciting, he said himself he doesn't like drawing pictures of high stress because he doesn't want to ruin the book.

Definitely John Howe! He is so talented, and his figures so realistic... but of course, that's just me. I happen to like realism in art. But he is talented in other ways then realism as well! The movement in his art is incredible. Why, oh why isn't he winning this poll? Come vote for him, Howe fans!
Of course, Lee is good too,I like the line of his drawings- he captures the mystical sense of Middle Earth as another world. But for me, Howe is better- he's my role model.
(By the way, I have a few pieces of fanart I want to post- does anyone know how (Howe :) ) or who to ask? Sorry to bother you- I don't know where to put this...)

John Howe every time!!! I've never been much of a fan of Alan Lees work to be entirely honest. I just dont like that particular style. Sorry! Also worth mentioning though is pretty much anything by Ted Nasmith and 'The Siege Of Gondor' by Stephen Hickman. Check out that pic for what we can look forward to in ROTK. Awesome.

alan lee all the way... his work is moodier and a bit more abstract, his composition and use of color is wat better...
fav pic: lee's painting of Luthien is gorgeous... and the painting of smaug slipping beneath the water is neat... and the spiders are awesome..

yeah i love his painting of Luthien-It's really beautiful. It captures her beauty in that he doesnt try to depict it precisely, it's very fluid, almost like a reflection in water.

Well art is all a matter of personal taste. i'm pretty much the opposite to you Bonos-Girl but that's cool. It's like any other kind of art. Some people love it and some hate it. I love art, i've done some LOTR art, but i dont have a scanner or a digi camera, so i cant put it anywhere online:( shame. It's great seeing different interpretations of the same scenes or characters i think.

yep...i love seeing different versions of the same thing. its cool how two people can read the same passage and get entirely differnet pictures out of it.
i don't particularly hate Alan Lees drawings. i dunno...they're definitely beautiful....i just....don't like them...if you see what i mean....not that you will cos i don't!

lol no i get you. I feel the same about John Howe's. I can see perfectly well that he is an excellent artist, but there's just something about his style i dont like. Totally down to my taste i guess.

I prefer Lee's scenery &
Howe's portraits/folk
I'd have to pick individual painting from each one:
Lee's Frodo and Dwarves crossing the bridge
Howe's uber-troll & Sam rescueing Frodo from Shelob
I have a binder of my favorite movie images from LotR.
I think I will start a binder or favorite artwork. It'll be hard to print online - to capture the colors just right. But can you imagine buying artbooks and cutting out the ones you want for a scrapbook? I actually would do that rather than tab or dogear an entire library - how expensive would THAT get! Some of my favorites are ONLY online 'cause they're fan art and not published in books - the talent is astounding!

I love the muted colours that Alan uses in his paintings. They remind me of Arthur Rackham illustrations. And talking of illustrators, I was browsing through my old books the other day and came across an copy of the Hobbit that I'd been given by my godmother when I was little. I'd forgotten about it, and to my delight It's illustrated by Alan Lee!

I won the maths prize at school and they gave me book vouchers so i went out and bought the Alan Lee colour illustrated Hobbit to go with the copy of LOTR. I just love the illustrations they're so dreamlike and they help to draw you into the world :)
