I HATE french--with a passion.
I took french for two years and spanish for five years (and I'll take spanish another four or five years), and if I ever have to intentionally mutter french EVER again, I will simply KILL myself. It sounds like they are spitting everywhere, or there is something stuck in their throat and there's letters ALL OVER THE PLACE where there is absolutely postively NO NEED WHATSOEVER for them to be there. Let's take, for example, the following sentence:
Quel est le nom de ce chien? Qu'avez-vous dit?
What is that dog's name? What did you say?
Now, pronounce that sentence like it is:
Quel est le nom de ce chien? Qu'avez-vous dit?
Let's ignore all the 'postrophes and dashes, too.
Now, pronounce that sentence like it is:
Quel ay luh nom duh suh she-in? Ka vay voo deet?
Yah. But you have to say it like it is while spitting all over the place, otherwise they'll know that you're American.
Lousy french language!

I don't like the sound of French and it's reputation of language of the languages makes me almost hate it, even though I don't waste hatred on languages and stuff.
But I actually almost enjoy the sound of German (self-suggestion maybe ;) ) which is probably strange.....
I like the sound of Spanish and Italian too
And I love the sound of Bulgarian, lol

I myself hate Spanish with a passion..... Its the MESSIEST, FOULEST, and UGLIEST to the ears...than any language I've tred to speak.... I'm sticking to French because my school has either that, German, or Latin (yeeuck) But i like french... I think its a sexy language

I really wanted to take French in high school, I think it's a beautiful language....but since I live in Southern California, and have yet to be confronted with an overwhelming influx of refugees from the City of Light, it's a good thing that I settled for Spanish....of course, I also took Latin, too, so at least I can somewhat understand it....too late for me to get the "ear," though, alas...........

I SWEAR A! ELBERETH! YOU SOOOOOOOO SOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!! Our choices were french, german or latin too. I think that latin would be handy if i was going for a classics degree or summut, but to be an astronomer apparently you need to be fluent in a MODERN language (don't ask me why! lol)
I think italian is nice too...more...sexy, rather than romantic... :naughty:

I took Latin, and Spanish, and two of my best friends were Italian with parents and/or grandparents from the Old Country....although it took careful listening, I was always pretty much able to figure out what they were saying (especially when Lucia's mom was yelling at us)....the basics are pretty much the same as Spanish, that is, Latin-based, so if you're familiar with Latin, Italian is pretty easy to pick up...I found French a bit harder because of the accent, but when it comes to ballet terms, I find I can still remember most of them!
Pil
July 19th,2002, 07:06 PM
I've been learning french since year three (though you couldn't tell!) :p I find the accent comes naturally when speaking french...but i can't speak english in a french accent...hmmm...

A! Elbereth must be french...(gotta go back on the replies a bit to know what i am talking about lol roflmao lol)...i wouldn't really mind the french or there language if it wasn't for two reasons: 1. you have to hold your nose and flare your nostrils at the same time to speak it...and 2, to live in france or be french (no offense to anyone out there) you have to be so full of yourself that you are about to blow up

I'm taking French for another two years now for GCSE, but if you think french is bad, you should try Welsh! We're being forced to take Welsh next year because it's our '1st language'.
I'm probably the last person to say this, but I don't think they should force us to take a dying language, there are only 3 or 4 major cities left here where they speak it all day every day. We've got Welsh comprehensive schools here, so I think it should be a matter of choice whether you take the language or not.
Ok, I've finished ... :mmmm: ... I'm calm ... BTW I do like French AND I've had a look at a Quenya course I found on line and it does seem pretty simple to grasp!

French is quite easy to write, but I have my orals on Tuesday. I have been told that I am a good linguist. I have replied, 'no'. lol I find it amusing that to say something like 95 you have to say 'four twenties and a fifteen'.
The best language is, of course, Latin; it is just so logical, and can be used effectively in both straightforward accounts and poetry. It also makes most other languages much easier to understand.

I love the sound of French but I Luuuuurve the sound of spanish and Maori so I'm learning those. I've already learnt Maori but I don't start Spanish until next year. I gave up learning French after two years - because my French teacher gave me food poisoning. But I still think it's beautiful.

I take French in high school. Of course, I live in Canada, and have three French stations on cable (for the SEVEN francophones living in this province), I take French in school (not because I want to, but you can't get a decent job in this country without knowing French, unless you want to be a rig pig, which is someone who works on the oil rigs and makes more money than all people with education), we have FRENCH on all our cereal boxes, FRENCH instructions for every product we can buy, a FRENCH side on every food product, AND EVERYBODY IN OUR GOVERNMENT SPEAKS FRENCH!!! IT DRIVES US ALL CRAZY!!!! WESTERN SEPERATISM!

Tar-Vanimelde
December 6th,2003, 11:58 PM
An AP is an exam that, if you get a good enough score on, can give you college credit in the subject it is taken for. You generally have to take the AP class as well, which is super hard.

