Yet I pity him because of what the One Ring did to him. How it "poisoned his mind" as it were, and turned him into a malevolent, semblant creature.

Hmm..so many threads to read through. You might say I pity Smeagol, but as for Gollum, I have to give him credits for being the devious little sneak who kept Smeagol alive.

I find him one of the best characters, being that because of his nature and how he talks to himself, the reader gets to see into what's going on in his .. er.. THEIR.. minds.

Something I loved that was done in the films, however subtle it was; is that Andy Serkis does this "solilloque" (OMG I bet I misspelled it) where he's debating between Gollum and Smeagol, but in several instances stares right into the camera. You might say he "breaks the plane" between character and audience, a wee little trick that helps the audience empathise and connect with a particular character.

Yeah.. and his cuteness is a factor too.

I felt in the end that Smeagol got a raw deal. Corrupted by the Ring, killed his best friend through the Ring's treachery, ran out of his home, a lousy life he led, cheated (yes) by Bilbo, tortured by the forces of Mordor, imprisoned by the elves, mistrusted in spite of his efforts by Sam, and ultimately done in by the Ring.

The whole split personalities thing made me pity Gollum soo much. Poor little demented guy! But I actually fell in love with his vocal ability: "the rock and pool is nice and cool, so nice for feeeeeet. Our only wish, to catch a fish, so juicy sweeeeet!" as he smacks a fish to death on a rock. What's not to love?

The one thing i really like about the new line movies is how they made Gollum(besides the teeth thing hes almost what I thought what he looked like)and how he was so eager to please Frodo and Sam (the stupid fat hobbit ruins nice fish )I find myself trying to please others and i some times look like a dog INFACT my nick name is Cujo like the dog from Steven King but thats a long story on how i got the name.

OK, yes Gollum had a horrible life and should be pitied somewhat, but that does not give him an excuse to try and take the ring for himself. Thats just selfish and he is a traitorous fool who completely lied to Sam and Frodo and only showed them to Mordor to get the ring from Frodo and not let him destroy it. Frodo was doing the right thing and Gollum didnt care about anything but himself. Selfishness and dishonesty are not things to be pitied no matter how bad off someone is.

but it wasn't really his fault! it was the ring that made him so possessed and try to take it back. the ring took over his mind. i feel bad for him because he tried to defeat the possessed side of him, but it was too strong.

It all seems to boil down to the question, "Was Gollum inherrently evil?"

I don't think so. Very few things in Middle-Earth were truly evil.. most of those things were the direct work of Morgoth's or Sauron's magick.

Gandalf believed Gollum was able to be saved. The Elves of Mirkwood had at least an inkling of faith in the "cure", and Frodo put in a most noble effort on his behalf..but Gollum was in the end led to his final destiny mostly by the evildoing of Sauron which Frodo, the Elves and Gandalf had tried so hard to undo..but what (IMNSHO) put him over the edge was Sam's continual prejudices and harsh treatment.

In the RoTK..right at the Steps of Cirith Ungol, Sam had one last chance...and he blew it. I think you who have read the book know the bit I'm on about.... and I only HOPE the film does that scene justice.

I have a great deal of faith in Andy Serkis to do it right.

Let's be honest here folks... how many of you OPENLY AND PROUDLY admit that you LOVED Gollum BEFORE Weta made him what he is known as today. How many of you loved him when he was in The Hobbit.... before you even read LoTR..and before Weta ever existed?

I always felt bad for him but I can't honestly say I pitied him untill I saw the movie, it's true.

While we are discussing the style of the Hobbit, I just read "smith of wooton major" and "farmer giles of ham" by Tolkien and they were very similar to the Hobbit, not dense at all. I recomend them as a quick fun read. ;)
