Hi there and hello.

Just a quick thing. I wondered if anyone else was going to use the new fanfic section :( (www.warofthering.net/fanfic)?

It's just that it seems that Lalaith and I are the only ones to post there so far when 11 authors have signed up for it. There are some great features such as adding and editing your chapters to keep it nice and tidy and correct mistakes (don't know about you but I have lots of those) and it keeps the reviews and comments separate so as not to get in the way of the fic etc etc.

So come on people! Shift your stories onto the new bit. It's so lonely over there without you!....

A.L.L.

Couldn't have put it better A.L.L!

Am officially supporting this push to use the fanfic section! C'mon people! You all have some excellent stories - why not put them up over there???

It is getting lonely over there... mecry *sniff*mecry

Thanks for that Lalaith!

It's like collecting for charity in Antarctica at the moment. Please give your stories generously and tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell anyone!

Please! Just one small chapter is enough to satisfy a legion of fanfiction-fans for months! Well, ok, about a day... but still!!

Go out onto the streets! Spread the word!!

It's for the greater good!!!

I think I will add something to that effect to my signature!

Aragorn's Latest Lay

I fine plan

Proud supporter of the fanfic section stories appeal : One chapter a week can feed a braying pack of hyena-readers. Please give generously and give a new-born section a chance. We live in a world of fear and suspicion. Let us together, bring a little joy and happiness to the lives of others.

Something like that?

Ai! AI! A nail studded dwarf has come! Truly terrifying! :p

Almost as terrifying as Gandalf when he has run out of the Halfling's weed...

Which I would not hesitate to inflict on those who do not contribute to the fanfic section!

March 4th,2003, 08:45 PM
btw ED ta muchly for your contributions to the section. i saw you put up another. Great stuff. I'll review it properly when there's a bit more there.

Until then, take note you liley livered cads out there (you know who you are!) that we now have three authors published on the section.

We need more. Lots more. Lets have a bit of quality AND quantity. I see it every day! You update your fics on the threads when you could easily transfer your old chapters and update it on the section. Just leave a link message on the forum and leave the thread open so as to leave messages or notices or other such stuff! It's really that simple!

Give it a try. ED did. And so can you! As Kenny Everett once said...

Up, Up and Oy Vey!

Elbereth
March 4th,2003, 09:01 PM
err... can someone tell me what kind of guidelines there are for the content of fics - I know PG but I don't know exactly how that applies to fic content.
I would submit something but all I have is a handful of dire ideas and some hideous fics that are probably not fit for human consumption due to complete loss of character, mad ideas, lack of grammer and terrible spelling. All topped off by the fact that most was written under the influence of large doses of sugar. :p
Are you supposed to post stories in the fan fiction forum first or just post in the new section???

Aragorn's Latest Lay
March 4th,2003, 09:07 PM
Actually Elbereth, in the new fic section at www.warofthering.net/fanfic you can have anything up to NC-17 provided that you actually label it as such.

If you have any concerns or need any information about what the guidelines are or what is considered acceptable try a PM to Fatty. I think he is dealing with things like that.

;)
A.L.L.

Elfdaughter
March 5th,2003, 11:27 AM
Yeah, I'm just being careful. PG if it has mild swearing in, or violent scenes, or U if it's OK for young children to see.

Aragorn's Latest Lay
March 5th,2003, 11:31 AM
Me too... although now that we have the new age-ratings perhaps we could be a little more in the way of ... adventurous?

I don't mean a torrent of abusive or disturbing images or anything like that! God no! Just a little less PG like in our handling of the subject...

Ok even I'm not sure what I mean but hey! Nothing new there right? ;)

Aragorn's Latest Lay

Are you supposed to post stories in the fan fiction forum first or just post in the new section???

Just post straight to the new section. As there seem to be a fair few who don't know the new section is there however, it may be wise to start a thread in the forum to let people know it is there.

I will be trying to give as many updates as possible through this thread but I am not a moderator or anything (just a concerned citizen) so you should probably be doing this yourself. Actually you could just use this thread to advertise your fics and stuff, that way everyone who reads it will know what you have done and whether there have been any updates.

Hmmm, perhaps I should post a new thread asking people to read this thread?