"There was a long silence. Gandalf sat down again and puffed at his pipe, as if lost in thought. His eyes seemed closed, but under the lids he was watching Frodo intently. Frodo gazed fixedly at the red embers on the hearth, until they filled all his vision, and he seemed to be looking down into profound wells of fire. He was thinking of the fabled Cracks of Doom and the terror of the Fiery Mountain"

I find it quite hard to listen to, actually. They slur and shortcut just as much as we do. I like to watch the French news just because they talk more about world events, as opposed to in Canada or the United States, than either the Anglo-Canadian channels or the American ones (respectively). But I never understand more than half of it, so I always watch it with closed captions.

I always found listening the hardest, and reading to a lesser extent. I can kinda produce french in writing and speaking, but when it comes to understanding a french person speaking it it's a whole other ball game, especially if you're actually IN france. I mean, on the listening tapes and stuff i think they do kinda slow down, in the difficult bits anyway, but of course real french speakers dont do that, so it can be hard for my little language-challenged brain. lol

I know a lot of French people who are from Québec and they tell me that most of the time, if they're writing to each other informally, they'll write in English, because it's so much easier.
One would think that if a person was actually in France (or Québec) it would be somewhat easier to understand than you'd think, because if they see you struggling to understand them, they'll slow down and pronounce better, just like any of us would do.
Unless, of course, they're all as snobby as I've heard they are. But I'm sure that's not true.

The infinitive itself isn't that difficult if you look at it by itself–hey, it's just the unconjugated version of the verb....but then you get into this thingy later on that if you conjugate a verb and then have another verb after it (ex: J'aime manger) you have to decide whether to but à after the verbe or "de" or nothing...and it's really hard because there really isn't any rule to decide by!!! :o my teacher says that the only strategy is to "feel the verb" ;) Yes, great help madame, I can just see myself during the test, "oh, this one feels like an à verbe to me..." lol

Hey, we can understand you, BG, so you can't be that bad. I'm sorry to hear that you have a bad teacher, though. The good ones are the ones that make all the difference.
Why do all our french teachers seem to be women? just curious
Striderfan- I totally feel you, I'm in AP french as well. I hate all that "well, there's not really a rule for this" ****, but apparently (according to my sister, who is in Paris a ce moment) all you really need is:
present, futur, passe compose, imparfait, and certain conditional verbs. Of course, this is for day to day living, not the AP test, darn it! All I can say is it's "aider a" and "demander de". I'm sure that is a huge help lol I don't have anything for the infinative thing, but if you want I can send you some verb review sheets I made that have lots of definitions, formation rules, irregular stems, signal phrases, etc on them. (PM me if you want them, but I'll have to send them when I get back in two weeks ;) )
Btw, what are the shortcuts for accents?

About the male/female teacher thing...my first french teacher I had from 6th-8th grade was a guy from Cameroon...I remember the very first day our 2nd year with him he went up to the board and wrote "l'Anglais est mort." and made us all chant it over and over again for the entire period! lol

English is dead? What the heck??
I had a male French teacher last year. He was really mean and couldn't speak French. lol Really! He had taken French in the University of Alberta but he was a bit too slow to understand it when listening and he couldn't speak it coherently. It was really funny.
We've had Spanish lessons offered way up here but nobody ever took them so they were cancelled. More students went into Ukranian. But then, that's only because I live in a small industrial town and everybody is Ukranian. Except me! Most of my family is from England and Scandinavia.
Actually, more students even went into Cree than Spanish. (Cree is the language that the natives speak around here. Not that any of them speak it anymore.lol)
However, most kids just say that English is good enough, since everybody around the world speaks it (apparently). They all boycott French class; I guess it's because they're all sick of hearing about it. But then, this is Canada.

Thank you ever so much for the offer , but right now I've got so many french review sheets they're comming out my ears...lol AP french final exam is on WEDNESDAY and i am sooooo freaked out :o ...but I checked my grade and I have to get above a 66% on the final to still keep an A- lol but I'm still worried...
another problem with the à and de thing is that sometimes if you change it to one or the other, it has a totally different meaning :elfeek:...take the verb decider, for example. Decider de is to decide to, but se decider à is to make up one's mind....ahhhh!!! :o Crazy french people...;) *shakes head sadly*
Cree? that sounds really cool! :elfeek: We only can choose between french or spanish at my school, and since I'm in California spanish would be more helpful, but my old school only offered french so that's what I got and that's what I'm sticking with

sounds interesting...hmm.....what does it sound like?
Fëalossë
December 17th,2003, 02:34 AM
They use a lot of throat sounds, but they do it a lot softer than we do. (G is very frequent.) I think it sounds nice, and I like their writing too. It's just some simple shapes like triangles and circles, and when they change directions it changes the vowel that follows it. I've never learned any of it, but I'd like to.

You should get them. The translation is done very well: the "poem" that Gollum recites about fish actually rhymes in French. (Most of the other ones don't, though.) Except that the illustrations are funny-looking. I learned a lot about French punctuation just be reading an actual French book, and it might as well be the Lord of the Rings. Haha.
