can we have a little less of the **** please?.........and the reason that there was no real battle was because with the coming of the eagles they all knew that the ring had been destroyed and Sauron defeatedand the allies of Mordor scattered, without leaders
and it wasnt Pippin that killed the witchking.......it was Merry and Eowyn of Rohan

Well, anyways, just keep reading and you'll find all your answers, unless you wanna be spoiled. in that case...

And didn't the eagles arrive before the ring was destroyed? Not that much before, but before.

ahh ok........so you were talking about the chapter "The Black Gate Opens" ok im with you now........and i "got Merry" Faramir, from not being sure what Roca was talking about;)......that line about the eagles is actually in two chapters......."The Black Gat Opens" and "The Field of Cormallen".........and actually the eagles arrive just as the ring is destroyed, since it was as the eagles stooped on the Nazgul, that they "turned and fled, and vanished into Mordors shadows, hearing a sudden terrible call out of the dark tower"

Hi Roca
indeed there is no fight because in the very moment when the battle begins the ring is destroyed at Mount Doom and the strength of the evil host fails. The coming of the eagles is a sign for this, and it is also a referral to 'The Hobbit' where the eagles were coming in a very important situation.

ok everyone calm down. I'm reading from the book here and the order of sequence is
1) Gandalf rejects the terms of The Mouth of Sauron
2) Forces are arranged for battle
3) first assault crashes in to the ranks of gondor and rohan
4) Beregond is stricken down by a troll-chief
5) Pippin stabs the troll with his Numenorean blade
6) Troll lands on Pippin knocking him out....
7) ...just as the eagles appear and attack nazgul
8) nazgul fly of at the call of Sauron because Frodo has put the Ring on
9) Ring destroyed, Sauron defeated

10: Nazgul become fireballs.

By the way, how did Beregond survive?

I don't know, I thought Pippin killed the troll, then it lands on both of them.

Gimli pulls a rather unconscious Pippin out of a pile of dead bodies, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm a bit confused about the state of this thread. Its more of a lit discussion than a movie discussion. If I closed would it be missed? Sorry, but its just random enough to bother me...... lol

Beregond died when the Troll struck him. And yes, I do believe it was Gimli who found Pip. ;)

Wait, wait! Trout me if I'm confused, but didn't Beregond live to be pardoned by Aragorn?

Meriadoc Brandybuck

Maybe you're right. But I'm almost 100% sure that he was pardoned BEFORE the Black Gate Opens chapter. I'm looking it up now. ;)

CONFIRMATION: You are right about that. He's pardoned in The Steward and the King in Book 6.
