We know that Glamdring was forged in Gondolin right?
And PJ and co give some history of Hadafang (sp?) (Arwen and Elrond's sword) as being forged for Idril in Gondolin. Wouldn't it make sense that they would be of similar form and not completly different styles?
The movie Glamdring just doesn't seem Elven even with the leaf blade design, all the other Elven weopons are more... well Elven
The movie Glamdring is a fine looking sword but way off the mark if they were going for a sword of Elven make.
Narsil fits but IMHO Glamdring was botched

It can be explained by different ages, as looking at swords in our history we can easily see how often form follows function and they evolve over time. However, I think it is more likely a matter of choice made for the movie. A 'human' - i.e. Gandalf (after all they don't really explain the Istari at all) should be wielding a human weapon, rather than an elven one. To do otherwise would probably require screen time to expalin it - screen time they couldn't afford. Just like they never show Glamdring glowing in the presese of the orcs, it's probably not worth the screen time to expalin it to keep the movie under three hours.

I agree with your reason for the movie but not so much for the different ages thing, It doesn't seem Gondolin wasn't around very long ( in Elven terms) for the styles to be that drastic, going from a basic two edge leaf blade to a single edged curved blade with intricate design work. The Elves seemed to develope things rather slowly...

Hmm....Glamdring is a Noldorian sword.....perhaps Hadhafang was crafted by Sindarin smiths living in Gondolin?

The Elves seemed to develope things rather slowly...
on what do you base that assumption?.......i would say that being immortal means that its very likely that there would be many styles current at any time as regards weaponry with the Elvish peoples....
A: because they have a long background of material to draw from, human, Dwarvish and Elvish styles, and
B: because they ARE so long lived, that they would all have thier own aesthetic sense
I would agree that changes seem to happen rather slowly in the Elvish culture, but this is more because once a particular style is shown to work, a long lived culture would probably simply refine it, rather than create a whole new style.........but that also means that there would be many styles from different periods current at any one time..........quite aside from this, there is the fact that personal weapons reflect the individuals tastes.
