Name your child after a Tolkien character?
Or would that constitue child abuse?
In a few years time are elementary schools going to be filled with Aragorns, Frodos, Faramirs and Eowyns- whatdyer reckon?

I Love some of the names in the Tolkien books such as Eowyn. weather or not I actually do name my kids after Tolkien characters is anoher story.

Maybe before the films came out, it would have been cool as not many people would know the origin of the names, but since its now a wide spread thing, the child would probably be in for some ribbing

I also like some of the names used in LOTR (Eowyn & Arwen are two faves), but, to actually use them...ermmm...not sure. I agree that since the films came out that possibly no good could come from naming your child after a character. *Can just see "roll call" on first day of school...."Is Frodo present?" lol ....hmmmm, maybe not a good idea* :jester:

I don't think I'd name a child after any of the main characters. If I was to use a Tolkien-ish name I'd choose one that is not so well known. But I don't think I'd name a child after a Tolkien character anyway. You never know though.
It's interesting though.. there's a Swedish site where you can look up names and see how many people there are in Sweden with that name. Just for fun I looked up some Tolkien names.. here's what came up.
Frodo.. there are 2 males in Sweden with that name, 1 of them uses it as his first name
Aragorn.. there are 6 males in Sweden with that name, 2 uses it as their first name
Legolas.. 5 males have this name, 2 uses it as their first name
Gandalf.. 15 males have this name, 4 uses it as their first name
Galadriel.. 17 females have this name, but none of them uses it as their first name
Arwen.. 8 females have this name, 2 of them uses it as their first name
Eowyn.. 5 females have this name, but none of them uses it as their first name
Theoden.. 2 males have this name, but they do not use it as their first name
Sauron.. 1 male has this name, but he does not use it as his first name (thankfully)
It's interesting. lol And no, I don't know any of them. I did meet a horse named Gandalf once though. ;)

That's so funny! roflmao Yeah, good thing no one has Sauron for first name! I didn't think Galadriel would be the most popular! When I become an adult and get a dog or a cat, I think I'll name it after one of the LotR characters. But I wouldn't dare name any humans that way! lol

No.. I like Peregrin, Meriadoc and I love Samwise. They're all nice names.. and apparently not that popular.
(there are 2 men in Sweden with the name Meriadoc, but neither of them uses it as their first name. None with the name Samwise [yet], and 3 with the name Peregrin.. 2 of them uses it as their first name)

Thats what i figured, some of th names are really unique, but after the movies, the poor kid would have no chance .
Having said that, some of the lesser known names (haldir, Luthien, Rohan Etc) have such a poetic quality!

Hmm... Can you imagine, this big bulk of a bully marches over and stands in front of a kid menacingly...
"So you're called Aragorn eh? You think that's cool huh? You're just a mere scrawny brat with neither brain nor brawn!"
Then another kid appears...
"He is no mere scrawny brat! He is Aragorn... whoops, you knew that already... uh... son of... whatever his dad's name is... you owe him your allegiance."
"Havo dad, Legolas..."
"DON'T ask me to sit down!" the kid whips out a make-believe plastic bow and quiver filled with arrows.
"I want you to sit down! I can deal with him myself!" Aragorn whips out a sword made of plasticine.
"Is there a fight? Is there a fight? How DARE you two leave me out of it!" Another kid comes rushing out with an axe made of newspaper...
Bully *sweatdrops*
Final scene is at the principal's office where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are being lectured for using violence, while a certain kid called Gandalf was scolded for supposedly waving a golf club around and casting pretend spells. A bunch of 4 guys were there too because someone witnessed them eating popcorn and watching the fight. Their names are Frodo, Pippin, Merry and Sam. And Frodo was especially excited to see the bully get beaten up because he claimed that the bully tried to steal his ring!

I think problems with stupid guys at school will exist allways because of the names or because of other things, so it's no reason for not putting your kids the names you like.I have a weird name in my country (it's supposed to have celtic roots) and I never had problems with that, and i'm so proud of it.
well i allways knew how to defend myself, i'm a bit like Eowyn.

I'd find it strange to call my children with such name even... that's way too weird... I don't like naming children after book/movie heros... even when they are usual names... in a way you say - Your 16 year old son Aragorn comes home at midnight - you sit him in the living room and play LotR... see what a child I wanted... and what I got heh
Your 10-year-old daughter Arwen asks why her lips aren't like Livs.
The school's psychiatrist wants to see on Wednesday about your son's Frodo unhealthy interest in rings.
Your daughter Galadriel asks whether she was born in a radioactive area.