Nah! That would just be silly

Hope that answers your question Elbereth

Elbereth
March 5th,2003, 08:07 PM
Thanks a lot ALL - I will try and write something fit to post soon.

every time I try and write something all my characters go wrong and won't do what I say, even to the point of falling in love with the wrong people (sorry but Haldir just went and fell in love with someone who's not even female. It was not my fault (I have nothing against same sex relationships but that was a really inconvenient time for him to do that)). That's why I think most of what I write should just be kept away from anyone remotely sane.

Oh dear, I really am rambling a load of nonsense  Perhaps you should just ignore this whole post. I really need more sleep, or less chocolate. Either has the same effect.

hey I'm really sorry about this post

Aragorn's Latest Lay
March 5th,2003, 08:12 PM
I don't know anyone here who is remotely sane (I assume you haven't read anything I've written if you think that). Feel free.

Besides my fics have a lot of same-sex couples in them. Just the way it goes.

So tell me more about this Haldir thing? Sounds interesting ;).....

oh, yes, and stop apologising for posts. Only apologise if you get rumbled for something! roflmao

Elfdaughter
March 5th,2003, 09:00 PM
Not that we would DO anything, you understand...... lol!

Lalaith
March 5th,2003, 10:46 PM
Hmmmm - I don't know anyone here who is remotely sane

I would act all insulted.... but I kinda see your point! :p

And as for people falling in love with the wrong people! Tell me about it! I accidentally broke someone's heart in one of my stories... And I honestly didn't mean for that to happen! Although, it did pave the way for some fun angsty writing!!

Aragorn's Latest Lay
March 5th,2003, 11:54 PM
Come now Lalaith! You can't tell me that you don't have a screw loose somewhere?

I do, ED does, no-one is perfect.

I still don't know any totally sane people. Who knows perhaps everyone else is insane and we are the sane ones? Wouldn't that be freaky??@?@?

;)
A.L.L.

Lalaith
March 6th,2003, 12:00 AM
Indeed, maybe we are the sane ones... the voices of wisdom and reason...consistency in a world gone mad...

Do I sound convinced?? :p

Ah, sure, sanity is an overrated commodity anyway!

March 6th,2003, 12:28 AM
Folks glad to see you are making a great effort to get it populated and used. I will start advertising it and get it into the main navigation soon. I still need two admins just to edit and check stuff as submitted.

With ratings I think also put the rating in the title as it is very small. I think stay in the boundaries of taste and nothing offensive or potentially so. But you can certainly be a little more adult than in the forum as they are labelled. But I would be wary, we will see how it goes with any complaints etc.

Thanks

James aka Fatty

Pil
March 6th,2003, 09:29 AM
Thanks Fatty for clearing that up for us. Indeed, don't go too adult cos the site is generally PG and even though the ratings are there it would still be nice to try to keep the stpries at a rating that most people would be happy to read. :) As Fatty says, we'll see how people react to the section and go from there. Thanks Fatty for making this for us and thanks everyone who is posting their story in the section. :read:

I will try to stop apologising - It is quite compulsive and I know people are always telling me not to (I usually end up apologising for apologising)

About the Haldir thing. My friend and I were acting out the death scene (as you do) and we worked out that he wouldn't necessarily die. so I'm trying to write about how he survives. By taking dreadful liberties with the plot he ended up in Rivendell and fell in love with someone.
Unfortunatly my computor broke so I have temporarily lost most of the beginning, the parts before LOTR and the fellowship arriving in Lorien. Hopefully I will get those bits back soon. It has turned into more of a saga about his life from joining the guards of Lorien onwards to the time when Legolas leaves Middle-Earth (or at least that's what I planned)

If anyone is interested I will post it but I don't think I have much technical writing skill to work on (I never tried to write a fic more than I side of paper before!)

Keverzwijn
March 7th,2003, 12:52 AM
i'll post sometinh there as soon as I can translate y stories. But they're not Tolkien inspired, just things that come up in my mind.

Elfdaughter
March 7th,2003, 10:58 AM
That's OK, Kev...you can post them up in the other sections...'In the Dragon's sight' isn't really Tolkien inspired either, nor are the other three I've posted up.

