Are we allowed to create any Role Playing games here or is there specific guidelines or rules specifying that we can't? Can only administrators start an RP? I'm just curious.

Actually, I'm going to let you in on a little secret, there is some talk of a Role Playing game being established here on WotR progressively over the next few months, I am sure many people would like it. But Shhhhhh... it's a secret!

Yes, indeed speak to me about any ideas you would like to hear, I am still ironing out the plans and such for it and I cannon really disclose much. I can though say this much, it is chat room text based and I will speak to Fatty about a section where members can register for characters. We will establish what kinds of characters will be set, how currency will be used, how character weapons and artifacts will come about. Missions (or quests) will be given out by one of four (we're still tinkering with the number) Game Masters who will set up the guidelines for each quest.
Characters will travel realistically along Middle Earth using a map system, each type if character can only travel for so long a distance (hobbits can travel so many miles a day, Drawfs can travel only so many miles a day ect cetra), of course we will make adjustments for those on horses and for special characters such as dragons or great eagles.
I am also trying to keep everyone who is interested that we may not allow anyone to use charcters such as Bilbo Baggins or Legolas, none of the main characters from the books of Toliken will be allowed (though we may make some exceptions for special quests). Just remember that you want to make an original character who you yourself must give life to (after all, by selecting a character who has been written about is a sure sign of laziness).
Also, by using chat based text rather than fourm this allows players to directly speak to one another using a more interactive enviorment to enhance your gaming experience and to chat in character to other WotR members when your character is not on a quest.
So far I can say that there will also be different guilds, such as Elves, Wizards, Man, and the forces of Evil (including Uraks, Urak-Hai, Mordor/Isengard Orcs, Moria/Misty Mountian Goblins, ect cetra). There will be a clear structure of character ranks within each of these guilds (kings to the Men, I am unsure what to make of how the Elves will be set up, Wizards would be quite easy though. As for Evil we will have a single leader with many agents of evil)
When it comes to locations in Middle Earth everywhere will be up for grabs, Dead Marshes, Misty Mountians, even the Mines of Moria. There will also be Bree, Lonely Mountian, Gondor, Isengard, you name it.
In RPing we are going to provide for both players who wish to have a quiet atmosphere where players can gather in taverns and talk and joke and we will also provide for players who are out for adventure.
As for special characters such as Wizards and Rangers and such each player will register and speak to a WotR game master, these game masters will be of the guild you will end up joining (if you wish to be a ranger you will speak to the Guild of Men), these game masters will get a preview of your playing skill and skill at playing the role you wish for. If you do not qualify than two things must occur, the first being you must study your character, and the second being you must speak with two or more game Masters, these game Masters act as a counsel that will decide together if a character is allowed to take a role.
Best advice I can give out now is this, be realistic. If you want to be a Hobbit you will not carry a weapon. If you're a tavern keeper you won't have hordes of riches. If you're an Elf you're going to be absolutely noble and wise. IF you can't accept these basic terms than you should reconsider the role you wish for.
More to come soon! If you have inquires or suggestions please speak to me by dropping me a private message, e-mailing me, or sending me an Instant message.
~ The Mystic ~
PS - I am looking for talented role players to be the heads of such guilds and game masters, if you are interested drop me a line.

The Mystic- The setup you have in mind sounds very marvelous! I think it's a good way to handle things, especially the "screening" process. Sometimes RP's get out of character and very..."un-Tolkien-y." Thank you for putting so much thought into this system. I will be one of many (I'm sure) looking forward to it getting up and running! :hooray: Kudos to you!

Salutes good Oro, and all else here!
Hmm, I suppose this is somewhat amusing: my very first post here going toward an inquirey into RPing, but I enjoy them so much that it just came naturally.
I am somewhat confused at the way we are RPing here. It appears from what I've read so far that we are talking more of an RPG rather than an RP like what we have in a forum I spend most of my time in - and where Oro once visited often. I think it is called around here: The Other Place.
I think the idea of an RPG sounds really cool. However, I also like the way we do it at the Other Place where we are just writing a story, and there are really no rules and not a ton of specifics. We are just writing, and, hopefully, it's good, Tolkienesque writing.
I was wondering if there is any possibilyt whatsoever if we could do more than this somewhat rigid, painstakingly defined RPGing, and have both RPGing and RPing. I would love to do both!

Hmm well I am not sure what you mean by the other place, I think Oro must have ahd some conflicts over there, but I won't speak for him. You are free to talk about other sites, as long as not blatant promotion. :-)
As for the sort of sprawling developing story roleplaying, that is fine. The other type, which Mystic is on about is more for peole used to pen and paper Roleplaying. We will also be hosting games of Never Winter Nights set in ME. :-)
Oh an dwelcome to War of the Ring, good to see you jumping straight in. Have fun and an ideas or questions or critisism just give Illuvatar or I a holler.

By the way, are normal members like me able to start RPs at any time? Or do I have to contact a moderator first?

Well, I know this is a little late, but I believe that anyone may start an RP, as long as it is Tolkien based. I'll ask the admins about it. Okay?