I would NOT name my kids after a Tolkien character. What if they grow up and don't like the books? That's like my parents deciding to name me "Amidala" or something (for the reference, I hate Star Wars).
Furthermore those tolkien-named kids would probably be made fun of.
If not, it would be funny anyway:
"Pippin! Stop bullying Sauron!"
"Gimli, you have to finish your plate! Look at yourself! You're so thin!"
"Hey Saruman, guess what? Merry asked Arwen out today, and she said yes!"

um, not to be a dick, but what about samwise? thats not really too wierd cuz im sure everyone would wind up calling him sam for shot, and if he hated it that much he can tell people his name is samuel. and elenor(sp?) is fine, as well as rose, and i think most of the girls names, as girls name are supposed to be beautiful or some ****.. worst name ever though... Okay, Samwise, maybe, but Sam is a too popular name.
I mean, like, Tomas is the most popular name in The Netherlands, so for me that would be a reason not to call my child Tomas, y'know? 'Cause when everyone has that name already, it'd be boring and unoriginal.

its kinda sad though cuz liek in other countries names are so beautiful and interesting, in the US we got borign **** liek tom and steve and bryan and willaim. blah. but if we name out kids something different that get picked on. i hate that,

I DO know a boy named SAM who was MOST DEFINITELY named in honor of Samwise Gamgee in the hopes that he would become the honorable namesake of our faithful Tolkien Character. I remember when Sam was born and he is now 19yrs old and attending Christian College in New England. He is a talented young actor, devoted friend to many, and Tolkien Fan. When his family was busy, recovering from his birth (he weighed close to 10 lbs - vaginal birth, ouch!) my mom and I glued fur to the top of our sneakers and worked in their garden to keep up with the weeds. There were lots of laughs all around in a time when Tolkien fans gathered and entertained each other BEFORE personal computers, email and the internet.
I doubt we'll see too many Aragorns in our schools. But it will be hard to keep my inner voice from adding "wise" to Sam.

I dunno if i'd actually name kids after Tolkein stuff, but i do have some pretty STRANGE names made up, and i do borrow names to make similar ones cause i'm writting tis really, kinda stupid book, and the people have to have wierd names in my opinion. Ok, i'm officially messed up.... don't worry about me, this is actually a good state of mind for me, it's the closest to sanity I'll ever get!!!! lol ;) but animals would be ok. People in books- ok. your kids--ok as long as it's just reminiscent, not identical, and not so close that it's gonna get the kid made fun of, or a main character's name

Yah, the U.S. or where we live anyway, is very boring. I like variety, and diversity. It's what makes life interresting. Like for French class, we get to choose "French" names. I chose Faye (Fairy or Elf) and then this other guy chose "Shavo" now, Shavo isn't a true French name, he made it up, but now that's what everyone calls him! it's so funny. Everyone loves his "new name."
As for my own children, i don't really think they'd be laughed at. I mean, i don't think i'd name them Frodo or Wormtongue! lol But there are some Tolkien names that are more on the "normal" side and they sound really pretty too. One name that i really love is "Elanor Rose" That's what i want to name my girl (if i ever have one ;) ) I think it's really pretty, and it's not that different. Some other names would be like Eowyn Arabella, Eowyn Lynne... or Even Samwise Peregrin or Samuel Peregrin. I think it's harder to name a boy a Tolkien name than it is to name a girl one. For the girls, they sound really pretty :)

Yep, I agree too. From what I've seen from name generators. But what's the diff between the 2 languages actually?
Tári Celebrindal
March 17th,2003, 05:01 AM
Quenya: The tongue of the High Elves in Valinor, the first to be recorded in writing. It was never widely used in Middle-earth except among the Noldor; the related Eldarin language, Sindarin, was more commonly spoken. By the Third Age, Quenya had become, in Middle-earth, a language used only on formal or state occasions by the Elves and the descendants of the Númenóreans.
The language of the Grey-elves of Beleriand and most commonly used of the Elf-tongues in Middle-earth. When the Noldor returned to Middle-earth at the beginning of the First Age, Thingol decreed that their tongue, Quenya, was not to be spoken in his realms. So the language of his people, Sindarin, came to dominate. Quenya, though, was still used as a language of ceremony and poetry.
Sindarin: Sindarin shared common roots with Quenya, and the two languages had many similar words. Sindarin was said to be more changeful than the older tongue, however, and there were a number of regional 'dialects' of the tongue. The Sindarin spoken in Doriath was said to be the highest and most noble form of the language.