Well I'm interested. Many of the people who have started putting fics up on the boards have confessed that this is the first time they have tried it. Have faith in yourself Elbereth!

If you don't try, you will never know. And neither will we. So best foot forward, pen in hand (actually keyboard would be more effective) and let's see what you are made of ey?

Actually, the synopsis of the Haldir etc storyline you have just described sounds like a brilliant start. Don't give up before you have even begun.

Good luck and happy writing! :)

Stilll, in less than a week I will be free and back on the boards - and there will be new fanfictions!! Yes! Sequels will be written!

And Elbereth - definitely post your story!! I was really nervous about posting fanfic before I came here (basically cos I thought fanfic writers were crazed lunatics... and then I became one and realised it was true!)

Aragorn's Latest Lay
March 7th,2003, 06:06 PM
lol of course it's true I mean look around you!

OK and thanks - I'll post the fic about Haldir as soon as I get my computor back and have a chance to proof read what I've written (should get the PC back tomorrow with luck)

By the way - does anyone have rules/guidelines as to how we decide what ratig to give the fics or how the ratings are given?

ok - my plan for the fanfic section is to set up a thread here where I will tell people about updates, and respond to any reviews (which will, of course, be posted in the fanfic section!) and field any questions... In fact, I will start posting tomorrow, cos I'm in a good mood and it's almost a whole week till my next (and final) exam!

Thanks for your review of 'for the love of a Marchwarden'. I hope you won't mind when it starts to diverge from canon in later chapters. I'm trying to keep everything possible with time scale, characters and blank spaces in the narrative but some parts don't have the same feel as LOTR and there are same sex relationships (I tried to stick to the LOTR events but it got a little deviated) which I don't think Tolkien intended!

Just in answer to the question in your review, Gatsby, in 'Shadow and Flame...' Glorfindel is talking to Elrohir - but you'll have to wait until the sequel (which I will start posting tomorrow, entitled Bliss in Valinor) to find out the full story!

And Elbereth - with regards to canon - If it's done well, AU can be the most rewarding sort of fanfic! I mean, I gave Gil-galad a wife! Can't really get much more out of canon... I do look forward to more!

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but here I go, (and I apologize ahead of time if this is not in the right place :) )

I'm wanting to write a fanfic soooo bad, especially after reading all of your wonderful stories, but I'm having a hard time developing my ideas. Could you guys offer some tips, or tell me where there are tips in this forum? I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid that my writing will be terrible, but anyway.....I digress. Anybody have any pointers?

Lalaith
March 14th,2003, 12:41 AM
Hmmm, difficult!

Ok, what you need to do is decide whether there is a specific era you are interested in? First Age, Third Age or maybe Fourth Age, when you would have a free-er reign, so to speak. What characters are your favourite? Who do you relate to most? Are you a hobbit-gal or an elf-chick? Try to write a character bio... it may give you ideas - and remember Middle Earth is a big place -you are bound to find somewhere you and your stories fit in!

Elceleb
March 14th,2003, 12:43 AM
It also helps just to write, even if you don't end up sharing it. My writing skills improved tremendously simply by taking the time to write (even if my work wasn't great ) The point is that you learn from it. :)

And, so that A. L. L. will be happy: I registered and put up a story today under Fantasy - Adventure ;)

Celebrían
March 14th,2003, 01:07 AM
Thanks so much, you guys! notworthy You really don't know how much that helps. I think I was (and truth be told still am) a little intimidated by all of the details that I've seen in other stories. I've read LOTR and am re-reading it right now, but haven't read "Silmarillion", yet ( I want, but won't get the time till the summer :( ). I guess I was feeling like I would have to read that before I wrote, so that I could put a lot of detail into my story, but from what you guys are saying, maybe not. ;) Anyway, thanks so much for the advice ( YOU GUYS ROCK !!!), if anybody else has some, I'd love to hear it!

Elceleb
March 14th,2003, 04:23 AM
Whether you need to have read the Sil is rather dependant on the time in which you choose to set your story, however, the Sil provides excellent background to a lot of LOTR. I'm currently re-reading LOTR after having read the Sil and I'm constantly amazed at how much better I understand everything. I highly recommend the book whether you read it before or after writing.

