I got through Wizard's First Rule and the Stone of Tears last year. Good stories, good writing, good characters. I thought the ends of both books were wrapped up rather quickly but both were well worth reading. There's a lot of information and detail in both books similar to the virtual world of LotR. I can actually imagine that Goodkind took some of the premise in LoTR in how there's an underworld (where Sauron and the nazgul existed, if you will) and two different types of magic, light and dark, among other things and then ran with the ball. I'd give him an A for effort and A- overall.

Cheers,
Herefara

I've read it and it has become one of my favourites. The parts about transformation of Richard's personality astonish me every time I read it.
However, I found the second book (Stone of Tears) not so fascinating as the first one, but it's not bad, either ;)
(And here comes the third book, I'm unable to keep step with publishers verymad )

I've finally read it and it was amazing! He had the balance of description and conversation perfect so that you could picure everything clearly in your head and hear the characters speaking. truely amazing! Aranel has loaned me the second one but I haven't had time to start it yet.

I just started this series at the beginning of last summer and all I can say is that it's fantastic! Sure it has it's subtleties and mabey a little questionable material but what fan/fic doesn't? It's pretty intense during the first few books. I'm in the middle of Faith of the Fallen so I'm not going to give my opinion on the entire series as a whole but from what I've read so far, it's awesome, haven't been dissapointed a bit. Wizard's First Rule hooked me within the first few chapters. The beginning of FotF is a little depressing, but it's starting to pick up again, and once you realize the emphasis Goodkind puts on the "big picture" of things you can understand the correllation.

i do like the fact that the books link to a big picture but they don't leave you on tenter hooks waiting for the next one. It means I can read some other stuff in between thats a little more light hearted lol

He at least gives you some closure in the story up to the point of the end of the book. Even thought he is expanding the story and new things are appearing, he still manages to neatly tie up some loose ends, so you are at least able to follow the threads.. unlike RJ, who seems to have lost not only himself, but everyone following too!

Precisely my train of thought Elendur! RJ started strong, but has kind of receeded into a mire of monotonous prolonging. Don't get me wrong, it's a good series, but I do wish he would just finish the blasted thing. Before we know it, he'll die on us and leave the project unfinished.

However, in my opinion, Goodkind's Sword of Truth is marginably superior to the WoT. I stayed up until 5:00 AM last night reading Faith of the Fallen, I just couldn't put it down. I excpect to finish it today and hurriedly snatch the next book! Goodkind always leaves a purpose in his books and, unlike RJ, always accomplishes something in each novel attributing to the overall storyline.

Sometimes after reading some of RJ's, you feel like nothing has really happened and you're still in the same situation as when you began. I always feel like I'm progressing in Goodkind's books.

Hey everyone!

I discovered this series about 6 years ago and just love it!

I also like the way Goodkind carries on his story so that you don't feel like you're always in the same place. It's also quite an interesting blend of fantasy and social commentary. One of the best things for me is the honesty of Richard's character. He doesn't just stride on set and lead, he questions everything and is not afraid to be wrong. Looking forward to the next one... I read someplace that he signed up to do 10 of these, so I guess it will be the next-to-last.

Yes I like Richard's character. When i first started reading it I was sat there thinking "finally a good guy I like" most main characters in books just annoy me :(

Tho I seriously was disappointed with the Pillars of the Earth (the most recent novel I've read, my apologies lol)...I fell head over heels in love with the character of Richard Rahl from the beginning, the depth and conflict Goodkind created truly felt masterful. Really a wonderful series, I was so happy to finally come across a modern fantasy series that I could truly claim as my own

wow...just looked at some horrible reviews for Naked Empire, still worthwhile you think?

I am not a great fan of critics... there name just suggests that they have to criticise something to earn their daily bread!
I found Naked Empire good but I have had no problems with all the books so far.. sometimes slow getting started but end up fine!!

I'm sure I'll get there in the end. I borrow them off Aranel when she's finished. I've been doing lighter reading during term time though.

I was so happy to finally come across a modern fantasy series that I could truly claim as my own I feel the same way. I just finished reading a trilogy of books by Carol Berg - I'll put more about it in the other thread, but her books gave me the same feeling.

You're sooo right Elendur! lol I read some negative reviews as well, but I still enjoyed it. Goodkind doesn't disappoint. And there's always an interesting turn of events.

I've read all of them, except the latest one, Naked Empire. The series started out excellent and the characterization (notably Richard) and descriptions (especially of the different "modes" of magic) were extremely vivid . However, Pillars of Creation disappointed me greatly because of the lack of any substantial content. It felt even worse than RJ on a bad day... so i'm going to stay off the series unless the next book (#9) is good. But don't mistake me: the other books (1-6) are all very interesting.

I picked these up at Ronin's suggestion, and I'm loving them. I've read the first four and am working my way throught #5 right now. I think Goodkind does a good job of keeping the details interesting without being too much. I also love the characters, but I'm mad that Chase has disapeared.

yeah, he writes much faster than RJ. The Sword of Truth series was started later but it's steadily catching up with RJ in terms of number of books. And Goodkind's books do have some kind of ending, while Jordan seems to plod on and on towards Rand's uncertain destiny (at least i hope the books do lead somewhere), leaving us on tenterhooks between books.

Goodkind does do a good job of ending the book without ending the series, a tricky thing to do sometimes.

I was able to read the first one. finally, I absolutely loved it, I got in quite a bit of trouble for not being able to put it down. I am now reading the second one, and love it as much as I loved the first.

my main problem is that I read before I go to sleep and some of the stuff in those books I'd rather I had read during the daylight and not when it's likely to sneak into my dreams. I still love the books though :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just re-read Wizard's First Rule and the whole Mord-Sith thing bothered me a bit. It did the first time too, but after having been introduced to Cara in the later books it bothered me more to see what the Mord-Sith were like under Darken Rahl. Definitly not good night-time reading.

Have you read Faith of the Fallen yet? It's my favorite- I love how Richard evolves in it. Goodkind has developed his characters so well that Richard can deliver some lines that in the hands of a less skilled author would be horribly cheesy, but from Richard, it works.

I'm re-reading it now- I jumped from #1 to #6 because it is so wonderful. Read fast so you can get to it soon, but it won't be meaningful unless you read them all, not that I thought you might skip some ;)
