I think that the parting of Elrond and Arwen is one of the saddest parts of the book.

Indeed I think it is the part hardest to understand. in fact I suppose it is actually impossible for us to understand it. Ok so some of us know the loss of a loved one through death but to live for eternity knwoing you will never see them again. Remember too for Elves the past is fresh in their minds, would the process of grief we have apply to them?

Also Tolkien hints that for men beyond the circles of a world is ...."more than a dream". So not only must Elrond live knowing he will never see Arwen again, but Arwen too, feasibly, does the same. This is a grim fate for any family.

As I said I don't think we can really understand it, since we cannot envisage death or not existing or immortality........

What do you think?

I agree, such a parting will never happen ever again in our world, and so it is hard to comprehend the feelings and emotions shared by the parties involved. A bitter parting it was between Elrond and Arwen (in the book anyway - i doubt FilmElrond will manage such emotion). :mmmm:

Cooly? Sure it passes.:)
I hope Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Liv Tyler can manage the emotion at the part, if its included at all. I've only seen Weaving in The Matrix, and, um, oh I just hope he can pull it off!

Elrond and Arwen parting is actually bigger than i had first thought. I didn't really ponder it before. I mean, he was never happy bout the marriage, but gave way, only to see his dauhter become a mortal and have to leave her knowing she was going to die. That's worse than knowing they will never meet. Sometimes THAT can happen, but you are sure of the wellbeing of the other person. It was different with arwen though.... :(

Hugo has a few things up his sleeve...been in a lot more than the Matrix...he can definitely act, thats for sure.

Arwen and Elrond. heavy issue. the only thing i can compare that situation to is when Beren and Luthien were given the choice to come to life once more...abdicating all that they would have...Luthien joining Beren for all eternity. one can neither imagine the heartache nor how in the world it could ever be told adequately on screen. i have a feeling that PJ will do something with it tho...something to make all the purists cry.

To give one's daughter away, hard as hell to do. To give allow her to give away her immortality...*throws hands up*...can't even comprehend it.

If Hugo can handle to act a crack in the shell he has, it'll be very touching IMO

You know how they go off and talk privately and we don't actually read what they say? Do you think it will be like that in the film or will they actually show the scene? What would YOU like to see? :p

i think that they should (and probably will...) show the actual scene but....

behave yourself....;) lol
Mmmmm i dont know....i cant help thinking that if the scene is set up right ie: so that the audience is in no doubt as to what is happening, it might be more effective to have the scene out of earshot, perhaps at first in the foreground, and then once the fact that it is the farewell is established, allowing them to move back out of hearing range....that way every person can imagine their own farewell....all the more poignant, for being personal.....or.......maybe not:grin: .....guess well just have to WAS(wait and see)

I dunno...could that confuse the Tolkein virgins? It's nice for us to do that in the book...when we actually have the pleasure of understanding the plot...those who were confoooosed by FOTR might need that little nudge in the right direction...if there are actually people out there like that...some of my mates being part of them... :duh: lol

Catz

well, yeah....but what i was thinking was you could have the establishing shot where they actually say something overt along the lines of "this is the last time we'll ever see each other again" etc...and then have then move out of earshot and just see the farewell as such...Y'know?

::tear:: that has got to be a sad part. i'll probaby be crying when i see it in the theatre, no matter how they do it.
that oughta get some funny looks...
but anyway, hugo weaving'll probably act it out being all noble-like, and Liv will be happy to be with Aragorn, and it will be very beautiful no matter how sad.

whoever here is in doubt about Hugo's acting abilities, see Priscilla queen of the desert, not only is he fantastic, but so's the movie.