Glad to have been some help. Let me know if there's anything else I can do :)

Celebrían
March 14th,2003, 04:49 AM
No, thank you! I DO want to read the Sil, but unfortunately I will be VERY busy over the next couple of months, and won't get much time for pleasure reading :( ,but I'll probably go ahead and get it anyway. I've been DYING to get it, in fact, maybe I'll go get it tomorrow. :)

Aragorn's Latest Lay

Hey Celebrian!

If you want to find loadsa detail and look dead big and clever (huge clue that I have not yet used this much) try looking here : http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/ at the Encycolpedia of Arda. Full of geography, characters (even ones Tolkien decided not to use) and places, peoples, races, history of everything we currently know about Middle Earth.

If you can't find a story in there somewhere then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Oh and that reminds me, Lalaith, there is nothing unfortunate about the flowing of your muse....

Hope this site is a little bit helpful, but i really must dash. My nephew wants a banana....

A.L.L.

Elfdaughter
March 14th,2003, 11:32 AM
lol! Hey, listen, When I wrote my first novel, it was basically a rewrite of LOTR. Then I kept writing, and developing my own style. So, just write, Cel. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but it'll help you discover your own style. Then you can post up in the fanfic section!

Lalaith
March 14th,2003, 12:08 PM
Elfdaughter - my first complete fanfiction was basically the story of the War of the Ring too, except told from the point of view of the Elves who were just lazing around Rivendell. Having a structured plot to work from can be very helpful when you are just starting out!

A.L.L. - flowing muses can be very dangerous especially when one is trying to study for finals - but hey! I'm nearly finished those exams so, when all is behind me, i will unleash my muse... Caution - low-flying muses!

Celebrian - glad we could help. Detail is important but you can start really simply... the link the A.L.L gave is great - I have been known to use it when the books just aren't talking to me!! And if you ever have a query, just ask! There are enough Tolkien nuts here - one is bound to be able to help (and yes, i include myself in the category of Tolkien nut. Or possibly just nut.) Don't worry about rushing through Sil - it is a truly fantastic book and is well worth taking your time over! Unfortunately, I have now started exploring the HoME series - so I will probably just confuse and contradict myself once I see just how many conflicting ideas JRRT threw around!

Finally, to whom it may concern! Both Elceleb and I have found that when you upload a story in the new section, italics just will not happen! It's not a major problem - it just means that I cannot italicise the Elvish I use and any "thought communication" I use has to be placed in between square parentheses - these yokies --> [ ] Does anyone have a solution? i have tried uploading as a HTML document, and while that allows italics, it also throws in some odd gibberish and seems to format the layout in a strange strange way...

Thanks for any help! :)

Lalaith

Aye, guilty as charged... And wild horses couldn't stop me - there will always be more...

Seriously, your reviews just overwhelm me - every time I see a nice review, I go all Hollywood- cliche ('They like me! They really like me!') but I will resist the urge to make an Oscar-style acceptance speech! lol

Got Elves?

This sounds like a great new slogan. I think I must use this. lol

You think that you guys are puddles!? I actually had huge puddles in my room today (stupid leaking radiator valve) but I'm an even bigger one now ;)

Thanks Lalaith (or should I say Nerdanel?) :p

lol I'm glad you liked it. :) I was afraid that nobody would get that. "Got Elves?" would actually make a funny t-shirt (at least I think so). Oh, and sorry about the puddles! I can sympathize, my house flooded last October...oh such fun...

Lalaith, I feel I must say what I am about to say in all honesty and so that our literary relationship can continue in the much the same vein as is has done this past age. So here goes...

I love your work and our little games and everything else you do with all my heart and mind. If, however, I ever see you trying to do Sally Fields impressions EVER again, I fear that our friendship will come a croper, much as her career did after that appalling oscar speech.

I thank you for your time and patience.

Dear A.L.L,

I trust that I am girl enought to take your comments in the spirit in which they were meant... :p

However, I would advise you to tread carefully, for I have the next chapter of Bliss in Valinor just itching to be posted... It is a mere mouse-click away... but, instead, I am going to go and watch the rest of the Arsenal match!

You brought it on yourself, my friend...

