New Avatars!

Sorry if I'm a bit slow here but i just noticed. New ones include the council of elrond, moria gate , the dead marshes (mine), Denathor and Pippin, Ringwraith and the mouth of Sauron.

Please correct me if i've missed any, which i'm sure i have. Anyway...they're cool :p

haha yah, they seem to update them every once in a while. I just updated mine to the Midgewater Marshes and a while ago they didn't even have that one. :) I love looking for the updates. There were quite a few new ones this time. I think the 3 trolls were one of them. ~ btw, love your avatar RingBearer :thumbs:

You know, mostly the avatars consists of scenary and stuff... but what truly caught my eye was the lack of sole female avs (minus Galadriel's only.. I know there's plenty, but I'm not legible for them yet)..

I've got this two really lovely pics of LOTR that I think could be used as avs (at least... for meee....!! No way can I submit more than 30 000 posts to get my own custom avatar! That'll be like, in 20 years!).... just wondering if you guys would like to consider them?

lol yah, i think it's 20000 posts. If you click on "Options" then "Edit Options" scroll down to the bottom where it says Avatars, click "More info..." and then scroll all the way down to the bottom, it says how many posts you need :)

You won't be able to upload your own avatars....if they are to be added to our selection, they have to be in portrait form (as opposed to Landscape or square) and they also have to represent a chapter in the story in some way. If your two fit that bill then Suggest you PM Illuvatar and ask him about it.....he's the one who deals with all that stuff.

Edit: Now look at that, I only have to mention his name and Poof he arrives lol

I thought that this site was going to be totally free in all areas becuase War of the Ring was set up to share the love of Tolkien and that the site was a non-profit organisation.

If people paid for mebership to get special options that non paying mebers couldn't get then wouldn't the site be makeing money out of it....................

Well Coondron that is true. They were going to set it up, as a way for us to help out with the cost of keeping this site up & running.. I do believe thou, that even the non paying members were supposed to get some cool extras as well.. I guess thou, they still haven't worked out all the details yet, so I wouldn't fret... :thumbs:

Yes, Coondron, we are a non-profit organisation, and we have just incorporated as well. The thing is, in order to provide fans like yourself with the amount of high quality images, downloads, and a fairly responsive forum, etc., it requires a fairly large server, and a heck-of-a-lot of bandwidth per month.

This puts the cost of the site to over $1,000 a month which is just a bit much for us to keep coming out of pocket with. There are 3 of us founding members that fund the site, and the moneys that we are planning to raise with the Subscription plans and hosting options are only designed to off-set some of the costs.

Let me make this clear, NONE of the benefits that you currently have are going to be affected. Trust me, what we've come up with is going to be a lot of fun, and well worth the membership fees.

Well, custom avatars are assigned, the others are available, and can be selected by updating your profile. The custom ones are not visable during update, so to be reassigned the custom one requires admin assistance.

Although, I've never seen someone give up they're custom one. ;)

Ahh...good question LD!

When I originally populated the avatars, I searched around for some on the various art galleries on the internet, and got a bunch out of our Art Gallery.

Some of the newly updated standard ones have been submitted by one of our staff (Catz!), and another staffer(Nessa the Dancer) went through our entire gallery and got us the rest.

And the custom ones are provided by the members who earn them.

ay i was playing around with FW and i got some cool Photos of aragorn,Gollum,Frodo and so in the upcomeing ROTK movie i put a frame like thing around them and make them nice and small they look very sweet want me to send them to you Illuvatar??

Well, we went back and forth with whether we should use art and/or pics for avatars for quite a bit.

And we decided to stick with just paintings, we have found that photo images contrast too sharply with the layout.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone with 20000 posts and above yet? Well, anyway, I already found a nice pic among my picture collection. It's got an elf girl on it, and would you believe it, she's blond and has a quiver and a bow. (but her hair is just tied up in one braid though) When I saw that I'm like 'Whoa! Uncanny, reminds me of a certain elf' cuz I haven't been thru my picture collection for a while, and that one certainly didn't belong to any tolkien website or whatsoever. lol
Ah well, let's hope I get to use it some day. lol

I actually want to go through the Book Titles and avatars first, before i get a custom one. So, if I ever become MotM before then, i don't know if i'll change right away or not... ;) ...and I still can't think of a good title lol

If any one here gets MoM and find the picture they want but it has a black background, needs resizeing, special effects. I would be more then happy to fix it for them. Or even if there is someone who wants me to do something along those lines for them:thumbs:

thanks....it was all down to mirky and everyone else in chat really...i wanted to have "evil [something] of doom"...and i wanted the something to begin with D so it would go with doom.... someone posted a link to the encyclopedia of tolkien thing....and, although i didn't find a word to fit in that phrase i found "dark elves".....so i told the others and someone (probably mirky again) said "queen of the dark elves, princess of the dark elves...etc...) and so i chose queen...god thats a long story!! hehe

Hey Adun! Your picture for your avatar is the Goddess of Vale by Jonathan Earl Bowser, isn't it? Oh my, I just found out today! I love this guy's fantasy art pieces! They rock totally! :thumbs: I've got quite a huge collection of his fantasy art works in my computer lol Wish I could buy the actual pieces. :)

i have a question concerning avatars.... when you get a custom avatar, does it already have to be an avatar, or can it be a picture that someone (ie. one of the mods) turns into an avatar :huh: (not like i'll be getting one any time soon... haha but i was j/w)

It can be a pic that someone turns into an avatar I guess. Maybe you'll have to resize your picture to make it fit a certain configuration and size. If I ever get to have a custom avatar, I'm gonna use one of the pics of the paintings of Jonathan E. Bowser! :thumbs:

it has to be landscape...and it has to be the right size approximately....and it can't be a photo..and it has to be kinda LOTR-y....lol

we prefer paintings, to fit in with the look of the site........or designs like mine or Orcs......and yeah, it helps if theyre portrait......landscape gets distorted badly, or it would have to be cropped, which can spoil the balance on some pics
other than that, we'll consider most jpg images.......just remember that for an avatar, the image will be reduced to a 50x50 pixel size so its best if its not too detailed, as youll lose that in the smaller size

we just got brand new computers, Galadriel! You should have seen me in the English office the other day! It was like Christmas! See, the Computers that were in there before were REALLY ancient and the one will all our GD (Green Dome - our school literary magazine) work on it, had a virus! and it was very slow! I walked in the other day and there was a brand new Dell XP computer with a lazer mouse!!!! I was like, "KIMMY! We got new computers!!!" So, of course i had to go put wallpaper and a screen saver on it and then come online to WotR lol Even Ms. C got a new one! What I don't get is how our school can afford brand new XP computers, but we can't afford anything else! (ie. a NEW SCHOOL! which is falling apart around us.... :huh: )

our brand new computers have win2000 on (don't ask me how cos i don't know....windows usually rejects anyone trying to degrade to an older version an you can't buy win2000 machines anymore...). we can't fiddle around with the screen settings and its really boring...they just happen to have the fastest internet connection i've ever used!!

i like mine right now and i really like Galadriel and Hobbitfriend's... though i like most of them =) they're all really nice... i think that's one of the best things about wotr...it's because of the avatars..i've been to other sites where their avatars aren't as great...and pretty and diverse...
the smileys and the presentation of the boards are the major pluses of this site as opposed to other message board sites...

but i'm gonna stay with my avatar for a while...until the next chapter perhaps =)
