Sauron was Morgoth's servant and second in command...

In Christian terms, Morgoth would be like Satan and Sauron just a powerful demon IMO

although over time morgoth became less powerful because every time he commited an evil deed his powers were diminished. I got the feeling that in the end Sauron was almost as powerful as Morgoth.

yea Finrod and Thorongil. You guys are right. Morgoth was 'the evil' in Middle Earth. Sauron learned everything from him, so IMO Morgoth was a lot more powerful than Sauron, or at least to begin with.

Well, in the beginning Melkor was the most powerful being (next to Ilúvatar) ever to exist. But after a while since his rebellions he lost most of his power.
The same thing happend with Sauron, he lost a great part of his native strengh when he forged the One Ring.

That may teach us that evil just gets weaker and weaker all the time.

Morgoth was the more powerful but the only reason Suaron didn't exceed his master's strength was because he spent many years serving another - ie: he was under Morgoth's command and not his own. Morgoth served no one.

Melkor is the foremost and most powerful out of all the Ainur. But he is evil and alone until he corrupts servants such a Sauron, a former maiar of Aule as stated in the Valaquenta. As for him getting weaker, not sure. All I know is the rest of the Valar gang bang him.

L O L... sorry the term 'gangbang' makes me laugh. Bringing Tolkien's characters of great power down to a lower level just sounds funny...

Well, you guys have pretty much answered the question, but I'll just put it into simpler terms;

Morgoth/Melkor = Valar

Sauron = Maia
(Pretty much akin to the Balrog)

and that, is that.

i can't say anything new on the matter, if it were sauron vs Melkor in a fight, melkor would destroy him, mind you Huan the hound thing did sauron in as well so he can't have been that great. :)

Also, According to JRR in one of his letters, "Sauron had his One Ring while the whole of ME was Morgoth's Ring"