Love ya really,

As for the "Got Elves?" slogan, it's already being put to use on my lj:

New chapter of Marchwarden up!
very pleased - the internet has suddenly sorted itself out again.
Unfortunatly I forgot about italics/ different fonts not working - my apologies for any cofusion with the note at the end.

Please go read it someone
I have coursework to do - I need the encouragement :p

though, if you hapen to hate it, please be gentle and constructive in criticism or there may be dire consequences for the coursework and my chemistry teacher will not be happy!

And I love the 'Got Elves'

Elbereth
March 26th,2003, 12:21 AM
What were you expecting? Hope it was OK anyway. Battle of Helm's Deep approaching in fic. Battle with coursework/chemistry teacher approaching in real life.
Why can I never finish anything before the deadline?

Celebrían
March 26th,2003, 12:26 AM
Well, I don't want to say, because it would give it away for those who have not yet read it. :) For secrecy sake, I'll just say the way "you left it" (in other words the ending) ;)

Elbereth
March 26th,2003, 12:41 AM
Ah, the ending. yes.
I'm not quite sure where I got the ending from. I suspect it was archery lessons.
Not sure what to say about what will happen as I don't know what was expected but the plot takes a minor diversion back to Haldir for a while.
But then of course, this is movie Helm's Deep and Haldir becomes a magnet for axes!
Sorry - all I meant to say was please excuse the slightly odd ending all should be resolved in later chapters - or something along those lines.

I'm not really sure where to publicize this, but I've begun posting my story Gilrond's Children in the fanfic section from the beginning. As soon as I get all the chapters up, I will post my updates there, as well.

And I will run off to the fanfic section now, and peruse your stories, ED! :)

Also - hey A.L.L!! Thank you for the review!! Haven't seen you in ages ('seen' is of course to be used in the loosest sense of the word. I think I mean 'Use your livejournal more, A.L.L!!!!' ;):P )

Elbereth
April 1st,2003, 07:33 PM
Hi Lalaith - how was Barcelona? Loved Seafaring elfling!
New chpt of Marchwarden almost finished. I havn't been working on it for ages cos of mountain of homework high as Caradhras (too much chemistry, I can't spell any more or if I can it's fluke). Have also had to do biology MOCK without revising cos I was feeling ill the day before :(
the woes of real life!

Lalaith
April 1st,2003, 07:42 PM
Please. Don't mention Caradhras! I did a personality test on the net and apparently, of all Tolkien's villains... I am that stupid mountain! Inanimate and thick. Me to a T!

As for Barca - it was brilliant! Really had a wonderful time... Didn't develop a taste for sangria tho! ;) lol ;)

Elbereth
April 1st,2003, 07:46 PM
Hardly thick when you write things like Seafaring Elfling!

My apologies Mistress Lalaith. I shall try to use it more.

As you are the only one who reads it I felt I should await your return.

*spot to the poor excuse*

Actually I havent done much writing of anything other than my dissertation, not even a fanfic chapter (please slap my wrist and shout at me to get me moving on this).

Lalaith, thanks for all the reviews!! To answer your question about Fionnbarr, yes, I did get his name from the Celtic 'Fionn Barra' - 'fair head'. I'm really into all Celtic stuff...and I WILL write more, I promise - but my school work is PILING on top of me!!

Lalaith
April 3rd,2003, 12:58 PM
A.L.L - grovelling and cowering... I like it! And seriously, glad you liked The Seafaring Elfling - it still surprises me that I got so much feedback from it! Across four sites, I have gotten in the region of 20 reviews - for a piece that took about half an hour to write, it's ridiculous!! (Not that I'm complaining, of course)

Celebrían - don't worry - I always advertise my updates - I'm an attention-seeking junkie, you see! ;) I have a very angsty piece ready for posting, but due to 'puter problems, I won't be posting it till Saturday.

Elfdaughter - very cool about Fionnbarr - I used to live in Cork, where our patron saint is Fin Barre! Take your time with updates. Just not too much time! ;)

lol! poor A.L.L!! I've posted up a poem which could do as a lament for Haldir - 'The White Rider'.

