View Full Version : I'm Sick Of These People

I don't know about everyone else, but at my school there are suddenly tons of people reading LotR just because me and some of my friends are constantly talking about it, and just because the movies are so popular. I know that was part of the point for the movies (to get other people to read the books) but it's starting to get on my nerves. half the people don't even understand it and they try to act like they're are cool by praddling on about something that makes no sense. Here is a classic incident. This is around the time they had LotR at Burger King.
My friend and I are talking about just LotR in general, and possibly THE dumbest and lamest kid in our grade comes up and says, "Hey, whatcyou guys talking about?"
"Lord of the Rings."
"Oh really? Well I have all six cups!"
(sarcastically) "REEEEALLY?"
"No, I only have four."

That was the most annoying one. Can anyone relate to any of this?

what i find annoying is that some people like Legolas just because of how he looks (as a result, being their "favorite character)... i mean in the book version he doesn't have much lines and Tolkien didnt' really develop his character as much as he should have i thought... but all these teenage girls liking Legolas just for his looks can be pretty bothersome and annoying at times....

if they like him for his bow and arrow prowess, then that's cool, but if it's just superficially for his looks, then i think they're liking him for the wrong reasons.. :p

of course i have to admit that he's really cute and he's a cool hero, but in terms of character, i like certain other characters =)

but in terms of competing for amount of merchandise one has.. that is pretty messed up...(in the case of the cup competition you were talking about)

i agree about the legolas thing.

about the reading it cuz its a popular movie, i think its great, i know i never would've read them if not for the movies and now i love them. I'm a much bigger fan of the books than the movies, the only thing i hate is when people think that everything in the movie is 100% right, like ill be talking about bombadill or shelob and everyones "what, thats not in the movie, i think you're confused"

Hmmm, I dunno if this is a book or a movie debate, but I read the books before the films came out - and I am grateful! My perceptions and opinions of the characters are not coloured by the actors I see on screen. In fact, some of them are simply not as I had pictured them! Still, nothing on screen can compare to the quality of the books, the detail with which they were written. My favourite characters have always been the more marginal ones - Glorfindel, Elladan and Elrohir, to name a few - these characters add a depth to the book that is missing on screen - through no fault of PJ or the actors; simply because cinema was never the intended medium.

My friend, however, saw the first film, then read the book and has now moved on to the Silmarillion - maybe it does not matter how you find them; all that matters is that you do find them

And a final thought:
Does seeing the film before reading the book make the book less special? I wonder...

Why is this in the library? I'm moving it to the Pony.

As to me, I find it sad that a couple of my friends watched the movie didnt like it and think the book is worth as well.

I too have been in such incident as that, and it really is bothersome. They either go, "That's not in the movie!" like you said, or, "Huh, what exactly are you talking about?"

I watched the movie first and then I read the books... and I'm an official critic of the movie after that... Hollywood cheapened the book with Arwen *blueh*

Anyways... it was Howard Shore's music that really caught my attention... I drive everyone at school kaput with my obsession...

Books are DEFINITELY better than the movie... but cute people are nice... my friends at school, seeing my obsession, tried to read the book, but they gave up in the first book, claiming that they couldn't understand anything in it.

Well, Tolkien is a linguist after all, and the standard of English in my country hasn't extended to that....yet...

My sister does fancy Legolas, but she originally thought he was a good character when she first read the book, so that may have been what encouraged her to 'investigate' the actor who plays him.

I know, I saw the movie first, but now I've read the books 4 times, and I'm on Shelob's lair, reading it for the 5th. My "friends" are contansly(SP?) making fun of my love for LOTR, one of my better friends, saw the movie with me and seemed really interested.....until he said the movie was better than the book. Another instance: I have a copy of the one ring, and proudly wear it around my neck on a chain, one of my peers started laughing at me, saying "It's lord of the ring boy! come on Frodo! put it on! would you like a cup of tea?", stupid stuff like that, then RIPPED it off my neck! he got a black eye after that.

I have a friend who watched the movie and finds that it's boring and he doesn't understand it. Bah! That's obviously cuz he doesn't appreciate the profoundity of it!

I have friends who like the movie, but don't go any deeper than that. Another one is reading the books, but keeps comparing to the movie, and says she's getting really confused cos it's so different. Well, duh.

I suppose we see these kinds of people because right now, LOTR is the "in" thing to like and gush about. It's very good that the movie generated new interest in the books, but yes, it is quite tiresome to hear those people act as if the movie is right and the books are wrong. I mean, it's crazy, that's what it is.

I totally agree that this is one of the most annoying things anyone can do. It's not really Legolas they are obsessing, I think, but the actor who plays him.

And I'd also like to say, GO SAURON!!! :hooray: :hooray: :hooray:

well....there afre some people that no matter what's in fashion will follow it....luckily i only know a few of these people (otherwise i'd go insane!!)

i read LOTR after i saw FOTR (i'd already read the hobbit) but i don't think it made it any less special for me. ....i have since read the silmarillion and parts of the history of ME and i am a genuine fan of the books unlike some people who claim to love the books when they've read half of it and got bored so stopped (there are a few peopel in my class who have actually done that...)

I read the books before the film came out and I thought they were wonderful. I don't have any of the situations you guys are mentioning because I keep my LotR obssesion confined mostly to this board and the few friends who I know love it as much as I do.

I agree with you all in your dislike of the legolas fangirls who like him for his looks. I get tired of all the drool. verymad

I havent really had one of these situations either. I am open with my love for the books, and proud of it. Why not? The only real time that someone has dissed it to me is when about 10 of us went to see TTT, and a few hadnt read the books. When we left a couple of them said it was a great film up until the Ents... and proceeded to judge the film from then on purely on that. None stop *****ing "And what the hell was with those trees?" etc etc etc... Poor fools!

I actually liked the ents, though it was hard sometimes to understand Treebeard.

Lord of the Nazgul

the only thing that bothered me about the ents was how cheap it looked when merry and pippin were on top of treebeard. with so much money you'd think they could make it look better

Well my boyfriend annoys me when he calls Aragorn Boromir! I hate it when people mix up the characters - it's either they are trying to be cool by talking about it and have no idea whet there talkin about or they are too thick to remember the names! I can understand gettin the names mixed up every now and then but some people at my school continue to do it - My boyfriend only talks about LOTR cause it puts me in a good mood! Mind you you would never catch him reading the LOTR books! lol

I'm just gonna say YRCH!!!! (That's what I say when people is talkin' stupid stuff about the movie or ,even worse, the books)

Sauron

Aye, I heard charaters mixed too, Frodo and the hobbits most though. Once I heard someone say (While Gandalf showed up in Fangorn) "That's the Sauron dude, isn't it!Told you I knew something!" With that stupid remark I missed Chris Lee doing Gandalf!
