Given that Gandalf has fireworks, I lean towards blackpowder over any other option

I would have to say a Magic / chemical / alchemical combination would be the trick. See black powder and what-not can do neat things by themsleves. But combine explosives with magic and great things can happen!! :p

I think thaty it is chemical, and it sort of represents that saruman was taken away from the light (good magic) and to evil )(chemicals).

I reckon Black Powder or other chemical explosive. Though remember Gandalf's affinity with fire was due to his ring too.