Elbereth
April 3rd,2003, 09:05 PM
Sorry Cel, no updates.
Promise I will update on Friday or Saturday but at the moment I have to just get all the work done for tomorrow, LAST DAY OF TERM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry but I really need a holiday!
A teacher actually told me to go home today. She said I looked ill! Wasn't sure wether to be grateful that I had an excuse to go home, rather than spend 1 1/2 hrs after school doing extra Theology as we haven't yet finished the syllabus, or feel annoyed that she basically told me I looked ****!
Anyhow, moving on. New chapter soon, I promise.

Incidentally anyone other than Cel feel like reading and reviewing chpt 4 of Marchwarden? Anyone? (not that I don't appreciate Cel's reviews, far from it, but I think that that last sentence came out a bit wrong!) I too would class myself as an attention seeking junkie even though I don't deserve attention half as much as Lalaith does!

Also, I just rewatched LOTR and when you see the fellowship recieve the cloaks I think Haldir is the one who gives Legolas the cloak (although I could be wrong!) and next to him is a blonde female elf. Seems to fit with Marchwarden but I could just be getting a little too obsessed!

Celebrían
April 3rd,2003, 09:09 PM
No worries, El, I can sympathize with work piling up! Take a break, hon! :) The next time I watch FOTR, I'll look for the scene you are talikng about.

Elbereth
April 3rd,2003, 09:18 PM
Thanks Cel!
I just need to get some sort of understanding about the 'Normal Distribution' for statistics and then I will be fine.

I'm sure it is Haldir but then, I confess I find it difficult to tell. Some of the 'extra elves' are a little...strange looking! Rumil and Orophin especially.

I think I will take a break, a nice long holiday. Perhaps go and see some mountains again! lol
I think AS levels have given me a greater understanding of feeling like 'butter scrapped over too much bread'!

Celebrían
April 3rd,2003, 09:31 PM
lol Slip in LOTR quotes whenever possible-that's my philosophy! lol

Stats, huh? I took that last semester (and believe it or not, I actually enjoyed it. I had a really great prof.) I hope it goes well for you!

On another note, thanks to everyone who encouraged me and gave me pointers awhile back about writing. You have given me enough courage to finally start putting pen to paper. I'm really excited about it, although it's coming along rather slowly, at least it's coming! Thanks again, to everyone!

Elbereth
April 3rd,2003, 09:48 PM
What's it about? - I'd really like to see it.
Never mind speed. It's sure to be great
Have finally worked out problem with stats - slight confusion that a negative negative is positive! At least I'm hoping that was what was wrong!

Celebrían
April 3rd,2003, 10:11 PM
Glad you got your Stats worked out...

Well, to be honest, I haven't written enough about it to know what it's about, but I do know who it's about (if that made any sense  I still have a few ideas about where I want the story to go, and as of yet, haven't settled on one), and for now, let's just say it's about a rather "overlooked" character..... :) Right now, I'm constructing the "skeleton" of the story. The way it's working out, I'll write the major events and fill in details later......I hope it will come along! I'm really nervous (still excited, but also nervous)

Elbereth
April 3rd,2003, 10:25 PM
It sounds good even in abstract! I look forward to seeing it.
I like fics about 'overlooked' characters and don't be nervous, just go for being excited!
One question - man, elf or hobbit?
or orc for that matter?

Finally after much computer grief and an interesting collection of curses, some elvish some made up by my humble self on the spur of the moment, I have managed to post chapter 5 of Marchwarden. I swear there is something wrong with my computer, but seeing as I am the only person having problems I think I may just be me.
Please read and review - It is much appreciated and brings joy to the toil of revision (yes I know writing fic is hardly revision but let's just gloss over that for the moment)
To be honest I've had one heck of a day painting endless stretches of white walls with white paint and could really do with cheering up! Be mercifull!lol

Just going to go eat some more chocolate before I start writing poetry with a distinctly psycotic (is that spelt right? I haven't the faintest idea) theme (Galadriel's thoughts as she is tempted by the ring for example) :p Hey - I'm not at all crazy

Elbereth
April 8th,2003, 12:36 AM
Incidentally - sorry about double post - if I needed to clarify anything for the sake of the plot where should I do that or should I just let you work it out? I am one of those people who works everything out anyway just for the sake of it. I spent 30mins working out the command system of the Lorien Guard for example. Maybe I am obsessed!

Celebrían
