My love for Frodo's role got confused with the dude playing the part, Elijah Wood. Let's face it, Lij has been gifted with beautiful eyes and a talent for using them. He has also played many adorable roles very well in his younger life. But most appealing to me, he has managed to remain fairly down-to-earth, liking himself as the geeky, romantic, Staw Wars, computer nut, family guy he is. This LOTR experience has been like a college dorm bash and an albatross to him. He enjoyed some much-needed male commraderie But now the crazed fans have begun to effect his lifestyle. I'm sure he is anxious to move on with his career.
And I think we should let him. Elijah Wood truly is not Frodo. There have been other depictions of Tolkien's character and there will be more in the future. Elwood did a fabulous job, he should be proud of his work and the contribution he made toward bring Tolkien's work back into the limelight. Frodo is an essential character to the plot, but not able to save Middle-earth on his own. Frodos companions Sam, Gandalf, Gollum, et. al. cannot be separated from Frodo by any Tokian enthusiast.

Josh Hartnett is quite cute. To me he looks like a very young Tommy Lee Jones (come to think of it, so does my husband). Wow -- nice to see an Elijah thread, instead of all that drool over Orlando/Leggy! Not that he's not a babe too -- he's just not Frolijah.

Oh girls, it's just awful....I'm old enough to be his mother....and I can't stop watching that darned FOTR DVD and going out of my mind over those eyes, that skin, those features. I find myself saying, "Look at that face!" Oh man....pathetic! It's a good thing I'm NOT 20 years younger -- then I'd really be in trouble!

But it's more than just his physical appeal, I think. It's his acting, and what he does with nothing more than just a look. Those scenes where he cries (after Moria and on the beach, at the end) tear my heart out every time. He was robbed for the Oscar last year. He should have gotten it for those scenes alone.

One thing I noticed that my pal Ludibunda pointed out to me (with Whynni's fabulous Falling video) and that I never noticed before, is the amount of times he falls down in FOTR. I counted last night -- 13! lol Poor baby must've been all black and blue after they got finished filming this movie!

So you can bet that Return of the King, and the scenes in Shelob's lair and at the Cracks of Doom are going to be simply awesome!!!!! It's going to be hard to wait until December!

Looks like you're not the only one, Achila. I'm hitting a BIG birthday next month and I feel like a dirty old lady! Beyond that, I'm married and have 2 kids so I feel like I'm having an affair with several men! :naughty: :naughty: I wait until everyone's gone to bed then I sneak into the livingroom to watch the extended DVD.

I remember so well sitting in the theatre the year before last as the screen went dark and the prologue came up, nearly crying with happiness because I so loved the books and the story, and was so thrilled that someone had made this movie (I couldn't even begin to know just how thrilled I'd be at that point!). Little did I know, a couple of years later, I'd be writing in to forums and searching for fanfic, etc. I'm having a ball!

As for the name "Frolijah" -- I can't take credit for it. I saw it on here before, I think. But I think it's great.

One of my friends made the comment that she hoped Elijah wouldn't get saddled with being Frodo all his life, to the detriment of his career. I think he's versatile enough to transcend that, although right now, it's hard to imagine him actually being better than he is in LOTR!

Have you guys seen the fan fic? Some of it is truly nasty -- personally the idea of Frodo and Sam "together" doesn't do much for me....while some of the others....well, let's just say....:drool:

I don't have any problems with it, per se -- it's someone's imagination and that's fine, and some of it is extremely well written (and I'm not kidding) -- there are some real gems out there. It's just that the idea of Frodo and Sam doesn't do anything for me (plus, Sean Astin (as Sam especially) is not my idea of a hunk).

I kind of have to laugh, to think that all these masculine characters with their noble, high ideals are imagined as nothing more than sex maniacs. To tell the truth, I would have NEVER thought of Frodo and Sam in that way, just because there CAN be love between friends that has nothing sexual about it.

Re: gay fanfics -- I'm sure that part of the reason LOTR has attracted this is that there are so few women to pair all these handsome men with...so some people have used the men to work out their romantic fantasies. Some of the pairings are especially nasty, but Legolas and Frodo??....hmm......lol

But it's not making fun of anyone -- it's all in the perception. Everyone who writes this stuff utterly loves the trilogy and the characters -- you can tell.

I have seen this many times, me being so intense on the fanfic world. Gay fanfic is a wrong term to use, because the characters are not intended to be gay.. but... erm, perhaps this is not the place to discuss such a thing, eg? The term used for this is Slash, btw.

I even have friends who write it, and they are very much in love with the trilogy. They do not take their writing seriously either...

I watched FOTR again last night and those eyes hit me every time -- they almost look like shiny glass marbles in some scenes. Some of it has to do with the eyelights they use, I think.

Y'know -- eyes, in general, are beautiful...and then there are extraordinary eyes like his.....just unbelievable.

On the FOTR DVD cast commentary, Sean Astin actually said something about his daughter asking about Elijah's eyes, and if they were "real" or enhanced in some way. When Elijah said that others have also asked if that's their real color (and not colored contacts), Sean said, "No, not the color -- the size." Pretty amazing when another guy realizes it too! lol

But as someone else said a few posts ago, it's what he does with those eyes that makes them even more incredible. Two scenes especially come to mind -- first, the scene on the beach at the end of FOTR. How brave of PJ to do that entire shot with just Frodo's face filling the screen, with tears streaming down his cheeks. With any other actor, it would just be a beautiful boy crying. But you can read every emotion in Elijah's face and in his eyes, particularly when he remembers Gandalf's voice, and because of that, you feel deeply what he feels.

Second, there's the scene in TT with Sam in Osgiliath, when Frodo turns on him. The intensity in his eyes is totally scary and believable, and you know then and there that the ring is truly beginning to take hold of Frodo. Amazing performance!