There are a few normal names in LotR such as Bill and Tom for boys and Rose for a girl.
I once had a dog named Pippin.

my hamster is called Pippin lol
I know from bitter experience that having a name that no one can pronounce or that they find funny is difficult to deal with. I wouldnt call my kids after LOTR characters except for the more simple names such as Elanor. But i think i would use them for second names. Having an unusual second name isnt too bad. You dont have to use it, but i think it would be great to give my kids unusual LOTR type second names :)
It would be funny though to have little Frodo's and Pippins running around lol

Yeah, I love that name! I'm also learning Quenya, so I could always make up a nice sounding name! Like....Rómello (from the East), or Falmalinnar (upon foaming waves). Of course, there's always Elen 'a star' or Sile 'shines' (sila means 'is shining')

Yeah, kinda like the girls name Estelle, but with a Tolkien twist.
someone remarked earlier that they thought 'Moria' would be a pretty name for a girl, yesterday I was reading a novel and that was a characters daughters name.
It said he named her Moria because it means 'fate'.
No idea if this is true or not, but doesnt it make it appealing?
Tirithel
April 18th,2003, 04:34 AM
I thought Moria translated to "dark abyss." I could be wrong, (in fact I probably am). Maybe Moria could be like the Scottish name Moira (pronounced Moy-ra) with a Tolky twist- I think Ilike that idea; taking a regular name and just giving it some elven flayva. Mmmm Hmmm.;)

There's always other Tolkien names, not in the movies. Like, Turin, or Luthien, or Beren, Tuor, Hurin, Huor, Thingol, Melian, etc. What you have to do, is pick the least read books, and find a character from them. Or, you could just name your kid Tom and say it's after Tom Bombadil.

its kinda sad though cuz liek in other countries names are so beautiful and interesting, in the US we got borign **** liek tom and steve and bryan and willaim. blah. but if we name out kids something different that get picked on. i hate that,
Well, my name is different, but not too different. Melanie. But that was as creative as my family's ever gotten. Grandpa: Don, Grandma: Julia (very cool, but neither of her parents were born in the US, so that one doesn't count. Grammy: Patricia, Grandpa: Charles. Mom: Jeanetta (which is cool). Aunt: Debra. Dad: Michael. Bros: Michael and Matthew. One thing I've noticed about my family, we have a thing with Jr's. (or at least sharing a first name). My grandpa and oldest uncle are both Don, my other uncle and his son are Mark, and my dad & bro are Mike.

Well, if I did I'd probably choose a name that wasn't all that common. Otherwise the kid would prolly be in for a hard time at school.

June 3rd,2003, 06:58 AM
would i? maybe. I would NOT name my son Gandalf or Saruman, tho i think Illuvatar might not be so bad for a boy's middle-name. i'd name my daughter Arwen, but thatd probly be her middle name because if i ever have a daughter i wanna name her Leaena.
but, for the majority, i probly wouldn't name my kid a Tolkien name.
HobbitFriend
June 3rd,2003, 11:53 PM
I think if you want to get real Tolkien, like Frodo or Pippin or Legolas, etc... names that people would definately know it's from LotR, then they'd be better as middle-names. That way they won't get picked on in school or anything. But I don't see anything wrong with naming someone Tokien names such as Sam, Merry, Elanor, or Nessa which are pretty common/"normal" names anyway. No one has to know that your child's name is Sam named after Samwise Gamgee ;)
But i'd even like an elvish type name... not one that people can right off the bat asscociate with Tolkien (for teasing purposes) but names like Elenya, Rodyn, or something like that

you ride horses as well? what do you do? i jump. (havent started the hunter jumper courses yet...) i want a horse named in Elvish... haven't decided yet tho.
but yes, i spose it'd be better to stick to naming animals after Characters and whatnot, and naming human children something in one of the languages so they don;t get teased. but that's just my oppinion.

I have a friend who just recently gave birth. We were talking about what to name the child while she was pregnant; she was getting ideas, and I said, how about Reuel? It sounds cool, you don't see/hear it a lot, and best of all, it's an homage to the Professor! I was surprised months later when I saw her, she thanked me because she ended up naming her son Francis Reuel.

I'll probably give my children LotRish names for their middle names. Or I might give them two normal names, then an LotRish name, then of course, their last name. But I don't think I'd give them obvious LotR names. And I would name my pets after characters.
BTW, I forgot to mention this, I have a cousin named Pippin, a friend named Arwen, and the brother of another friend is named Aragorn. I've also met a dog named Frodo, and a fish named Sauron.

I think that if you named your child after a LoTR character that had a pretty name it most certainly wouldn't constitute as child abuse lol. I mean if it were something like Frodo, that would be a little cruel because it's so widely known :p But if it were something less obvious, like not the entire name but using part of a less well known name...that might be cool. I really wish I could name my daughter Arwen or Eowyn, but those are much too well known. I just think if I could get something into her name about LoTR, it might somehow bless her with the gift of creativity and wisdom. Yep, those are the crazy sentimental values in me talking lol.
btw...HoaH...I wish I could meet this guy named Aragorn!! I wonder if he's anything like his name lol