It's amazing that Elijah doesn't have to say a word, and yet it is perfectly understood what he expresses with his eyes! Did any of you realize that Frodo doesn't say a word for about ten minutes after the fall of Gandalf in Moria until Galadriel's mirror ("What will I see?"). He is constantly on the screen in the meantime and you can see EVERY emotion on his face. And that makes it so touching in my eyes. :)

That's true, Frodo's Love -- I never realized that before -- thanks for pointing that out! Of course, the other scene I didn't mention earlier was during that sequence -- when the Fellowship comes out onto Dimril Dale after Moria, and Frodo turns so that you can see the grief on his face. PJ's direction to him at that point was "Make it frightening," and he does. He's not really crying there -- he's shocked and numb to the point of not being able to, I think -- but the pain in his eyes knocks the breath out of me every time.

Imagine having someone like this around all the time (OK, OK -- calm down, girls)?? You'd never be able to stay angry at him, never get anything done -- all he'd have to do is look at you the right way and you'd totally melt! lol

That is true, FL!!! I'm sure I knew he didn't speak at all, but I never let it sink in... it is almost as if he we can hear what he's thinking.

Oh, and Achila! I agree, that when Frodo turns on Sam in Osgiliath is an excellent example of the expression shown in his eyes.

There's also when Sam and Frodo fight, I love not only Frodo's eye expression, but facial, bodily actions such as the snear of his upper lip when Sam says 'You can't take your eyes off it.' Everything is so perfect. I am amazed. I would be so honered to meet him and just ask him how he does it, what he thinks of etc.

With his very white, flawless skin and the rest of his features -- big eyes, perfect, straight nose, little pouty mouth, well-defined jaw and slightly cleft chin -- his face looks like something you'd see on a Greek statue. It's unbelievable.

All I keep thinking of is the upcoming scene in ROTK, of him laying in Barad'dur, half dead and being tortured by the orcs -- don't know how I'll stand it! I can just see me now, screaming in the theater: NO!!! Get away from him!!!

William Blake 1757-1827, was an English poet, artist, engraver, and publisher (remember the poem: Tyger, tyger burning bright, in the forests of the night...? That's Blake). He did many paintings of angels, which is what the review is talking about.

And as for the eyes -- I think he meant almond shaped, not the color.

I did something really bad last night...I went in search of more movie reviews -- until 3AM! A couple of the ones I found were less than complimentary to our Frolijah, and that only served to make me furious. One even actually dared to suggest that he take acting lessons! It was a review for TTT, where, admittedly, he has less of an emotional range to portray than in FOTR, because of where we are in the overall story. It called his performance "wearisome" -- as if.verymad pfbbt :angry:

It seems something like that is written because of jealousy of simply because of having no idea what the essence of playing Frodo is all about. What Frodo's *character* is about; the depth and his luminous soul. A sensitive and gentle being, wise and respectful.

The comment came mostly because of what Elijah has to do in TTT -- it's more of a "one note" performance because of what's happening to Frodo during this part of the story. But you can't tell me his scenes fighting with Sam are wearisome -- it's amazing how intense he gets. And I've heard that there was even more aggression in the scene, which we'll probably see in the EE DVD.

These subtle emotions are so extremely well shown! I've said it before, but it's his way of speaking with his eyes without saying a word. He made Frodo become alive, and we can see all of Frodo's emotions easily. To act like that is a gift...

Unfortunately, MAD isn't the only one. Any of you see the French and Saunders spoof of Lord of the Rings? Frodo (Dawn French) has ping pong (or, as our British friends call it, table tennis) balls for eyes. There's only one thing I've noticed, but I wouldn't call it strange -- they've definitely become bluer. If you watch any of his earlier movies, they've never been this blue before.

It's probably human nature to think anything that's wonderful and rare couldn't be real. So that reporter I mentioned was shocked to find out that they are, indeed, real.

The one thing that's truly fascinating about Flipper is how he could play so "against type" that effectively at 15 -- a sullen city kid who doesn't want to be where's he's sent. Knowing everything we know about 'Lij, this persona couldn't be further from reality, but I sure did find myself wanting to reach into the TV, grab him by the shoulder and yell "Oh, grow up already!" Apparently, though, based on LOTR, it appears that sad and tormented suit him far better lol

Probably his best one was The War (JMHO, of course), -- he even got top billing above Kevin Costner. To see him at 13 is to understand what he was going to become when he got a little older.

Actually, it IS sort of significant -- it gives rise to Sam saying, "Now Mr. Frodo, you can't go walking around in Mordor in naught but your skin," or words to that effect. It sets up the overall abuse he gets at the hands of the orcs.

We've been discussing this issue on another group I'm on, and some have pointed out that there have been other movies rated PG-13 that do have a bit of skin shown, especially the um...male ASSet. So we'll see.

My guess is that probably at some point in May, the trailer will start showing up in theaters -- once that's out, the official LOTR site will get it online, and then we'll have it too.

Yes, you can thank Josh Hartnett for that....grrr....but interestingly, he smokes clove cigarettes, that come from Indonesia. A smoker friend of mine told me that a lot of people smoked those in the 60s. I did see something somewhere that Lij was rumored to have quit -- we'll see.

No, I don't think they swallow them (and btw, stopping that was his New Year's resolution -- so again, we'll see).

I wonder if the fact that our gang is busy making ROTK is the reason the TT DVD isn't coming out until August. Don't know what they'd have to do with it though -- I would think that's up to New Line. I have heard that the EE DVD is finished, tho, and we won't see that until November.

Yellowed fingernails is the result of holding cigarettes. some of the chemicals in the cigarette gets onto the fingernails I think. Its the same stuff that makes your teeth yellow.
